San Antonio Spurs Preseason Presser - S68

Post by Eazy P »

Hello Everyone and welcome to the San Antonio Spurs preseason presser. We thank everyone who could attend for attending. 1st off we will like to start off by talking about last season. Last season was a great year for this franchise, regular season wise. Once the playoffs arrived it seemed we lost focus a fell flat. Our fans were disappointed but still supportive. As we turn the page we are entering a new season, a season without one of our longtime stars in Brandon Ingram. We had to make choice financially and he understood that and went and took the contract Toronto offered. We wish him the best. Also we had to make another tough decision. At first we were going to keep Hub around for another season. Then after thinking about it we wanted to see what we could get for him. We were in talks with a few teams inquiring about adding him to their team. There were some really good offers and we decided to go with what the Lakers offered. With two of our key players gone we now have to figure out a way to get over the hump. It starts with me.

I feel like we do have a good mix of guys here in house. The guys also had a solid training camp top to bottom. I hope it translates on the court. The player that had the best TC on our team (top 3 leaguewide) was Tony Newland. I am so proud of how far he has come. Peewee, Miller and our newest player Richard Reed also had a nice camp. As of Now our goal is to try and make a deep playoff run this season If possible.

We don't have much more to add at the moment but we are opened to answering any questions you may have and as always will answer to the best of our ability. Thanks again for coming out.

We may be lacking depth in certain areas but if we have to go with a unorthodox lineup cause of an injury we will.

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: With BI and Hub out of San Antonio, do you think not winning a championship with them on the team was a matter of their primes not lining up with the prime years of Kirkland and the younger class, or were there other factors at play?

Random Reporter: Despite both Hub and Ingram now gone, you're still 100 million over the cap with no end in sight. Do you see yourself possibly taking a step back, trading a few older prices, and relying on the vaunted San Antonio development pipeline to create a more favorable cap situation for Kirkland's prime years?

I think it was more of me not being in my prime as a GM. Just coasting where in years past I would try things to prepare my team for potential playoff opponents. I also think that to some extent the playing styles of BI and Kirkland clashed to where one was taking the back seat to the other a lot. Hoping now that we gave Peewee the keys to the car, he will show the league why he was the top pick of the 2051 draft.

We do not plan on taking a step back anytime soon. As long as we stay in a range where we can pay off the tax we will be fine. Just gotta do other things to accumulate points to pay off taxes. As long as we can continue to develop guys on team friendly deals we will be fine. I think Peewee, Newland and Master P will be a nice trio moving forward. Jose's veteran presence has helped also with player development

Brooklyn Gazette: I know its a running joke about Spurs training camp but is there a real reason why you guys have so much success?

Great question. I think the TC gawds are the reason. They send their blessings to our organization. They know we have a reputation of patience with our players development. The players who come to San Antonio know we will make sure to help them with improving their overall game over time. We also strive to keep guys on a 12 years a Spur pace and they strive for that award also. The Heat has heat culture and we have 12 years a spur culture

I heard through the dirt sheets that @jlmarines is really second guessing his decision to not make you a sign-and-trade offer for Newland. How excited are you to have Newland on such a discount of a deal?

I was going to match but then we reached out to the team with a winning bid to see if they were interested in a sign and trade. At the time even tho I was leaning more towards matching, may have shipped him out at a discounted rate had we got an initial offer. I was weighing my options but my decision to keep him was made a easy one. IDK if a pill was dropped or not. Me Keeping him led to BI and Hub no longer being with our team. I am glad I kept him. The camp he had with the potential bumps, had I let him walk or S&T him away would have been a steal. Even tho keeping him came at the price of BI and Hub, I am happy he's still a Spur.
