Days of Future Past- Denver Nuggets Preseason Presser

Post by Jedihero »

The year is 2061, I find myself huddled into an old fortress surrounded by my peers, Magneto, Wolverine, Professor X, and other well-known X-Men. We are being attacked by man made robots called Sentinels to hunt down and kill all mutants. We have devised a plan to save the future of Mutant-kind and it all revolves around me, Jedihero, and my ability to GM a basketball team.

The Mission: To go back in time to 1980 be the GM of the Denver Nuggets and create a dynasty to dominant that the human race won’t be bothered by the arrival of mutants due to the entertainment that I will be providing with my team.

The Goal: To win 10 NPBSL Championships before we return to the year 2060, or else it will all have been in vain, and Mutants will be eradicated.

Kitty Pryde is ready to use her ability to send me back, I ready myself, take a deep breath and we proceed with the plan.

I wake up, startled from a knock on my office door. My foxy assistant enters the room and tell me it is almost time for my preseason press conference. I say to myself “Why did I just call her foxy….”, I check the calendar. My God, we’ve done it. I have returned to 1980 and the current GM of the Denver Nuggets. I look myself over, and am astonished to see I have also become young again. Too young, I think, I look about 18 and wonder how I was able to get this job in the first place.

I tell the DJ to play that funky music white boy, he catches my drift and begins to play the new hit song “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc. Not exactly what I wanted by I roll with it, literally because I am wearing my brand new roller skates and need to break them in. I do a sick 360 spin jump onto the stage and stop right at the podium.

“Good morning, everybody! Said Good Morning Everyone! And Welcome to the FIRST of many press conferences for the Denver Nuggets. My name is Jedihero and it is so rad to be here and speak with all of you.”

“First order of business, I want to thank the BRAND SPANKING NEW COMMISSIONER of this league. He may not be doing it correctly, but he’s doing his best and that’s all we care about! Another big shoutout to his new little minions they did a fantastic job getting the league setup and running the draft as efficiently as possible.”

“Second item: The Draft. We were selected to pick at the 19 spot, and to be honest with you I was happy with it. After my initial calculations I wanted to either be at the very front or the very back of the draft, so 19 only 4 off the end was a solid spot to be. I am a numbers guy through and through and let me tell you we got VALUE at almost every pick in this the draft. My #1 pick, Alex English was my #5 overall rated player, and he dropped to be at 19. That by itself was a huge win. You can see by how the preseason went for us to know how correct I was. Alex is averaging 40.0 PPG. 40!! That is an insane number and to go along with our 5-1 record to be looking like the early favorite in the West division.”

“Now I can sit here all day and tell you how hyped up I am for this team but there are a few concerns and depending how this first season plays out maybe we can address one or two of them. Firstly, we do not have the strongest front court. I know the 3PT is relatively new and players aren’t accustomed to it yet, so everything needs to be played through the inside, so maybe we could have done better there, but I am telling you the VALUE we got in this draft at the pick we were is insane and I wouldn’t trade this drafted team for anything or anyone. (Except Larry Bird, that would be dope.). I am also concerned about depth. Starting a new league is weird in the fact that every team should be about equal, meaning all the good players already have homes and we don’t have the depth a normal team should when they are starting a new season. So hopefully some of the lower teams try to find homes for bigger names when we get closer to the deadline because let me tell you, the Nuggets are BUYING!”

“I think you’ve heard enough from me, I’m going to answer a few questions and skate on outta here to the roller rink and get my groove on….”

Steve Duin, the Oregonian: You mention the Nuggets are BUYING - but as you mentioned, every team should be about equal following the creation draft? What will be your preferred currency to buy. And what specific skills or player types are on your shopping list to put around Alex?

In theory, after a league wide draft everyone should have a pretty even chance to win, but it doesn't quite work out that way in real life. Statistically speaking the #1 overall pick should have the best chance to win, followed by #2,#3 all the way to #24 who should have the least chance to win. This is also assuming everyone picked the best available player at their spot, which according to my calculations, did not happen. Now, for a variety of reasons someone will win the league, and someone will be the #1 pick in the 1981 draft, so when that split inevitably starts to occur, I believe some GMs will try to gain some capital. Whether its picks, points, or young talent, I can offer something in all those departments.

Now, what will I look for? Probably a solid big to help out. I am already great at the outside with Alex and John Lucas, and nothing against my current bigs, who I think will handle the job well, but getting a great player in the middle will elevate this team above the statistical outcome it should be destined for.

Chet Youbetcha, Dimmadome News: Are there any grudges to be had with the commissioner after you messed up in not declaring the want for a new team, which you wanted the Supersonics, only to see the your desired team go to the same person you had a problem with but also get such a high pick in the draft?

Absolutely there are grudges. How was I supposed to know what was happening, I don't read good. Also, Supersonic and Bullets were not even mentioned until the day it was happening. Seems like Collusion to me.

In regards to the pick, that doesn't bother me at all, I just got to see him make mistakes with a top pick and doom the Sonics to a life of mediocrity. I could've made them great though...

Comm Mish, of the SLOE Gazette: I must say, it's not a good sign to be talking about other people's "mistakes" before the season has even started. We all don't know how this season will go. Especially if certain people have some control over your team (wink wink). That being said, what is your overall vision for this team? I think I heard somewhere you had a dream where you brought a team to back to back Finals series, even though you got swept in both. Where do you see yourself building first to bring this team on a deep playoff run? And are there any players you are already looking at to try and add to your team

Everyone made a mistake in the draft, except for me. I am infallible. Comm Miss me with that threat HA!

Vision? The only vision there is, winning the whole gosh darn thing. Not making the playoffs would be considered an utter failure, barring any major injury of course. In my dream I had the 2nd best team in the league for 2 years, the other team was just this absolutely ridiculous squad of some of the best athletes you've ever seen, so there was no chance anybody could have beaten them. So I was perfectly happy with my 2 2nd places. In the dream of course.

I am already looking at a few players, but no shot am I giving that information out willy nilly in here. You'll just have to wait and see what happens in the season.

Bruce Wayne, The Gotham Gazetteer

Really impressive numbers out of the gate Jedihero. Our GM over in big city has already mentioned to us that he thinks you could be a force to be reckon with this year. Take it easy on that assistant of yours though. its 1980 now, but I have a feeling it gets a little hairy for you guys in the big offices in the future.

While you do seem to be the early front runner in the West, what team do you see as your biggest obstacle this year?

Ted Tennyham, Tedeshi Times: Having such a great preseason, do you see Alex English as your franchise player, maybe even untouchable? Or is he gonna be used to entice other teams to trade some of their stars?

I see we have a young gun named Larry Bird over in Houston who actually knows how to shoot the 3 ball, its insane. So we will have our hands full with them and it should be a good race for the division. Over in the Pacific, the Lakers look like they can cause a bit of havoc and that Portland teams GM was really going on about Blunt Force Trauma, I don't know what that means but I hope I don't find out.

Alex is our guy. If I had the 4th pick in the draft, I would have taken Alex there. Unbelievable talent that man has. If anything I am going to work to bring in other super star talent around him.

Frankie "Four Fingers" Fuxsalot, ESPN: Your best players are already passed their prime. What the hell is wrong with you? You couldn't have drafted younger players? Jesus christ. Anyways, what the world wants to know is: Can Alex English speak any other languages outside his native one?
