The Wizards Are Checked Out

Post by Xist2Inspire »

Hey.

So, a little quick background info: I generally have 3 settings: Checked In; Checked Out; and REALLY Checked Out, otherwise known as "Walking Husk." About 75% of the time I'm in some various state of Checked Out. 15% I'm Checked In. But that last 10%... that's where I'm at now.

Last season was a transition point, just a way to compete and pick up points. Despite Remy Martin struggling to adjust to his new surroundings, we were far better than expected, even making it to the second round. Daily, Nix, and Hamilton's options were picked up because the FA class wasn't worth clearing space. Still...that doesn't excuse what happened. Gregory Jackson, who never made peace with the fact that we acquired Remy, refused to take anything less than his desired contract, and held out until receiving a nice chunk of money to ride Johnny Davis' coattails in Denver. Alan Evers sensed the weird feeling swirling around the organization and signed for much less in the ATL. And Bojo - bless his heart - waited patiently for us to offer him a deal, but once it was clear that we weren't bring him back for an 11th season in DC, he signed with the defending champion Warriors in order to mentor Fabian Hub.

I say all that to say - the playoff streak probably ends this season. I don't think I have it in me this year to keep it going, let alone the personnel. I like Jae Wilcox, Chris Nunes, and Eddie Cruce, but headline acquisitions they aren't. I couldn't even be arsed to find a guy in the draft I liked enough to be excited about drafting, hence why Garret Mitchell isn't here anymore. Fortunately the books aren't cooked to the point where this becomes anything more than a speed bump, but yeah. Aside from Remy, this might not be a fun watch.

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: You've had an incredible streak of making the playoffs, which, if it ends, might not be matched ever. When you look back over the last 30 seasons, is there anything you would've done differently as a tactic to get more championships? Even at the expense of the streak?

Where do you see your team ending up in the divisional race?

How do you see yourself checking back in? Would it be for Remy or something more?
Somehow I manage.

I probably would've invested more in certain players. My erratic trainings probably kneecapped a lot of my guys over the years, and held them back from what they could've been. Marshall Starr, Antonio Moreno, Charles Bojorquez, Kendall Liberty...there was never one person that I invested fully in from the start, I always pulled back at some point or another. I've also bailed on a crap ton of young talent far earlier than I should've, Frank Daily and Ken Dirks chief among them.

Honestly, after taking a good look at everybody else? We may be able to fight for 4th place.

Y'know, I'm not quite sure. It's not that the game itself has gotten stale, it's that there's other things going on at the moment. I'm legitimately forgetting to keep up with league stuff. Hopefully next season will bring enough interesting things to claim space in my crowded mind.
