Mavs Pre-Season Presser Season 70

Post by LazyTitanSmash »

Things have been looking bright in Dallas, we’ve turned the corner. The Mavericks are going to try and live in the playoffs for a while.

Going to the conference final was amazing. I will always wonder what would have happened if we hadn’t lost game 2 by 2 to the world champ Pistons. Last year's team finally fell into place. The whole team played their asses off. In the end both of the centers want to play a different style of basketball than the rest of the team. Once the world champs knock us out we knew we were going to have to retool.

It was always going to be a short run with that starting 5. First, after having had a massive amount of publicity on Looney and having shopped him to almost every team, I was pretty sure he was going to get a bag, so I don’t think I even sent him an offer. (He was always going to be a rental, the contract was just too big for the production.)

Next, Poole was not going to be renewed (unless he came back for vet min.) We thought that Poole's starting days were coming to an end, and with the lack of quality point guards in the league, we were pretty sure he was going to get a bag as well. But having watched more than a few vets slip through the crack we threw him a vet min.

UFA 1 was finally a success. The goal of last year's run was to prove to Scoot that the Mavericks were for real and get him to re-sign. If scoot hadn’t signed that would have been a big disappointment. Once he signed, Kaminga decided he also wanted to run it back. Blair, a player that has come and gone from the Mavericks more than a few times, decided to be one of the only blue players to sign a vet min. We ended up getting most of the bench players we went after. (Winning really changes the way the players see your franchise.)

Our goal now is simple, we have a 1 year window with Angel on a rookie contract to slip under the tax and hold on to all this talent. To get under the tax the bench will be on the move. To make it happen we will have to reduce one of the starters salaries. The most likely candidate is Kaminga. Kaminga for a blue pot rookie would be ideal or a cheaper g/b. Kaminga is almost for sure going to be gone by the end of the year.

Even with a more than a few players on the move, I think we will be able to get a 6 or 7 seed.

The whole idea behind resigning Scoot was to sign and trade him for a future all-star. He’s 28 in his prime and just led a team to the Conference Finals. He’s one of the best SG or SF in the league.

I picked up Hershal Gilmore before UFA because I wasn’t going to have any cap space if I signed Scoot. He’s athletic, tallish and scores inside and defends. He’s 24 and already b/b and still growing so we’ll see what happens.

TC went great. Dom went Purple. Reese got better. Scoot slipped a bit, but that might just be a chance to improve his passing (since he’s only 28 and training is still around). Lester Quinones got a bump to his 3 point potential and his defense potential. I think I offered him to the entire league, now I’m super happy no one grabbed him up. We ridding with Quinones. (Although that will be next year).

Our problem is we have no point guard. I feel like I’ve been shopping for point guards for most of my GMing career.

Desert here,

You have 3 players on your team with very identical skill sets. DJ, Reese, and Gilmore. 1 would think flipping a wing for a point guard should be in your cards. Have you thought about shipping Reese or the more expensive DJ(easier to make money work) for A point guard like Funk, or Daniel Johnson? At some point you're going to have to bring in diversity to your lineup. Your team is made up of clones of each other. 80% of your cap is in wings who all do the same thing and aren't stuffing the stat nor defending. So at one point do you realize this team doesn't work? Is it after you resign Reese and have a 400m tax bill? Or when DJ retires? Just asking...
This is your captain speaking

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: Did the divisional reshuffle play any part in influencing your plans for the season? Would you play anything any differently if you were in another conference or division?

Not at all. The only thing that confused me was 2 seasons ago I thought the winner of the conference was going to pick team for the reshuffle so I made a run at the division title. Its a good thing it didn't happen because that year the kings beat me by a game for the division.

Also, because I hated the valuations in the trade market, it made it easier to plan out how I was going to tackle the up coming years.(Also it helped that Angel was blue in year 2.) Despite the "30 is the new 25" I think the trade market is starting rectify itself. (Hopefully sooner than later) The value of older really good players is coming down and the value of rookies is going up. The longer old players languish on their teams, the more apparent it will be to everyone that their value should be lower. Once that happens I will be more apt to trade. And for all of you that think old players are more valuable than top tier rookies I got Scoot here looking for a new team, and he's still two year away from 30!

You've spent a long time devaluing older players for rookie contract players who aren't actually good yet. What kind of return do you reasonably expect to get for Scoot having identified players of his ilk as relatively useless bad investments?

ill send you chris porn and 3pts, post it
Somehow I manage.

Nice. I've been waiting for this one. He'll be 28, 29, 30, 31... for his contract. While he lost his purple at 28 boo!!! Proving my point that he was probably better at 27 but we'll see. But he did actually have +10 in TC this year, with any luck 29 TC will be around +3, 30 with a -3 and 31 -15. So he should be close to the same player until 31. Part of my assessment of my player and there contract is trying to line up their max contract ending at 30 ideally.

If I ship him out it will probably be with Kaminga for a top 5 rookie that still needs some time to bake. So that would be 5 years of scoot at a steady level + Kaminga for 1 or 2 years for a quality not ready yet rookie. That should be the going price of older players.

To be fair he's 28 not 30+, but yeah he's almost there.

Wheres your Presser? I got questions

DJ is going to play PF for most of his career. DJ and Reese are with me at least until 28 and I might rid them their whole careers. Reese is especially a once in a generation talent. But DJ is currently way more productive. Gilmore is on the block along with just about the rest of my team. But PF/SF DJ is here to stay and Reese is SG for life.

On my team. Doyle Olsen is doing well. But my bench is just mid this season.

This is a bust season semi on purpose. Still planning to sneak under the tax this season. So while we are definitely not tanking we are planing on getting under the cap and resetting for the team lead by DJ and Reese next year.
