Question #10 - Arguments for best trade this season

Which move has been the best this season? Why is it such a good move?

I think Antonio Gates for Antonio Blakeney is an obvious choice here. It's a textbook example of a team with the auxiliary pieces for a run getting a win-now player (the best one on the market) and a team that is looking for a reset getting a player to build around (the best one on the market). Whether or not the Celtics remain patient with Gates or cash him in before he's ready, it gives them a chance to reset and extend the window to have flexibility over the next half decade. Blakeney's impact speaks for itself as the Suns are having the kind of season that confirms that they have a shot this season. It's a tall order against the Lakers, but everyone knew that building their rosters this season, and the Suns made the best move they could to make sure the Lakers have competition.

Josh made a few moves this off-season/season to help get them back into the thick of the championship race after a 37 (I think) win season, but I don't think any were as important as adding Ken Dirks.

Dirks is one of my favorite players in the league and is rewarding Josh with a 20-8 season while adding blocks and his usual good assist numbers (that 86 PAS rating).

And obviously they are in the driver's seat to win the Omega conference.

Magic got a couple young bigs that could turn into players or be traded again in the near future.

Since I don't have much else to say about the two trades above, both of which I loved, I'll dive into a deep cut for the Magic and Heat

Magic send: James Northrup, Albert Myers, and a 2054 Pacers First

For

Heat send: Tony Krebs, Ronald Ainsworth, Rex Milne, & 2055 Miami Heat First.

I love that the Heat started strong and pushed even harder to have the best season they could have. Meanwhile, the Magic quickly concluded this would not be a good season for them and sold pieces to a contender that hasn't really contended yet. The Magic were later able to cash for some points on Krebs and picked up what will likely be a solid 1st round pick when the Heat have to tear it all down next season. All in all a pretty equitable and slick move for both sides.

Bobcats Raptors

Frank Chavez

Jordan Poole looks like a pretty legit point guards and at the beginning of the season the raptors looked like they were putting together a strong playoff team. True point guards are hard to find in the league and the Raptors got their guy.

The Bobcats in full rebuild mode got two young prospects and really the basis for their entire rebuild. Glad to see they hung on to them and since they have time to rebuild the bobcats can wait for Banks and Chavez to fully develop.

I'll go Mavericks/Wizards. I think the trade has both short and long-term benefits that will set them up for future success.

The Mavs dipped below the tax apron without giving up any major assets other than the standard 10 points. It is always good when lottery teams avoid the tax. They desperately need whatever point totals they get to train their young players or buy talent so I'm glad they wont owe Uncle Sam any of their hard-earned points in a lost season. The Wiz used the 10 points to do a nice boost training for Remy Martin to prep for next season. The Wizards also found a new starting Center with Ronny Asher to finish the season. Don't look now but they are still in the playoff picture only a couple of games behind the Grizz/Raptors. And with Asher & Glynn the Wizards gained two valuable expiring contracts with full bird rights should he decide to go HAM in the offseason with S&T deals using those as bargaining chips since they are 10+ year vets. I know that is not Xist's GM style but I'd be salivating right now with those assets. My only critique was that LazyTitan didnt try and find a third team to send Rubio De La Rosa in exchange for a few more points. But since this trade was really last minute, it's hard to be picky.

Well this is an easy one for me. I think the AB Gates trade is trade of the year. The suns held out from last season's pressure to trade for AB when they couldn't afford to make the salaries work. By holding out, it allowed a trade to happen without having to match the salaries. The suns then went on to resign mahmoud with the max given them a complete roster with loads of talent everywhere. This trade was to make the push to win the title in the next 2-3 seasons with the core group of guys who are all locked in for at least 3 years.

The Celtics benefit from this trade was allowing AB to go seek another championship after his home team botched his repeat efforts. They got a future star in gates who is taking a while to develop because he was so raw. The purple potential jump ruined any chances of the suns training up some of the currents. Once gates is ready to play I think he's going to be a force on defense and still formidable on offense. Probably somewhere in the 19ppg 9rb 3 steals and forcing a ton of misses. I think people will struggle to score vs gates with his length size and athleticism. Celtics also got Behanan in the deal. End of the lottery pick who has upside to be a dual threat big man. He will score and he will block. Celtics could also reload him to get other pieces in the future(the likely scenario)

Suns/Celtics is the best trade

A former MVP on the move to solidify a contender will always grab headlines and they traded a player who has yet to appear in a game who's gonna be due for a max contract this offseason, it was good business all around for the Suns.
As for the Boston side they have a nice collection of impressive assets under-30 and they can either take it slow or get creative if someone big becomes available

Grizzlies/Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets avoided a big tax bill by sending Genaro Montoya away, but the Grizzlies were able to rally around their new star player and are close to finishing over .500 even though they have an outstanding tax bill from a few seasons ago.

Pistons/Magic:

Schiff was outstanding for the pistons before he got hurt. He was a top end center that was going to be an All Star and also get all league. For the Magic, while I am sure they did not want to let him go, the first round pick and JVG are great prospects to have on their roster.
