Detroit Pistons 1985 Preseason Presser

Post by tbone963 »

Good afternoon, everyone, and thank you for being here. On behalf of the entire organization, we're thrilled to welcome you to the start of a new era for the Detroit Pistons. We've had a strong showing in preseason, but the real work starts now. I believe we have assembled a squad with the talent and character to bring a championship to this great city. When I look at this roster, I see one thing: elite offensive firepower and incredible playmaking. Our expectations this season are simple: compete every single night, make the playoffs, and compete for the title of NBA Champions.

Our team is committed to playing a high-pace, unselfish offense that maximizes our strengths. Our strategy will revolve around constant ball movement and leveraging the skills of our elite playmakers, Micheal Ray Richardson and Alex English, to find open players and scoring opportunities. We will be aggressive, capitalizing on the accuracy of our snipers like Darrell Griffith, while ensuring our powerful interior threats—Terry Cummings and Kevin Willis—get high-percentage looks near the basket. We are built to score in bunches.

While our offense is world-class, we are fully aware that championships are won with defense.
Our primary goal this season is to improve our interior defense and shot blocking. We recognize our need to anchor the paint and better protect the basket. We are implementing new team principles focused on disciplined rotation and rim protection. Furthermore, we will be leveraging the incredible quickness and elite ball-handling defense of our guards, like Alvin Robertson, to turn defense into offense by pressuring the ball and forcing turnovers all over the court. This relentless defensive approach is non-negotiable. We expect every player to commit to stopping the opponent, and we will utilize our deep rotation to maintain energy and intensity for all 48 minutes.
The season hasn’t started yet and the guys already look like they’ve been playing together for years: with and for each other.

To the people of Detroit: Your loyalty is legendary, and we appreciate it. We are building something special. Our team will play a thrilling, unselfish brand of basketball, and we will make you proud. Come out to the Pontiac Silverdome, be loud, and be ready. Let's go, Pistons!

I’ll now take any questions.

Picks Emmington of the #SLOE Gazette,

You've made some great moves over the years and you finally got a playoff series win this past season. Do you feel this team is in championship or bust mode or do you see yourself still steadily building towards the championship run

While I do see us being in contention, I don't see this season as a bust if we don't make the championship. We've improved every season and plan to continue that trajectory. We have a young core that we plan to keep together for many more years. After next year we may have financial decisions to make, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Chet Youbetcha, Dimmadome News: Word on the street is that Reid is available. The fact that he is not in the above picture adds fuel to the fire. Can you give any details on this story?

A lot of emphasis has been placed on steals. How do you see your team in terms of rebounding? Do you think this team will be able to clean the boards to push the pace for open shots as you mentioned with steals?

We've listened to offers on Reid and did our due diligence in talking out trades just as we would for any player. I wouldn't read too much into the picture, Reid is a part of this team as much as anybody else. He has been a professional and strong veteran presence since he came to us last year. We look forward to having him in our locker room again this season.

I think this team will be top 5 in rebounds by the end of the season. Kevin and Terry can hang with the best of them and have only gotten better since entering the league. I don't wanna start any dpoy talks but don't be surprised if Kevin Willis leads the league this year in rebounds.

Unsung is so tough because in our world, everyone is in the choir. I think I'd have to go with Michael Ray Richardson though. He's a veteran in this league, but he can hang with any young buck out there. He's also the facilitator and floor general of this squad, distributing the ball efficiently and effectively. He's our leader on defense and while not the flashiest, can score at will. We have plenty of scorers and defensive guys, but without him, this team would not be the same.
