S70 Town Hall #5: "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts!"

Post by MexicanMamba »

Alright, it's officially a weird ass season in sim league. Nutty, one might say. So, give us your top 3 craziest things you're seeing through 4 sims. Can be player performances, in single games or on the season, team performances, records, win streaks, GM decisions, or anything else you can think of.

Get Nuts!

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.

Due: Sim 5 deadline.

1. The wildest thing is that all 26 teams have GMs and all of them appear to be active...maybe some still live in their own silos, but they still do stuff in the silos. The new GMs want to get involved, and that's great for the health of the league.

2. I'm not going to talk about the Pacers because that's way too obvious. Instead I'll talk about the Mavs. I know this season was a step back and reset season, but with Angel Reese, p/p Dominitrix, and (pre-trade) Scoot and Kuminga, the Mavs should have at least been a winning team in a conference as weak as the Omega conference. Granted, they didn't have a true PG, but Scoot seemed like the kind of player who could do a more than passable job there.

3. None of the best PGs on the block are moving. Daniel Johnson and Jose Alvarado have been on the block, and I know Carlos drives a hard bargain, but you'd think people would be going after these guys a little harder. Instead, we see player movement on PGs like Kenneth Douglas and Markus Ridenhouer. Funkhouser did move, but that's because Dr. Kavarga sold low on him. Bricker moved, but cost a purple pot rookie contract. Maybe that set the expectations too high on guys like DJ, Alvarado, and Funk v2.0, who Roberto was at least thinking about flipping for a minute or two.

1. The Jazz-Hawks game featured the entire Hawks starting lineup scoring single-digits. The game was a blowout so I get why some of their guys got pulled early but this is such a bizarre box score still considering three of them played over 30 minutes.
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/boxes/box68-2.htm

2. The Glen Sabo division is all above .500 heading into January. I've never seen that before and hope they find a way to keep it up. This is the toughest division in the league so kudos to all of them.

3. Over half the league is in the luxury tax right now and while I expect the Lakers and Celtics to fall under the line by the trade deadline it is interesting to see how many teams decided to make a push this season. I really like the competitive nature of the league and hope this continues moving forward.

and winning this many games, makes absolutely no sense. It's probably a false sense of greatness similarly to the Steelers the year they won 11 straight. Or when the eagles just last year went 10-1 to start. Either way, the start is great but weird af and yes I'm hating because they're in my stupid division.

The end of the nuggets spurs game on Dec 16th was a weird one. At the end of OT, the nuggets hit a 3 to bring it to within 1 with seconds left. Somehow the final play was the suns shooting a shot resulting in it being no good but I'm confused why a foul didn't happen. And if they couldn't catch us to foul, then fine. But why the hell did we shoot a shot at the buzzer? Sim league never ceases to confuse TF out of me.

Lastly, I'm always a sucker for this, even in the real NBA. It's always fun to me to see how off paced teams are at games played. But holy, I don't think I've ever seen it this bad in real life.
The wiz have played 24 total games. The rockets have played 31 and already 20 road games. 3 other teams have also played 31 games but 20 road games is the story along with only 24 total games from the wizards. That is absolutely wild to me. To be 7 games a part 2 months into the season.

I'ma start with Kel'el Ware being traded 7 times.
I would be checking the board every day and seeing him in all kinds of finalized trades.
I was about to write myself in as well, see if I could squeeze some points or something.

Top 5 scorers in the league under 30 years old.
Scoring cap for 30 year olds 25 pts/gm
That's Crazy!

The playoff race is real.
Think this is the first time since I been here that all the teams have GM's.
Only 6 teams are in full tank mode, and 6 on the fringe for the 7 spot in each conference.
That will change with some of the moves, but getting to this point was interesting.
What cha gonna do

I think the start that the Celtics have had is surprising. Yes, Gates took a tumble in TC, but it never looked like a bottom tier roster to me. Yet, after 4 sims they sit with the 3rd worst record in the league and Gates has (finally) been traded. It's been a rough go of it in Boston, but embracing the tank is obviously the best option now, I just didn't expect it to have to be a tank season.

Ive attached the screenshot of a particularly wild game. Look, I know the Bulls are a championship favorite, I had just deal away Hub, I was on the road, and I built a really strangely fitting roster as-is, but DAMN. This game was over halfway through the opening tip-off. My high scorer hit 13 and as a team we shot 32%. That's a wild beat down.

I also want to show some respect to the rise of Dan Spooner. He first really caught my eye when he dominated a recent All-Star game before he was really well known. After a slow start to his career, he's not in the middle of back-to-back 20-9 seasons on great efficiency. With all due respect to the still great Herb Jones, it may be Spooner now leading the charge for the Pacers and this ridiculous start they're having. Tip of the cap to Spoon and Pauly. Image

#1 The Kings-Nuggets OT thriller a few sims ago featured two triple-doubles by the Kings. Not surprisingly, one was recorded by Jordan Poole who probably has at least 25 to his name at this point in his career (anyone with TV can fact-check me on this one) but the other one was achieved by KC Ndefo who finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists (and a not too shabby 8 blocks). Ndefo recorded a 2nd triple-double a week later against his former team, the Memphis Grizzlies with 13 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists to go along with 9(!) blocks. For anyone who manages to reach SuperDog, KC Ndefo is a prime trade target.

#2 The Charlotte Bobcats have a record $192M in dead salary this season.

#3 If the season ended today, the Brooklyn Nets would be the first team in league history to be $100M+ over the cap and miss the playoffs.

I am going to do a different spin on this because I can finally bring some things to light about Antonio Gates that I did not want to say until he was no longer on my roster. I had seen these while having on the team and then always got a chuckle out of it. To be falling within the lines of this article, this is all things that have taken place up to this point.

Thing #1: Antonio Gates college career is remarkably short. Like, five mins short. How can that be for such a premiere talent??? The stat line is quite entertaining as well. His total stat line is one assist and one personal foul in five mins of work. Maybe I should have made this guy a PG and the enforcer for the team.

The above is Gates' career highlights up to this sim... There are two things that stick out to me as funny.

Thing #2: This is the more obvious one because of the red boxes, but Gates managed to be involved in three rookie games. Seems a little odd given that they are only allowed to play in their rookie and sophomore campaigns... The only thing I can think of, is he played in the pre-season the first season it happened, while being inactive during the regular season. Thus keeping his status of zero season of experience.

Thing #3: Antonio Gates was never an All-star. He has been a consistently really good to great player, but he has always had other players in front of him that just jump ahead of him in the voting. IDK, maybe it's the trade off for all those rookie games?

1. I’m surprised the Celtics aren’t worse than they actually have been. That team is complete ass even with Gates. He should’ve added a true winner like Trent Dawes in the offseason when he had the chance. Instead he’s going to have to match a player option 4yr max on his rookie contract blue boy. IM CUMMIN FOR YA

2. Caitlyn Clark getting traded. You saw my comments in the thread that started the forest fire of trash talk and excitement (#contentcreator) but imma bring it up again. After YEARS of trying to move her, the Mavs finally found a taker! Someone with extensive 2 days of experience in the league too!

3. The Jazz might have a pick in the double digits. I don’t want to go as far as saying they’ll be a playoff team but the fact that they have a winning record at the moment is shocking for me. When’s the last time that happened lol

#1: The Grizz. K100 is on fire. There is no question he's trying to copy the Cavs strategy. K100 is trying to train Rainwater to be the fastest SF in the league, which was my strategy with Jonathan Isaac.

#2: AB. He beat me last year in the playoffs. What happened. Celtics sucks. AB finally realized Gates is not Jonathan Isaac. I tried to help AB with solid trade offers for both sides. AB declined my generosity. And for that, Cavs are going to the playoffs and the Celtics are not.

#3: I'm trying not to repeat the same teams. I'll go with the Nuggets. Nuggets are not a bad team at all. However, you have the highest team salary with a lot of talent on the roster. I expected a better record. At the current moment there are better teams than the Nuggets with much less talent.

1. Parity in the everyone except the Hawks, at the moment has a shot at a playoff spot. I do no think it's been like this in a while. We know it will level off after a a few sims.

2. The Sabo division. I didn't think I would see a division, that division would have a winning record and the team at the top not named the Pistons. That division is really competitive and would be a shame if every team ends the season there above .500 and be a lotto team.

3. People believing the theory that a player 30 years old can't help a team win a tittle. All players at 30 aren't created equally. Yeah there are some that fall completely off the cliff and there are some who can lead the right team to a deep run.

1. After 4 sims I'm the number 2 team in my conference. This actually reminds me of my championship build in that, its first season together, I never expected it to win it all. I expected to win two seasons later. I don't think this team will win it all by any means, but they have outperformed my expectations, and Clax and Bre have hella room to grow (you too K Cross, stop bad TC'ing)

2. LTS traded Kuminga / Scoot / 10 points / Caitlyn Clark for A'ja Wilson, whom he still probably calls 'AJ' with 'he/him' pronouns. Drives me insane. Anyway, when I had A'ja, he only offered me Scoot for A'ja, going cheap af on me. I actually think Quinones belonged in that deal instead of Kuminga, but whatever. The only difference, according to LTS, in his offer to me vs. the final trade? Scoot lost his purple potential. The baffling value he has on players in this league.... infuriating.

3. The Pacers and Dan Spooner. I think Herb Jones is still the star in Indiana, but no one can say with a straight face they expected this performance by Indiana thus far. The Pauly Pacers are known for 1st sim mirages where they dominate and then fall off the ledge, but not these Pauly Pacers. They are a legit threat to the Pistons' throne.
Somehow I manage.

1. I feel like this season, more than the other two I have been a part of, There's a lot more teams in contention fr a playoff spot. Not necessarily saying there are more contenders this season, just that the divisions just seem closer than previous years.

2. Ware having to go show the mental toughness of constantly being traded only to have the trade be removed. Even in real life you don't see that kind of action. He finally found a new home so let's see if he can help the Magic make a playoff run.

3. Lastly, I'll go with a little bit of my team. Not really one of the craziest things but it's still crazy to me to finally see some improvement with my team. While the record doesn't show it now, or likely at all this season, my players are coming around slowly. Lee just keeps looking more and more like a stud SG, as evidenced by his 47 point game. Once we figure out defense, we're gonna be a tough team to beat.......in about 2-3 seasons.
