Town Hall Sim 3 1980

Post by Mike Lowry »

What surprised you about your teams performance in the first sim?
Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
What can you say about your expectations of league play in 1980 versus how it's playing out?

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers, which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5, 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.

Due: Due by the deadline for sim 3 - Didn't realize back to back sims

I'm unpleasantly surprised at our team's defense... I know I didn't draft great defenders, but I didn't think I drafted awful ones! We're the worst defensive team in the league! Also not happy to have already dropped several games to the Clippers, that won't help for tiebreakers.
Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
I "let things ride" last week to see if the bad defense was an anomaly... don't get too high or too low too quickly. Clearly it isn't and I need to make some changes.

What doesn't surprise me: Nobody's shooting three pointers. What does surprise me: Everyone's shooting free throws. Can you imagine the complaining in the 2024 NBA if free throws were awarded as much as they are in 1980?

Even though preseason set me up for this, I was surprised how much we sucked. I figured the power of Moses would generate more wins, but I actually think we had some tough games out the gate. My division is full of killers, and I'll be playing a lot, and we're all going to beat the hell out of each other.

Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
Definitely needed to make changes, and they paid off (I presume this Town Hall is post-sim 2 and pre-sim 3). I think the biggest mistake was playing Eddie Johnson at SG instead of PG. Even though Phil Ford has better pure point guard ratings, Eddie is the better player overall, and he needed to take point for that reason alone. After going 2-5 to start, we went 4-3 for sim 2, which is a huge turnaround. We had a couple one point losses, too, so that was encouraging considering the competition.

What can you say about your expectations of league play in 1980 versus how it's playing out?
It's all about the free throws, baby. My 2050 and 2060 PBSL teams would get SQUASHED in 1980 because none of my players could shoot free throws. Seeing Portland average 53 free throws per game is absurd. I did not expect this, but I'm also admittedly not familiar with 1980 basketball. All I know is everything feels verrry different compared to what I am used to feeling.
Somehow I manage.

- Theus had poor stats, but the team actually played well. I think that will even out in both directions -- Theus is going to be a stud, but the team will struggle.

Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
- I usually stick with the same plan for the first few sims to see more data. Obviously sim 2 showed that it's not a game-winning gameplan, so I will have to do some more investigation.

What can you say about your expectations of league play in 1980 versus how it's playing out?
- Almost exactly like I thought. Not many threes, inside scoring is prevalent. I will say that a lot of players look a lot different than I thought. Maybe it's because of the general lack of ability across the board, but green currents look like blue superstars.

Im surprised we've attempted four 3-pointers as a team. Those might as well be turnovers to my eyes

We've gotten off to a hot start so im wary of changing too much but I'd like to continue to tinker and find ways to keep our foul count down but thats easier said than done in the current climate of the league

I guess im surprised that overall the assist numbers are a lot lower than in the future, I just figure some teams would have more of a motion offense and utilize passing but its a lot of iso inside scorers it seems. Im interested to find out at which point this will start to shift and if some team can build a team and accelerate that change

I'm surprised with how well we have been playing. We are a relatively young team, especially on the front court side of things. But our big men came to play. But I would like to think that the BIGGEST surprise for our team is how good Bill Hanzlik has been for this squad. He's the 3rd highest scorer, but does so much more with his size & athleticism. He's a contributor on both sides of the court, and just is that lunchpail glue guy every team looks for. Not bad for a ROOKIE!

Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
Great question... short answer, I'm not really sure. We are turning the ball over a lot. So maybe we need to decrease our motion & pace to help keep things in check. Also we may give some of our other players opportunities to shine as key players just to see if there's any changes in output.

What can you say about your expectations of league play in 1980 versus how it's playing out?
I knew big men were going to be important but this is nuts how dominant some of these bigs are! I've never even heard of Calvin Natt before I saw the Spurs sim results lol

I wasn't really surprised by much, the team performed about how I expected. Pat Cummings has been more effective than I thought he'd be, so that was an unexpected bonus.
Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
Probably, though I personally feel like my time would be better spent looking to tweak my roster as opposed to my gameplan. It already feels like I'm getting the most out of a lot of my players.

I'll be honest, even with knowing how small of a role 3-pointers played during this time period, I'm still shocked to see just one player listed on the 3pt% leaderboard. I haven't dove into it yet, but I don't think there's a single player in the league who's currently averaging more than 2.1 3pt attempts per game. That's insane to think about.

What surprised me the most was my defense giving up a lot more points. Only have 2 over 100 in the preseason and then every game was over 100 in the first sim, so got stuff to figure out there.

I think its funny going back because every DC I did before for years was always a 10 in 3ps and now it just a 1. I probably should have focused more on better bigs because everything is getting run more on the inside as well.

In the spirit of your team, are you only trading for white dudes though? lmao

- The biggest surprise was that Mo Cheeks is getting double double numbers. I was thinking with an inside approach and two bigs that can score, Cheeks would not be getting looks. Where he is and is converting them, even though his INS is not great.

Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
-Defensively no, I am set. I need to improve the offense though. It is close to the cellars and I aint happy about that.

What can you say about your expectations of league play in 1980 versus how it's playing out?
- My idea of having two good bigs has been paying off with my defense as stated. I knew that it would be needed in this time period. I also will repeat the bit about Mo Cheeks playing so well. I did not expect him to play so well, as I know this game is built on bigs right now. However, he is playing great and I feel really happy taking on a top end PG right now.

What surprised you about your teams performance in the first sim?
I guess I was hoping for better defensive play but that just didn't happen. I thought I had built a defensive minded team but clearly I need to keep tweaking the gameplan in order to figure out how to stop teams from scoring so much

Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
Yes, I need to figure out defense. I'd like to get close to 100 pts/game instead of being over 110. My team can put up points but constantly having to try and play catch up isn't going to be a winning formula

What can you say about your expectations of league play in 1980 versus how it's playing out?
It's kinda going exactly how I thought it would. Not as many high scoring games, a lot more inside focus, and defenses are playing a bit better in 1980. I'm hoping to get some consistency out of my team soon so we can really compete with the top teams

My team actually rebounds fairly for a guard oriented team.
I was really worried because Brad Davis is rated to grab nothing and I'm playing him pretty big minutes.

That also jumped at me though, my whole starting lineup averaged less playing time than I had assigned.
Probably have to play with the pace.

Do you need to make adjustments to your game plan?
I certainly do.
I got a lot of questions in the press about whether an approach like this is possible in 1980.
I don't think it is expressly out of the question.
My front-court is not deep, but they are serviceable.
I just have to adjust the game-plan to accentuate the strengths they have.

What can you say about your expectations of league play in 1980 versus how it's playing out?
It seems simpler than I imagined.
Inside scoring is carrying the day so far.
It certainly is a big man's game at the moment.
I wasn't sure if that would be true.
