S84 Town Hall 1

Post by Mike Lowry »

Who is the best team in the league? Why?
How far will that team advance this season?

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers, which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5, 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.

Due: Due by the deadline for sim 2

Based on sim 1 it has to be the Lakers. Not only did they go undefeated, but they also beat several teams that were going to be top end teams: the blazers twice, the Knicks, the Nets, the kings and the warriors. We will see if this holds up all year as if they get one injury, mainly Magic (by god is he playing well) but also any other starter, that will hurt their chance at a title.

They showed they have a chance at going to the finals for sure, but it’s only sim one so we can’t get too excited yet - looking at you Greeps

In order not to talk about the Lakers since it has already been mentioned, I'm going to say the Mavericks. Rookie Sam Bowie sliding right into a starter role has been incredible. Walter Davis and Bill Lambeer have the scoring responsibility on lock. And Doc Rivers is running the floor like a general. The part of a team that isn't talked about is the coaching. The Mavs decided to start a big at shooting guard. With proper defensive scheming, this could make a very difficult matchup for other teams. With Mike McGee and Jay Vincent as backups, this team could also maintain with an injury to a single starter without dropping too much.

They have the issue of being in the same conference as the undeafeted powerhouse, but this team could win the division and make it to the conference finals. From there, it is all dependent on matchups and injuries. This team is definitely a title contender this season.

Sorry, for me it's the Bucks. They're the "Defending Champions" ... until someone else takes the title from them, I have to give them their respect. I think they'll have some stiffer competition in the East this season, but I still see them making the Finals and they have a decent shot at winning the whole thing again.

I'm going with the BluntForceTrauma.
It's a very deep team.
Their depth is quality.
And they had multiple fringe players come out of camp crossing thresholds.
I don't know that they'll have an opportunity like this window for a long time.
The stars might be too raw to carry them over the edge, but collectively I think they stand up.
Which is also why I'm not picking the Lakers.
A roster that thin is bound to run Murphy's law and encounter misfortune just when they can't afford to do so.
As for the Blazers, I think they make the finals again, but there are a few teams in the East that can catch them by surprise and get hot at the right time.
Parity is everything this season.
The ship is guaranteed to no one!

Give me the Chicago Bulls. Their squad reminds me of my current build in Dallas, but I think logpmess has an even higher ceiling given their depth and flexibility, particularly in the backcourt. Their frontcourt features defensive specialists that can more than handle the gauntlet of talented bigs in the East with their elite rebounding and shot blocking abilities. Meanwhile, their recent acquisitions of Calvin Natt and Purvis Short provide a fantastic 1-2 scoring punch, all while retaining Mo Cheeks to handle the role of facilitator. This is looking like a terrible season to hold their draft pick, but I really like their chances to advance out of the conference, and they are definitely on my shortlist of title contenders this season.

I'm not afraid to reiterate the Lakers, but I do think the sim 1 results may have them a bit overhyped.

Of their 11 wins, 2 were against teams with better than .500 records (discluding teams like mine with 1 game over .500). They went on a killing spree of the eastern conference at home, and had two solid road wins against the Kings and Blazers. I think it's really easy to overlook the Clippers right now, who went 7-3, when you see the Lakers went 11-0, but I think the Clippers pose a really tough competition to the Lakers for as long as Raby maintains interest.

The Lakers are 9-0 at home, 2-0 on the road. The Clippers are 3-0 at home, and 4-3 on the road (two of the losses were one score games). I'm really looking forward to this matchup in Sim 2. Go Clips Go!!!
Somehow I manage.

The best team in the league is the Lakers. They have surrounded their team with players that complement Magic. Magic just continues to get better. The only thing that can stop them is the blunt force trauma of the Blazers which they avoided Sim 1 with the injuries turned off. I think they will be representing the West in the finals this season and will be a lopsided trade away from solidifying their championship title run.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet, but the FREAKIN SPURS?!?! C'mon. This team probably has a POOR Cohesion right now considering 3/5 of their starting 5 is new blood... but once they figure this out, it's GAME OVER. TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, THE PARTY'S OVER. With Gminski, they have the defensive anchor they lacked last season. With Kiki, they have ANOTHER elite scoring machine. And oh yeah, MICHAEL FREAKIN JORDAN is a stud on both sides of the ball. This team will only get better as the season progresses.

Yeah, I don't think anyone wants to talk about the Spurs anymore, but depending on how you read the questions, the Spurs are the best TEAM. Their young talent is literally legendary and they just used their space to go get one of the best big men in the league right now to anchor them. There is definitely easy arguments to made that there are teams more ready to win now, but even that isnt far off. This young Spurs team is good and deep enough to make a playoff run and make noise even this year.

This GM should probably consider getting some even more future value in return for some of these great young guys not getting the minutes they deserve on his bench, but who am I to say..

I'm most worried about the Spurs. They have top tier talent 1-6. The addition of Kiki Vandeweghe really put them over the top. If the cohesion isn't there than they will just ship out one of the 6 and get the piece they are missing. The only chance the rest of the league has agaist them is they might be a bit to young to win the whole thing.

They don't have a strong power forward but I bet they move one of their guys to pick one up. Even with a 6 -3 record they have one of the highest differentials in the league. Even if they don't win it this year, for the foreseeable future this superteam is going to be a problem!

Lakers. Magic Johnson. Do I have to say more? I mean even though Magic STILL isn't being used at PG, he's is part of a much more whole team now and should wreck the league finally. Good luck to all of us.

I think with the right gameplan, they should win it all. That's clearly the bar. It will be a failure of a season if they don't. Magic is the best player in the league by far. MJ can't hold his jock.
