S68 Town Hall #2: Sim 1 overreactions

Post by greepleairport »

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.

Due: Sim 2 deadline.

Sim 1 happened. The Mavericks lost 1 game. The Suns won 1 game. The Pacers lead the competitive Silky Johnson division. These are all facts. What, from these facts, or other sim 1 facts, has driven you to completely overreact in an unreasonable way??
Somehow I manage.

The Mavericks might be one of the most future-proofed teams in the next few seasons. Their young stars have taken the leap we all expected out of Dominatrix & Scoot. Angel has been a huge surprise. I think they might be the new favorite in the weak-ass Loredo Division, but that said, I think this start will come down a little bit from only 1 loss. They have an impressive road record through 10 games, but 3 of those wins are the Warriors, Suns & Pelicans (combined 6 wins between the 3... out of a combined 22 games played). That said, they had an impressive close win over the Pacers, and their only loss was a 3-point road loss to the Celtics. The next 2 sims will be telling as they have a much more difficult schedule. I still think they are a fantastic squad with a bright future, but the current win-loss pace is probably unsustainable.

Phoenix's slow start had me shook for a minute, because they were not a team I had pegged as competition for the race to the bottom. But, records never tell the full story this early in the season. Through their first 7 games, they haven't faced a single team below .500, and of the 3 .500 teams they did face, 2 were on the road (which they lost) and 1 was at home (which they won). Speaking of which, they've only had 3 home games, with 2 of those being against Division-leading teams (Rockets and Mavs). So, while I don't think they'll be great, they're definitely going to pick things up as the season progresses and rise from the bottom.

My Team: I was honestly shocked to be second in my division, with a 7-2 record. I really did not think that my team was going to be one to compete. Upon looking at my team page I was further shocked to see I did this while DJ has only played about 12 mins the whole season. I believed that he would be a crux of my teams success since he is largely my only PG. However, my offseason bet on Albert Morrow. He stepped in to play for DJ and played very well, where he just edged out of the top 25 of the scorers. However, upon further - further looking at the team's roster I realized that majority of my games were home games. I also played teams like the Jazz twice, the Grizz. However, a silver lining is that I can also include the the Cavs, Suns, and Pistons as wins while taking the Rockets down to the wire. I am fully prepared to fall from this winning position and be closer to .500 because I feel like that has been my luck lately. It only helps me realize that Blair is no longer needed for my team with Griner and AG playing very well together and Dino as a good backup option.

Other team: The Nuggets going 4-4, while having a negative point differential. This is a new GM, who understands more of the financial side of the house compared to the game planning side, so I can not fault him for the slow start. I had worked with him on giving him a basis of a plan (based in part on the only viewable gameplan from the Nuggets last year). I am sure he made some edits to accommodate his team better, but there are for sure some opportunities to tweak his roster and plan that I hope he looks into and makes. Additionally, his losses are at least "good" losses, if that is possible. Where it was against the Bulls, the Bucks (who he split games with), the Rockets, and the Trailblazers. So all of the teams were either good teams, seasoned GMs who can throw a good gameplan out there and have a team over produce, or a combination of the two.

Overreaction? That there's a bunch of teams that should be looking to cash-in on players that don't make sense on their roster. The Raptors and Ingram/Jarrett? Go get what you can because things won't get better. The Bucks don't have a GM, but it's probably time to go hunt for a new home for Wemby to start a more thorough restart since we've seen the ceiling. Magic, Hawks, Pels, Wizards are all other possible candidates to try flipping quality players to the highest bidder if they can find a sweet deal. There's little to no upside in keeping competitive, aging players this season cause you aren't flying up the standings.

I want to piggyback off of Mamba's answer here. Not only are there a bunch of teams that should be looking to cash-in on players that don't make sense on their roster, but pretty much every team should be doing that. Why? Check out the Houston Rockets. They wen 6-0 in the preseason, and so far they're 11-0 in the regular season. They've only played 3 home games. Their schedule hasn't been a cakewalk either. They've won 2 against the Spurs, they beat the 7-2 Pistons by 53, and they beat the Pacers, Celtics and Nuggets on the road.

Sion James might be the best player in the league right now. He's the only player that is on the league leaders in points, rebounds, and assists (and steals) without being on the leaderboard in minutes or turnovers. The addition of Alphonse Morelock is a game changer. He was so important to the Nuggets success last season and is the second leading scorer on a packed Rockets team with stats stuffed in every category. Larry Williams is making a great 6th man of the year bid off the bench.

They're going to run away with it, and if you're thinking about buying or selling, the longer you take, the smaller the market's going to be.

Not much overreaction over here as I'm still trying to figure out how my team plays, just calculating the data that was given to me in this first Sim. I had a mediocre 4-4 record to start, but I blame a lot of that on the way I setup the depth chart. I believe I put too many minutes on my bench players which caused all of my starters to have lower than expected minutes, resulting in lower than expected performances. I was very surprised to see that I had 3 big blowout losses (15+ points), I believed I would be a team that can compete with anybody and I was a little upset to see how bad my team performed in those games. It's a long season so I made a few changes to my DC, and hopefully this next Sim will prove to be more where my expectations align.

I like AB's format for this.

My team: The Ron Harper Jr. effect. There's no reason my team should be sitting at .500, besides Ron Harper Jr. Two not so great losses (Nets and Hawks, who have their own RHJr. type impact with Phil Smith hanging around), and two pretty respectable losses (2pt loss to the #1 Pacers, 6pt loss to the #1 Mavericks). We handled some bums and beat the 5-3 Kings, too. Aside from RHJr., there's nothing really different about the Warriors this year. We're just better overall with a game changer like RHJr.

Something else: garbageman's overreaction. I'm overreacting to that. He's got a solid point. With a start like that, I'm not sure I see anyone on their schedule that can beat them for at least another month or so. If they lose it's a fluke or injury. Has to be. So, as a result, i'm bumping my trade block with RHJr., because someone needs him more than I do. And probably everyone should be calling Atlanta right now for Phil Smith. And I think Ned Lomax might be a phone call away out of Orlando with an unfortunate start to the season like that. There are lots of really, really good players available, and I think it's a buyer's market. Anyone ready to buy gets the pick of the litter. And it's some good ass litter.
Somehow I manage.

My team: I'm over the moon with my team 9-1. I don't expect it to keep going at this pace but by Sim 6 I'll have more wins than I've ever had (38). I think I know where I'm going, train up my guys and keep an eye on that tax. I want to control over the Gary Loredo Division so I can pick who's in the Division next year. So my over reaction is planning: who to train, how much will I spend on the tax this year and which teams I want to face in my division next, because I know I winning this Division.

The League: Trailblazers and Suns, thought they were going to be my biggest competition. Spurs? 4-4 no way that holds. They are better than that for sure. The Pacers, Bulls, Nuggets, Bucks doesn't make sense. Those teams are always dominate but it looks like the wheels are falling off Silky Johnson Division. Also thought the Cavaliers were going to be more dynamic. The Suns, Trailblazers and Cavs might just need a few more years to be ready. Everyone else looks pretty expected.

My team: What happens when you have too much depth? Some guys get pinched for minutes when they really need it. I’m not going to overreact to a 2-6 start but it highlights the need for a true starting point guard that can get guys like Lomax the ball more. Morelock has been a great answer scoring wise in the paint but he needs to use his 7’2 body to his advantage and average more than 5 rebounds a game. I’m not going to overreact too much but some guys are taking up minutes that maybe others should be getting right now. Also, if you’re looking to contend with the big boys, come with the offers.

The League: I like to look at the point differentials to determine which teams will be good and which will be bad more so than the overall record. The point diff generally evens out around Sim 4 but from what I noticed, the Lakers and Rockets clearly are going to have great teams considering the talent on their rosters. The Bobcats should be able to challenge Dallas as the season progresses and the TWolves peak my curiosity… Maybe the Robo knows something the previous owner didn’t?

I think my slow start is enough to realize I need to reset and send off Ingram and Jarrett to an actual contender. Ingram is not taking the scoring title by storm like I wanted him to and that is disappointing. I think my team's lack of a true point guard is hurting the scoring. Jarrett is a bit too slow to be the primary ball handler so my team is suffering because of it. I expect to hit the trade block soon and see if I can build around Kamari Brown and Gradey Dick with some new assets. As far as the league, I think the Bucks are in a similar predicament I am in with the Raptors so I'm trying to avoid their fate. I know the team is without a GM right now, but their star players are not getting any younger so hopefully the stewards are able to make some deals and get them some interesting prospects that a new GM can develop. I would hate to see that team rot away and get nothing in return.

If I play my lineups correctly then Raphael Gordon will be an All-Star. The game is meant to be manipulated and like Vaughn Millsap at C a few years ago, sometimes a special wing can hang with the beefy bigs just fine. I just need to figure out a way to get Darryl Nelson in at SG and this game is truly broken.

League-wide, I think the Utah Jazz can win 25 games this season. I think they have their very own Stockton/Malone duo with Sanders and Liddell and they can play spoiler throughout this season, even on autopilot. I do think Booger Smith needs some training so hopefully that happens at the All-Star break. Overall, I think Utah has a bright future for once.

My overreaction is also based on my prediction. I felt the Mavs could have a shot at the finals if they can somehow figure out the rockets. But there's not much divisional competition standing in their way so they will get a high seed based off winning the division. I wish they were playing Reese but..... Yeah. I'm pulling for them simply because let's get some new blood in the championship circle. Scoot is a beast and can get it done

My overreaction is me not getting in a answer to the 1st town hall question. When posting in skype, if would have read that the timer stops once the sim is ran, I could have got my response in on time. Instead of using valuable time to mentioned in the group chat that I forgot to do it. As far as the league, I would say the overreaction of having a fire sale cause of the rockets 11-0 start is ridiculous. A hot start is nice but it's a long season. Take it from a team that started off hot last season and then crashed and burned when it counted.

My team: as expected we got off to a rocky start. I liked what I saw from Tony Lee. Looking like he’s not too far from reaching his potential. If Zike can start hitting 3s more consistently then our offense can really start soaring. Rebounding is also going need to be a main focus for our team. Can’t win too many games if we are giving up too many second chances and not getting enough second chances ourselves.

The League: holy cow 11-0 Rockets?! Glad to know I won’t have to worry about a division title this year. Mavs look good too but we almost beat them so they better be sure to bring their A game every week. Are the Nuggets going to go from losing in the conference finals to not making the playoffs? Find out on another episode of PBSL!
