S72 Town Hall #1 If it works - fix it?

Post by Mike Lowry »

What worked out for you in the offseason? What went terribly wrong? Who did you waste your UFA bids on? Why didn't you bid Kuminga? The people want to know.

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers, which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.

I have to say that as far as offseasons go, this has been a strong one for me. A lot worked out. I was able to open up enough cap space to take some shots at some big targets in Free Agency, knowing I might have to bid a little stronger since I was coming off a reset year. My strategy--in case it helps anyone whose still figuring out UFA was to offer my biggest targets contracts that were over their desired if I thought they were worth more than asking price, but having several backup options that were closer to--or lower than--asking price so if I struck out on all my big targets, there would still be offers out there and the lower offers wouldn't sign before my bigger targets. Doing that landed me Kamari Brown and Kel'el Ware. Alongside Booger Smith, I'd be able to go either direction and either have pieces to flip or use assets I built up and some birds rights resigns (I can't begin to stress how important it is to do little things like keep cheap bird rights guys around so you can use them as salary pieces in offseason S&Ts). The biggest coup, however, was obviously the Sion trade. I think it'll end up being a winning trade for both sides.

Nothing went terribly wrong, but TC never goes terribly right for me. I just can't crack the formula. I didn't have a bad TC, it's just been a while since a longterm prospect has popped for me as I've had a lot of people saved by insurance, but it's been a while since anyone I've insured ended up with a + by their name.

I didn't have any cap space in round 2 to bid on Kuminga. I'm shocked that nobody outbid a min, but not that shocked. Kuminga wanted a high asking price and with a lot of the money in the hands of new GMs, probably not a ton of them know that if someone wants a lot more money than their worth, the best move is just offering them the highest one year contract, not a long term contract. Maybe some people bid on Kuminga for 4 years at a price much lower than his egregious asking price when they could have probably gotten him on a 1 year deal. Maybe not. Only Nate would know that for sure.

I feel like this post was written just for me.

First, I'm kinda mid on my offseason. I like Raphael Cottrill, but I was hoping he'd go blue in TC. I still think he will eventually.

The reason I bid on him with MLE money was that UFA has sucked for me every year, and there were about 3 or 4 blue-win players that I wanted and thought might sign with me. Since there were only a few, I figured I’d get stuck with some g/g in UFA and not any b/b. So I bid on Cottrill because he was my favorite of the g/g.

There are two problems with picking him up. The first and most annoying is that I can't trade him this season. I didn't really think about that until he was on the team. I like him as a scoring bench player, but now he has to be that scoring bench player if I'm going to be successful.

The other annoying part of picking up Cottrill is that it took my MLE money, so I could bid on Kaminga.

In the long run, I still like the pickup; it's just not what I need this season. The problem was there weren't very many players in this UFA that I could get that would have helped me more. There was no way to anticipate that no one was going to bid on Kaminga and that he was going to sign a vet min contract.

TC worked out for me pretty good, I suppose. No more unnatural bumps or anything, but when your worst hit is low double digits to a minor rookie contract player who wouldn't likely be with you more than 2 seasons anyways, it was a good TC time for you. Nothing went TERRIBLY wrong either, really, though I can't say I'm really enthused by the off-season either. Before dealing McClung, I did take a shot at Sion but there was no traction there. Then in dealing McClung, the return wasn't exciting in the slightest, but that's just the nature of the broken trade market we've got going on. I've tried moving Blaze too to save some money and hopefully help a GM looking to win some more games, but not much movement there yet either. Just boring stagnation right now. In UFA, I mostly sent out mins, so there is no such thing as a wasted bid there. And I didn't throw an MLE at Kuminga because I don't need a big nor the salary added to my possible tax situation if I can't reset this season.

I think I'm sitting pretty, excited as hell.
My tax is reset, while that other team's in jail.
It's crazy to think no one could bet more than the min.
Look back to that moment if the pistons should win.
A 4 peat ship, that would be insane.
At this point I gotta keep them cats on my brain.
Because if I don't, I'll start selling off pieces,
We gotta take the crown, from the king of mr trade fleeces.
When I look at this off-season, I brought some heavy hitters to the squad.
Mac McClung, Antonio Gates, they both down to ride.
Nothing really went wrong, I am truly impressed.
Now all that's left to do is win games, and be blessed.
This is your captain speaking

Overall, I think I had a great offseason. I landed the #1 pick in the draft and got a Day 1 starter with Dalton Knecht which turbo charges my team's contention window. Free agency also went well because I supermaxed Tennessee Rainwater and landed Mark Shinn during UFA. I think my team got a lot stronger on paper which is all you can ask for during the offseason.

I did not bid on Kuminga because I assumed the other GMs would offer him more than a vet min so why waste my time. Big mistake. The Pistons had a glaring hole at C and filled it in a heartbeat. Shame on all of us for allowing it to happen. Let's all hope they get hit by a meteor. It is our only hope.

I at least put a bid on Kuminga. It was a vet min, sure, but at least he decided to 'play for the better team' and not the only team that made an offer.

I covered this already, but I wasted my MLE by...not having it. I cut my 2nd rounders too early I guess. Shame on me. So I took some swings on guys like Justin Amos and Colton Johnson, and I actually got Colton on a min anyway, so yay me. That was a great offseason moment, actually.

Getting Kevin Cross back was a must, but he's such an asshat for wanting more $$$ than any other player in the league. Like, nothing you have done so far in your career has warranted wanting more than EVERYONE else, so screw you for that. The supermax to get approximately 18ppg is yours, you nut.

I think my greatest offseason moment was roasting LTS for signing Cottrill. Everything else was pretty meh to bad. And don't get me started on Naji Marshall...
Somehow I manage.

For me, it was a pretty uneventful offseason. I wasn't able to make a splash in FA because of my cap, mainly because I'm hoping to clear space for when I have to pay my young guys. I was pleased with TC. Homer finally hit G/B. I'm hoping I can train his defense up a bit and he can really start turning to being an elite PG. I was a little upset that Buggs and Maurin didn't take a step forward but they are both still young so there's plenty of time for development, just was hoping for some kind of jump forward. Instead, Buggs actually dropped down in potential so he's got me worried about his future on the team.

I was able to trade Kofi Blaq away which helped free up future cap space while also getting a solid SF to help this season. Hopefully that trade works out in my favor since I didn't really see kofi being the stud PG that he looked like on paper. But only time will tell.

Overall, I'd probably give my offseason a B-

I'd say a mixed bag of good and bad for the Raptors. I did not retain Kamari Brown which sucks but got to keep everyone else from last year's team so we are still competitive this season. I also really liked our draft pick John Jackman who improved during training camp which is encouraging. Overall, I thought this offseason was not a complete disaster so I am content.

I did not submit a bid for Kuminga because I liked our frontcourt as is so I did not view adding him as a necessity. It is always pretty funny to see talented players like Kuminga turn down money to chase a ring. I like the chaos it has created too in the league because the Pistons are doing a great job playing the league villain so this just adds fuel to the fire.

My offseason went well for me. Finally got a Bobcats/Spurs Widener deal done. It sucks that TC didn't go well for him but hopefully he bounces back next TC. The only thing that went wrong was having a non spurs-like TC but it's all good. Master P had a really good camp as expected. I kinda wasted my UFA bid on David Brown but I just wanted to sign a guy with the space I had available. Overall I think my offseason went good as far as my planned tank this season. Hopefully I won't sneak into the 8th seed this season.

Getting SVG was a great bit of business. I think the Nuggets are still salty that I had their pick this year, after securing it for Griner during their quest for a championship a few seasons back, and that is what was crucial to me getting Stan. He is going to fit in great at the three, or four, and really add a new dimension to this team.
Mike Lowry wrote: Fri Oct 04, 2024 5:28 pmWhat went terribly wrong?
After getting Stan, it is kinda an all or nothing season of sorts for me. I will have three of my best four players on the last year of their deal, or able to opt out after this season. So if I like what I am seeing I may have to pay a pretty penny to bring the band back together.
Mike Lowry wrote: Fri Oct 04, 2024 5:28 pmWho did you waste your UFA bids on?

I mean insert any B/B player with MLE money. I had a very strong feeling that once I sent a full MLE to Parker, I was going to get her. I am glad I did because she is a versatile player, and I knew I did not have much signing power given my teams recent track record of playing like shit.
Mike Lowry wrote: Fri Oct 04, 2024 5:28 pmWhy didn't you bid Kuminga? The people want to know.
By rd two I only had vet mins, and I was in no position for a player to come to me because I would just get the "I wanted to play for a winner" message in the portal.

I enjoyed this offseason compared to other ones. Felt a little more strategic in nature. Had to research the rookies I had the possibility to draft, and then had a good bit on money to spend in UFA and instead of blowing it all on 1 big signing decided to spread it out a bit to get more mid salary guys. Now just have to become a good coach and use my guys effectively throughout the season.

Being patient. Trusting the process. After few seasons of training SG Vassell and PG Loera, both had great TC. Vassell became a purple player and Loera is now a blue player. I expect a great season for both players. UFA did not go well. I needed another star at the Center positon. I made an offer to Kuminga, but his greedy ass signed with another player. He could have been a star with Cleveland. Unfortunately, I didn't find my star Center.

Feel Like this could have been my whole presser, and I'm only talking about TC.
I didn't post that I had edited my original tc post as was requested by the commish, so I don't really know if my team got a tc input, but if we did, we failed miserably!
Everybody took a dive with the execption of my guy Amidah Brimah, who is solid every year.
Got Jordan Poole and Gil Seawright with my MLE and they subsequently jumped in a river along with Jaylen Forbes and Bud Rivera.
So I wasted time and fake money building a bench that was supposed to seperate me from teams that spent a hundred million less.
Now I'll be paying to get rid of them.
So there went my hopes of Conference Finals.
I certainly was relying on the GM's who were still sitting on MLE to bid above MIN, that shit hurt the whole league with the execption of Doug.
