Town Hall #12: Final Grade

Post by greepleairport »

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.

Due: Sim 12 deadline.

Since we don't have a new awards coordinator, I'm guessing no awards will go out for GMOTY.

So grade yourself, from A+ to F, on your performance as a GM in S68, and include notes on your report card as to why you earned that grade.

Then show your spouse / guardian / kid your report card and explain why you think you deserve to be treated for dinner at your favorite restaurant.
Somehow I manage.

Well, season isn't over yet and I don't want to jinx myself. But I think an A+ for the season so far. My biggest move was to make NO move and ride the wave of this squad i've built together over the course of the last few seasons. I've noticeably been quiet on the trade front, I've engaged a little here and there but not much traction or any move that made sense for me. On top of that, we lost a key starter for 3 months of the season, and have been on our best run of the season as of the last month of the season. Hopefully we can keep that going. April 13th will be a MASSIVE game for my division, being only 1 game back of the Rockets. SAVE THE DATE. I've never had a 1st round bye I don't think... and it would be nice to get one. But not holding my breath

I hate self evaluations, but here we go. I have the largest payroll in the league by a wide margin, so, I expected these types of regular season results. It'll be the playoffs that will end up pissing me off, I'm sure. Regardless of the cost of the roster, I'd say I did some good work to put myself in this position.

I got Thomas Walker in UFA for the MLE. I re-signed Harold Schiff to a big expiring deal to give myself trade flexibility, which I ended up moving to add Ron Harper Jr. who has fit in seamlessly so far. I flipped JVG and some minor pieces to bring back Fabian Hub, adding much needed size and great position flexibility.

Safi, Banchero, Davis continue to be who they've always been.

So, a huge bank roll, some savvy trades, and the overall #1 seed later, I think it's an easy A for the regular season.

But the regular season won't be my final grade, so, come talk to me in a couple weeks instead.

My grade hinges on the final sim. I'm a half game in front of the jazz for being the worst team in the league. If I continue losing more than them, I give myself a B+, as far as my team is concerned. If I lose the worst in the league race to the Jazz, I give myself a B-. I think I could have shopped Bryon Nelson around more aggressively, as he has had a wonderful season, and he's priced to move. I did move RHJr. for a decent enough return, though, and I'm happy about that. I started the season thinking my team might be closer to a .500 team, though, so back tracking to tanking was definitely a midseason pivot that would have been better to execute earlier in the year.

I did have Ron Harper Jr., though. He forced me to win games.

As a PBSL GM, however, I give myself an A. I think there's more to this league than just managing your team, sometimes, and I've been very active this season even though my team is crap. Taking on the town hall as a media coordinator responsibility was fun and engaging, but I do think my media coordinator reign could come to an end soon. I'm interested in learning other aspects of league management, but I dont want to bite off more than I can chew, so we'll see what happens next year. Definitely had a lot of fun with my responsibilities and everything this year.
Somehow I manage.

It's pretty hard to grade this season, so before I do that, I guess I'll take a look at all the GM things I did. And before I do that, I'll note that this season was especially tough to grade because I'm coming off a championship season and have a team that could very well be good enough to be in the mix for a championship again, but with the sheer amount of injuries I've had to important players (226 total days so far, 115 belonging to Mac McClung over 2 injuries, 54 to Antonio Blakeney, 27 to Remy Martin, 10 a piece to Brandon Ingram and Earnest Fisher, and 8 to Charles Alleman), I don't have a good idea of whether or not this team is championship caliber or not and am still in the process of sussing out what my optimal game plan is.

But anyway, the GM stuff:

Draft: Ended up getting the last y/g player late in the first round
RFA: Signed Kamari Brown...instantly matched, but showed Chicago is still potentially a free agent destination
UFA: Didn't do much but get all my guys back at contracts I don't mind paying them
Trades: Only completed one in what's becoming a tougher environment to trade in. Swapped an expiring g/g Dirks and y/b sophomore Alex Fudge (and the y/g guy I drafted plus points) for expiring Brandon Ingram and Charles Jarrett...we'll see how far I get in the trade deadline before evaluating this trade for me, but I think it was a good trade for the Raptors and hopefully other GMs around the league know I'm not afraid to give good value
Gameplanning: Currently sitting at 4th seed in the tough Alpha, which isn't bad considering the injuries, but probably isn't great either

Overall, I did what I could, but that didn't end up being a whole lot this year. I'll give myself a C+, which is probably roughly equivalent to an S on the IamQuailman grading scale

Season 68 technically starts once the year is switched over. So if we're including the full year with off-season included I feel very good about my work.

Off-season grade- A
I was able to get rid of some contracts to avoid a 3rd year in the tax. While also gaining some assets in the process. Getting Trayce and Herman in the same off-season was great work on my part. I had a very good draft pickup and that big is 1 training away from blue(I think or I made it up).

In season grade- C
This is only this high of a grade because of in season trades. I was able to get rid of the Garland contract again clearing out cap space and setting up for the future. I was then able to get rid of Forbes contract to put myself in position to potentially offer a max type of contract in FA. Last good thing I was able to do was get enough points to train Maxwell insides. The importance of this cannot be understated. Maxwell was 1 training away from purple but bigger than that, his inside is 1 point from being maxed out and it's the 1 thing holding him back from taking off offensively. I started the season with 3 points and worked my way up to 30. By training the inside NOW I ensure he can continue to grow into his A potential inside during TC next season and not have to wait a full season to start improving on TC the following year. It was imperative I got that done this season to not stunt his growth. He is now my purple POT future and I feel good about he Herman Trayce and Ross going forward. The reason I am only giving myself a C is because I thought I would be able to compete truly for a playoff spot. And that hasn't been the case, maybe I still backdoor into one but it's been depressing being too good for a top pick yet not good enough for a playoff spot. As it stands I'm set to be the second to last lottery pick and that's the definition of mediocrity. I hate that for us. We started off terrible and then started winning too many games. It would have felt grimy to bench Ross in favor of trying to get a top 5 pick so I couldn't do that. He definitely won us way too many games.

Overall grade on S68 is a B-. Very good things for the future but I hate this middle of the pack performance
This is your captain speaking

I'll give myself a C overall.

Offseason: A+
I managed to reset my tax by sending out Ridenhour and Looney. I signed Gradey Dick in RFA. I got Ingram and Jarrett on 1 year deals. It was a great time to be a Raptors fan.

In-season: F
The Raptors were terrible. I traded Ingram and Jarrett away on day 60 and started tanking. This season has been a complete disaster from a competitive perspective. I am disappointed this season ended so poorly but I know we are going to be better soon. Overall, I think I get a C. There was some good and some bad so I think a C is fair.

Cavs A+++

Two seasons ago, nobody knew who Jonathan Isaac and Devin Vassell were. I stuck with my gameplan. It's never easy when you are rebuilding. I trained Isaac on only one thing, his quickness. Today, Isaac is a freak at PF. Same for Vassell. Both are playing at a high level, and both can carry the team.

Let's not forget the trade of the century. Trading for Darius Garland was a genius move. Garland is averaging 17 pts per game and almost 10 assists per game. Those are elite stats.

It's no secret the Cavs are a top team in the Alpha Conference. There is no question the Cavs are making a deep run in the playoffs.

Acknowledged Jonathan Isaac!

I'm giving myself a D. It was going to be a B before the last 2 sims.

I was going to give myself a B because I just went over the tax and I'm sure there was a way to trade Poole for a slight worse point guard and get under the tax; if I'd have done that I would have given myself an A.

My real problems is I cut all my greens, because they didn't look like that added much. Their stats were very average. Now I know greens matter. Cutting my greens forced me to play Clark; and gave my blue player more minutes. My blues couldn't handle all those minutes. Than, Candice Parker got hurt and the wheels fell off. Now I know my team is dependent on Parker, which is good to know but throws a wench in my off season plans.

B+

I paid off my tax bill and tanked myself into a likely top-5 pick. Job well done. I did not get an A, however, because I mismanaged my roster throughout the season. I needed to deal away the Ridenhour and Blair contracts but did not even bother to pick up the phone. I'll need to find a way to deal with those this offseason to hit the ground running. Overall, I'm encouraged by Rainwater's successful rookie season so I think there is something to build around now and hopefully the draft will yield another building block for the team moving forward.

I like Josh's style of grading:

Draft: Got the big bump - and was able to draft in the top three when I was slated for seven. Changed my plan from trading for Akins to drafting Lew Alcindor, which I think is a long term plus. He was also the prospect I was most excited about, for the pick, after reviewing the draft page. Gotta give it an A
RFA: Inactive due to only having my MLE - so N/A
UFA: Really, the only notable move in UFA was the MLE in the first round. I was initally not that excited about adding Pearson as I thought there were better players that would fit my roster that either did not sign or were signed at MLEs (or less) after rd.1. However, Pearson wound up being an important player for this team, providing great defense on the wing, having the best Defensive Efficiency on the team. Also, we got an unexpected bench gem in Joseph Thatch, who was on fire to begin the year and slowed down after my mid-season trade. Due to only really having two (1.5?) players who provide any worthwhile mins come to the team, B-
Trades: This was another good year for me. First I was able to obtain Anthony Morrow. Who is my money for MIP. He has grown a lot in this year because he started almost immediately and became an offensive outlet that was sorely missing from this team. The second move I made of note, was moving on from Blair in a contract dump to get under the tax cap. At the time I was looking to not get a tax bill, where I could have used the contract in another move if I wasn't so eager to move on from him. So while it was a great move, it hampered my ability to make more moves. Then I was able to trade for Ebbe Clauer, which I would argue was trade of the year. He turned my team around with his improved play over Benefield. Let's go ahead and put it at an A for that as well.
Gameplanning: While my team has improved since getting Ebbe, I do think if I tried harder during the season I would not be fighting all the way to this last sim for a right to the playoffs. So because of my laziness, I grade this a D+

So if we look at the grades, and all the totality before this sim (which could sway the grade hard): I would say it equates to somewhere in the B range.

I would give myself a overall grade of C+. I really didn't do much this season. I think there's always room for improvement. The offseason for my team was good from the standpoint of doing things that kept me out of a higher tax bill. Letting BI go and trading Hub gave me tax relief. Retaining each would have had me in a deep hole. The best part of the off season was of course TC. The past TC saw my core guys like PeeWee, Newland and Miller have really good camps with Newland getting a generous bump. Other than that I have been average as a Game planer (going same) and maybe need to spice things up come post season since I feel like I am playing with house money. If I was in the running for top of the conference my grade would be a little different but I am good with the overall grade of C+.

I'd give myself a B
This season started off as a bit of a work in progress in the first few sims trying to look for some alternative rotations but I reverted back to whats worked during the Herb era and we were able to coast during the 2nd half of the season.
Quincy Johnson has probably been one of the more under-the-radar signings of the last FA period as he's been really solid in his role and despite what at least one GM may think, Dan Spooner has been excellent this year as the full-time starter.
Happy to have finally won the damn division for the first time in what feels like forever but ultimately we'll be judged in the playoffs
Pacers Ring of Honor
P.Ewing (90-93, 98) - R.Pierce (90-91) - S.Augmon (91-96) - D.Brown (93-96) - D.Strong (91-97, 99-02) - P.Pierce (98-05, 12-13) - D.Williams (05-17) - I.Shumpert (11-16) - D.Dedmon (13-18) - J.Williams (19-25, 31-32)
