S70 Town Hall #1: "No Ragrets"

Post by MexicanMamba »

With the off-season winding down, there's always things we can look back on and wish that we had done differently. It could be certain free agency offers, a specific draft choice you passed on, a trade you wish you had or had not made, etc. So, tell us all what is your biggest sim regret from this off-season? And what would you do differently if you had a do-over. If you're happy with your off-season, pick another team and tell us something you'd have done differently during their off-season instead.

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.

Due: Sim 1 deadline.

I'm actually really happy with my offseason. I could've grinded a little harder on the Remy deal to try and get a younger rookie contract guy, but honestly, I was happy that the Raptors sent a solid enough offer for Remy without me having to hassle anyone down and wanted to accept out of principle because so few people send me offers. I guess I could've tried flipping Logan Gilley and Harlan Halvorson in a three way to save 8 mm in dead cap space, but in the grand scheme of things, I don't think that made a huge difference.

UFA landed me a lot of targets I was hoping to get, so no complaints there. I missed out on a lot of resigns, but the only one I missed out on that stayed blue was Antonio Blakeney, and he was the only one I made a day 1 offer to...I wouldn't want to pay him what he actually got.

So I think I'll have to pick another team I'd do something differently with, and the first two that come to mind did pretty much the same thing: Bobcats and Warriors. The Bobcats traded Funkhouser for Smalley and the Warriors traded A'ja Wilson for Delmer Bricker. In either position, I would've probably been a little more patient and tried to get better return. I think both the Lakers and the Suns will re-flip their investments for more than they paid for them (or if they don't, they certainly could). I also wouldn't have cut huge contracts to have twice as much dead cap space as actual salary going to players on my team, but hey, what do I know about strategy and tactics. I know greeple was hoping for A'ja for McClung, which after my day 1 UFA, wouldn't have happened, so he was right not to wait for that, but who knows what else would've been out there at day 60?

For the most part, I am happy with my offseason and the flexibility I may still have in the near future. Re-signing Daniel Johnson, adding Fabian Hub, trading for Dennis Funkhouser and Gregory Kozak, and NOT dealing Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jody Kinsella were all positive things for the season and franchise. However, if I had one misstep, mostly from an emotional standpoint, I wish I would've offered Safi the $ 70 million I gave Hub to bring him back. I tried to get cute and bring him back in cheaper, but I would've loved to have made sure Safi played his entire career in L.A.

If I were to pull an outside team to change something about their off-season, I'd probably go with the Houston Rockets. First, they (admittedly so) rushed their UFA 1 bids and kind of blew it. Some of their bids were poor, basically equaling a wasted bid which hurts when it's your primary source of building around your superstar. Then, when they whiffed on UFA 1, I think it was a mistake to offer 60+ mil on Thomas Walker just out of desperation. Instead, he could've held onto such a large cap amount and held out waiting for some of these teams wanting to cut out these tax bills by dumping contracts, some of which would've possibly been just as useful as who 78 spent the money on.

By Far Dejuan Baker.
He is a player that I have sent so many requests for over the years.
I had huge wood for him in the height of his career and I fully expected him to stay with a blue potential through this camp.
Now that he deep throated the locker room, the contract, which was already generous, becomes absolutely absurd.
Guess he figured nobody was off limits at the orgy because he <expletive deleted> me pretty good

I will not complain about the deal I made with the Pels for Baba Miller.
It did sting to see that I traded what ended up being the #2 pick in the draft, but he jumped to 2 from 13 in the lottery and I ain't a hater like that.
Props to the Pels good fortune and I'm happy with my return.
What cha gonna do

There are two things I really wish happened during the offseason. I really wanted to move up in the draft and select Jared McCain, the point guard from the Sacramento Kings. I could have benefitted with him as a trade chip in my talks with several teams. The other was adding a more impact player in the frontcourt to pair with Frank Chavez. I did not look hard enough to be honest but I really liked adding Jaden Akins and Remy Martin to add more scoring to this lineup so overall I'm really happy with the offseason. I will continue to tinker with the lineup to try and find a true point guard and frontcourt help as the season progresses.

Overall one can’t be too disappointed returning the top 8 squad members of a championship team through UFA. So it’s been a relatively great off-season as we look to repeat. That said, there are a few things I wish I could’ve handled better… I wish I had been a little more able to be active in free for all or round 2/3 bids. Also I wish I could’ve told @AngryBanana to suck on DEEZ NUTS sooner instead of entertaining his dick-teasing trade offers. Trying to think of any other regrets… I don’t have much. We are excited for the banner hanging in the Colliseum!

The first thing I regret is ever asking Doug about our trade idea. I was in a vulnerable place, and was thinking "let's pivot to this". Then I actually looked at what the trade would entail and it was just not it. It was not worth it in the slightest for me. I apologize for wasting Doug's time, not that he cares.

The second thing I regret, is not taking a trade proposal that was offered to me before TC. I have talked to this GM extensively about this trade since then and they know why I am feeling the way I am. The guy we discussed got boosted to the moon, and I was just "meh" when I should have said "yea" before TC. Well, that is life in PBSL. And as such I will move on with life as it is and pivot.

I’m not sure if I regret it yet but I talked with quite a few GMs about trading the #3 pick. The offers I got weren’t bad but my gut just told me to stay the course. My biggest issue right now is cap space and I was hoping to offload some contracts but most of the offers I got would have me bring in bigger contracts and I felt that wasn’t where I’m at yet with my rebuild. Maybe in a year or two I can start looking to make those big moves but for now I think I’m gonna try and wait out my big contracts and then start making the big moves. It could be the right move or I could end up regretting it for the rest of my life. But hopefully in the near future and I can be a GM that participates in the game changing moves. For now, I’m hoping I can develop the young guys I have on the team now. Only time will tell if I made the right decision or not

There were a few key decisions I made this offseason that I'll run through:

First, matching Kofi Blaqs contract. 4 year 55m with a player option to boot. I had it in my mind I was matching anything that came through unless it was a clear poison pill. I don't think this is terrible, especially since he finally bumped up to B/B in TC, although I do with it was slightly less.

Second, was keeping Joseph Ford through FA using my bird rights. I ended up offering him 4 year 60m, and this is one thing I would change. I'm not sure how many people offered him, but I don't think it ended up being many, or people were especially that high on him. So I probably overpaid for this player, but he's a solid B/B, and one of the best 6th men in the league last year, so I don't have too much of a problem if he helps me get back to the ship.

Finally, and probably my biggest mistake, was that I offered most of my MLE, 20m, to a 35yo B/B at the time to help with some depth, and then TC came and went and he got absolutely hammered down to a G/G. So now I grossly overpaying for that player when I could have used the MLE to offer someone else who would have been able to help a bit more.

Overall, I'm only disappointed I didnt collect enough points this past offseason to train Giddey even more. I probably should have shopped my cap space more aggressively after RFA but I saw a lot of talent in the UFA pool and thought I could convince some of those guys to defect my way. Womp womp. But all in all, I feel pretty good about the offseason and am excited to see the team grow.

Aside from my cap situation I'm very pleased with my offseason. I retained my two RFA's who both popped blue current immediately. I made my big trade with the Suns, sending out A'ja for Delmer (more on this in a bit). I had a mostly successful training camp thanks to insurance, and things are just about where I want them.

If I could alter the A'ja / Rockwell for Bricker deal, I would. First, I was shopping A'ja since last season and had several deals fall apart. Ware wasn't on the table for me because I have enough big players (even though he would instantly be the biggest and best). And my attempt to grab Huo from Minny drove the GM out of the league! I could have waited for stewards to hop in, but I would still be up a creek either without a go-to PG. I would have to keep Rockwell so someone could run the offense, but eliminating that contract or getting value from that contract would have been the better option. Rockwell did NOT perform as I had hoped in Golden State.

So when I heard Bricker was available? I jumped and posted. In fact, I was so excited I kicked in some points for the relief I'd get losing the Rockwell contract while ALSO gaining a more than serviceable PG. But it did cost me a purple rookie, and that is why I regret kicking points into the deal...though I do not regret making the deal at all.
Somehow I manage.

What I would do different goes back to seasons prior. I would have not been lazy with accumulating points. Knowing seasons ago there will be a time where I would have needed to save up. Instead I just was lazy. I could have been in a better position but I have on one to blame but myself. Sometimes that is just the way the cookie crumbles.
