2001-02 Timberwolves Press Conference

The JNR: Welcome, friends, to Minneapolis. Be sure to grab your Timberwolves-themed fleece by the door. It’s got a picture of Raja’s face!

The JNR: Our season went better than most expected. After parting with Grant Hill and signing Jim Jackson, we pulled off a great trade to land Tom Gugliotta and form a trio of dominant players in Jackson, Gugliotta, and Webber. After signing Pooh Richardson mid-season to help guide the team, we ended up securing the 4th seed and improbably ending up in the Western Conference Finals. We lost to the Warriors for what seems like the 40th goddamn time, but for a team that had little expectations, we did pretty well.

This offseason has not been largely successful for us. We were able to grab a lot of depth that we think will be important going forward, and we are proud of signing Chris Smith, who will hold the starting PG spot quite comfortably – unless we need to move Tom there for playoff matchups, of course.

The biggest story of the offseason to us is Raja Bell’s continued development. He is dedicated to being not just a complementary piece to our trio of stars, but to join them in a Four Musketeers type way. He is actually at the gym training as we speak. We’re all excited for the new season, but Raja especially is pumped up. Look at your fleeces to see what I mean!

This is now Webber’s 9th season in Minnesota. We’ve had ups and downs, trade blocks and title hopes. And through it all, he’s been the consummate professional. We’d love to reward that with a title and a big fat contract at the end of the year. He’ll have at least one of those guaranteed, and hopefully both.

Over this offseason, it has come to our attention that people question our decision to draft Chris with the first pick of the draft, seeing that #2 pick Anfernee Hardaway just lifted his third PBSL Championship trophy. Make no mistake, we don’t regret our decision for a second. Chris has been an institution here, and we wouldn’t have done anything different along the way.

We now open up the floor for questions.

Will Maukie, BucksNation.com: Where do you believe you will fall in the Midwest this season? Is the division crown yours for the taking? Or do you think it still belongs to the Mavericks?

JNR: With our three stars and the emerging Bell, we believe we are a threat to the division. However, the West is unprecedentedly strong. There is only one team in my estimation that has zero chance to contend for the playoffs. All others have a legitimate shot. It really comes down to gameplan and coaching, and we believe we are skilled at both.

Random Reporter: Who will be running the point for you now that Mookie Blaylock has moved on? Will it be another "by committee" effort?

JNR: As I said, Chris Smith seems the likeliest candidate to run the point. We don't expect a ton from our starting PG: we just want someone who can pass the ball, avoid turnovers, and stay in front of his man. Of all of our options, Smith fits best.

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: Are you concerned that the great legacies of Gugs career and Jim Jacksons to a degree may finally be slowing down or coming to an end?

They're 32 and 31. It's obvious their best days are behind them. However, that doesn't mean they still can't contribute at a championship level. We still have a team that can contend, and if we get where we want to be, you better believe it's because Jim and Tom are behind the wheel.

Bulls Beat Reporter : You made some serious noise last year after the Gugs trade. With both Gugs and Jackson at 31 years old and only 2-3 years on their contracts respectively do you feel you have enough to make a championship run in that window? If so, do you feel there are any immediate needs for your team to get you there?

Which team would that be?
