S67 Town Hall #1 New Sheriff Edition

Post by Black Superman »

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Due by the start of the 2nd sim to account for the late question.

Question: Who had the "best" off-season and why? This can be draft oriented, FA oriented, or trade oriented.

Chad had the best off season for not having to deal with this for this season.

Also, Bulls had the best off season. He got three top quality players in UFA and then traded for AB on top of that. Bulls quickly became the favorites for this season in a matter of two or so sims.

Until just now, I would've had a hard time deciding between a myriad of teams, but I'm going to go with the Pistons after their recent slime campaign. Imagine having about 230mm of bad salary in g/g Curtis Rakes and b/b Jalen Warley over the next 3 seasons and being able to get rid of it for the low low price of GETTING 4 points and a comparable player to either big man. At a certain point, it's hard to know whether you should blame teams who just don't have a good idea what they need for emptying their whole point bank for a 30 year old green/green center during a rebuilding year or veteran GMs who know which GMs can be easily had and then make them offers without considering market value or the other team's needs at all. Either way, Kudos to Doug for being able to sleep at night.

I would have to agree with the Bull having the best off-season. They cashed in during the draft to get some great value. Flipped an RFA guy for pick #5 which turned into Pick #3 at not much extra cost. Nice cost controlled contract in a draft where there wasn't much after the top 3-4 picks. They tried to steal Lauri Markkanen during RFA, but not so fast my friend (appreciate the donation though to my son's fundraiser). But to their benefit, this was a blessing as they swooped in and stole Charles Alleman on a 1-yr less than max deal (WHAT) and Remy on a max (WHAT) before resigning Ken Dirks (WHAT!). Pretty incredible haul for the Bulls, who position themselves as a one of (if not) the front runners for the conference. Congrats on the great offseason!

I see the bulls getting a lot of love, I do think they had an amazing off-season and probably the best in regards to a team contending.

However I'm going to go a different route and say that what the heat did was a draft masterclass of brilliance. Trading back multiple times to collect points while also still drafting in the top 5 AND he secured a young asset in the process. It was a thing of beauty and I am happy they are working towards getting out of jail. Now hopefully they actually start adding points from over the years and trades, don't make me look bad by endorsing you!

I am going with Roberto. This is his 1st off season in a long time not having the commish responsibilities. Being the Commish takes a lot of work and him taking that load off of his shoulders is a win. I also think bringing in Johnston will help his team defensively. Just gotta avoid those key injuries.

I like the Celtics moves to keep Griner and Benfield with affordable contracts and the trade to acquire Ron Harper Jr. from the Nets. The Celtics like to slowly build good teams and do not make wild and crazy trades too often so it was fun to see them take a swing and try to compete this season.

If they haven't been mentioned yet (I'll read the other posts later), it's the Heat that deserve a nod. I don't imagine we'll see a better use of maneuvering to pile up points from a tax team. They've positioned themselves to not only chop off a nice chunk of their tax debt, they still have a really good group of young pieces to also deal or to allow to develop, if they think they can pay the bill off before RFA hits them. It's great work and I hope they pull themselves out of purgatory too with all the knowledge they've gained.

Agree the Bulls. My #1 priority was Remy Martin. I was outbidded by the Bulls. I think Remy Martin is game changer and I expect a monster season by Martin.

I'm going to go with Kavarga!
Having the inside look on all the draft offers, our trade was not a foregone conclusion, but he wanted Cambell enough to offer the best package.
And I looked hard after the Chavez RFA disruption came through.
Multiple teams questioned whether he would pull the trigger on Cambell with Funkhouser already in the locker-room.
Not only was it a ballsy move to push forward, I believe they will compliment each other well and lift the Cats in the near future.
What cha gonna do

I was going to say the Bulls picking up Remy Martin. The Heat also killed it cutting down their tax. I also feel pretty solid about my off season. But that Pistons needed badly to clear cap space. If they didn't they were going to be hurting for a the next couple of years. That cap space clearing is going to help them out for a while. So I'm going with the Pistons.

I'll throw in a team not yet named - Nets. Holding out all last season on Ron Harper Jr., only to score Primo Spears and Supreme Cook and points was singly the most savvy move all offseason. RPF had a plan and executed to perfection.

Shoutout to the Heat for their draft trades and trade assets acquired, Bulls, and Mavericks. I mean, maybe the Mavs rough 1-6 start will shake things up a bit for their DC / GP, but trading up to nab Angel Reese was a brilliant use of assets that he had held on to for many seasons, waiting for the right player.

Anyway, all those teams, and Bobcats for trading up for Campbell, too.
Somehow I manage.

Utah Jazz

Congrats on paying off your tax bill. I legit thought I was going to finish before you did so kudos on a job well done. You have been in tax hell before and still never bitched about how long it took to pay your debts off. Mad respect. You just collected those points and eventually counted them to glory. Here's to new beginnings for the gents and aliens in Salt Lake.

I'm gonna go with the Heat. The #1 pick was turned into a future 1st, 2 picks in the same draft, 3 players (2 of them with blue potential under 24), and 30 points. There are MVP-caliber players who have been traded for less. Looking at the Heat, you'd have no idea that they're a team in tax jail, and it's all due to the work Lowry put into maximizing their best asset. It's so easy to sit back and suck in points here and there when you're in tax jail, but Lowry's shown just how effective you can be, and how solid your team can look, when you're actively working on paying off your debt.
