2037-2038 76ers Preseason Press Conference

Another season of SLOE is here

The 76ers had an interesting S47. Individually, Conrad McRae won the rebounding title and Obi Toppin garnered 6th Man of the Year honors, while Cassius Winston and James Wiseman continued to make strides in their development. Finally, we had some key contributions from wily veterans like Justin Rodriquez, Cliff Paugh, Damontas Sabonis, and hometown favorite Colin Smallwood to make some noise in the Alpha Conference.

While the squad did not live up to preseason hype and win the Mourning division, they finished 53-29 and earned the #5 seed, my personal best as a SLOE GM. In the 1st round, the 76ers faced the Denver Nuggets and managed to beat them in six games after John Stoll went down with an injury. The Sixers then squared off with the #1 Washington Wizards in the 2nd round, and got blown out in games 5 and 6 to lose 4-2. Congrats on going on to win the title, Xist!

RFA was no surprise - supermaxed Cassius Winston and matched an affordable Rockets' bid on Obi Toppin. With no cap space left, UFA was simply offering over two dozen vet min offers and picking up Wanderlei Silva, John Vines, Michael Hunt, Naz Reid, Andre Nickels, and Lorenzo Davis while retaining Damontas Sabonis and Brooks Thompson. The Sixers were an explosive offense last season but lacked defensive depth, especially in the trenches. Hopefully these UFA acquisitions can create more balance for the team this season.

Finally, TC was an almost complete disaster. Almost because while Cassius Winston had another monster camp, everyone else forgot to show up. James Wiseman took a hit but was restored. And then Obi. Poor Obi, got annihilated across the board and finished with a bottom-five overall score at the tender age of 25. Definitely a buzzkill, but not the end of the world.

All in all, despite the slight TC setback I think the 76ers have plenty of talent across the lineup and fans should be excited about the upcoming season. Expect the 76ers to make the playoffs and compete for a conference title this season and beyond.

If not, I promise there will be a major shakeup coming.

Any questions?

What would need to happen for your team to decide to shake things up, either in a rebuild or adding talent? What's missing from this team that you feel you need to compete against the Bucks and Magic for the division, and potentially the Wizards for the conference?

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: If Sim Vegas had the over/under on total wins at 53.5 this season, would you take the over or under...and why?

If the team sputters before day 60 or we suffer another major injury, I would shake things up via trade. I'd try to add talent before selling my win-now guys but I'd stay flexible and see where the league is at during that time.

In terms of what is missing right now to compete in the conference, I would really like another wing scorer, à la Cliff Paugh from last season. I declined Paugh's option because I thought his level of play had dropped too much to justify exercising it; I figured during offseason I could acquire another piece, especially before RFA, but the market was drier than I expected.

As the team is currently constructed, I'd say under. I think about 48 wins is attainable right now. While the team is a bit deeper in the frontcourt, I think the perimeter scoring will take a dip too and that will cost me a few games here and there, particularly against other high-scoring teams in the league.

This is happening if I do a Sim Vegas this year now!

Chet Youbetcha, Dimmadome News: With a very competitive division, do you see the race for your division being the hardest in the league? Who do you think comes out on top, and why is it the Knicks?

While much is to be made about Obi's disappointing TC, you currently have 5 guys on your roster 7'0 or higher... How are you going to dispense those minutes out and make sure everyone gets a fair set of time and not just filling a seat on the bench?

Still defer to the Johnson division as being the toughest in SLOE, but I think it is close

In terms of the Mourning division, I see it finishing

1. Bucks
2. Magic
3. 76ers
4. Nets
5. Knicks
6. Cavs

Wiseman will see starter minutes as a SF/PF hybrid. McRae will see starter minutes in the post and Smallwood, Naz Reid, and Sabonis will provide some relief to the bigs. I could see the trio logging 10-12 min each off the bench to start the season.

Having watched Todd divebomb one TC and recover the next, I hope you have little to worry about Toppin’s future!

You still have lots of top tier talent despite the rough TC. Where does Rodriquez figure into the mix this year?

Thanks man, here's to hoping Obi rebounds next season. I got faith he has done it once already.

Rodriquez is still the focal point of the offense. His athleticism is starting to wane so the efficiency will be affected, but he is still a capable offensive threat, particularly from 3. I see him filling the SG/SF role again depending on the matchup and will still rely on his defense to guard the opponent's best perimeter threat like he did last year in the playoffs vs Ironside and Kidd

During RFA, did you offer Toppin the max or were you willing to let the market set the price?

Didn't offer a max - my offer was in the $100M/4 range so when I got yours at $125M/4 it was an easy pill to swallow, hence the quick match

If you had maxed him or came close to doing so - I'd have given a S&T at least a look

Will we see some day 60 moves from your team? Is Obi in the doghouse for not taking TC seriously? Is he on a short leash?

Are you worried about Cliff Paugh sharing top secret stuff with the present Division leading Milwaukee Bucks?
