Buying A Team With $15

Being the All Star sim, I wanted to try something to spice up the mid season a little bit. As an avid reader of B/R and social media, Ive always enjoyed when they throw a list of players up and you have to make the best team possible. With that being said, I would like to do a similar list with PBSL players based on this years stats to see what people might consider as the best starting 5 this year so far. So the idea is pretty simple, you get $15 to spend on the best starting 5 possible. You need to pick two/three guards, two/three forwards, and one center. The players will be broken down into tiers, $1 to $5, based entirely off my opinion (its kinda like whose line is it anyway style.) I took into account a variety of things, so you might see players I consider stat suffers lower on the list. So if you pick two players from the $5 bracket, you only have $5 left to spend across the other three positions. Now, I will say my science is not exact on picking who is in what tier, its just me looking at the site and thinking who falls where. So if you have a problem with my tiers, I do not care, enjoy paying $3 for a player you think should be $5.
$5
Bryce Dejan Jones (Guard)
Pete Maravich (Guard)
Boban Marjanovic (Forward)
RJ Barrett (Forward)
Ernest Long (Center)
$4
Silky Johnson (Guard)
Jerry West (Guard)
Josh Jackson (Forward)
Bjorn Ironside (Forward)
Domantas Sabonis (Center)
$3
De'Aronn Fox (Guard)
Grayson Allen (Guard)
Simon Pheonix (Forward)
Wanderlei Silva (Forward)
Erik Haynes (Center)
$2
Ja Morant (Guard)
David Leiker (Guard)
Marvin Bagley III (Forward)
Bronny James (Forward)
Jaren Jackson Jr (Center)
$1
World B Free (Guard)
Romeo Langford (Guard)
James Kirkendall (Forward)
Mo Bamba (Forward)
Alton Hill (Center)
My picks would be:
Boban Marjanovic (Forward) ($5) - Still to me is one of the best players in the game. Somehow is destroying the leauge and leading the points even when he took a hit in TC. It looks like my under the radar move is living up to his calling. I thought about RJ for a minute, but I feel that RJ has the luxury of having Ironside and Long next to him. Where, while Boban does have a solid supporting cast, he is clearly the alpha of his team.
Josh Jackson (Forward) ($4) - What better compliment to Boban than to put his old running mate JJ with him. I have been very fortunate to have JJ on my team this year. He has been killing it since leaving the Magic and his overall versatility would be a huge thing for this team.
Jerry West (Guard) ($4) - I was torn on taking Jerry West or De'Arron fox here. I have always really enjoyed West game so he gets the nod for me here. He is a player that can play either guard spot, can score a bunch, can lock down a player on the perimeter and can also get crazy assists at the point.
Romeo Langford (Guard) /Alton Hill (Center) ($1 each): So I left myself without much choices for my last two players. Only having $2 left, I just had to choose between Langford with his out of nowhere 26.7 ppg or World B Free's 9.3 assists and 1.9 steals. I like what he has been doing this year, but I feel like at 45.1 mins per game, he is in the middle of stat stuffing minute overload city. So Langford is my guy, also shooting .444 on the year from 3PS and a .541 FG% will be a nice touch on this team. Finally Hill will be a great player down in the middle as well. He has an insane .943 FT% right now and is almost a reb away from averaging a double double. His 0 quickness might be a hinderance to a degree but I will happily trade that off for his production this season so far.
Comment below with your $15 team and why you would pick them and maybe we might just see one of those lineups in the ASG or All Leauge Teams!

PG - $3 - D'Aaron Fox - Firstly, it's insane he's in the $3 band under a guy like Silky Johnson. If Silky is $3 and Fox is $4, I'll take the free $1, but Fox's 27.6/6.3/8.9 line on 53%/90%/39% shooting is outstanding in addition to 2.4spg and plus defense. Compared to 'just' 16.3/5.8/10.6 line on 45/65/38% shooting line.
SG - $4 - Jerry West - Do I really need to elaborate here?
SF - $4 - Bjorn Ironside - I had Grayson Allen written here, but ended up with an extra $1, so I made the upgrade. Bjorn's total stats are similar to Grayson's, but he does it much more efficiently. Being able to put up a huge stat line without chucking up as many shots as possible is going to be critical on a team this stacked. Bjorn isn't as good against a masher at SF as Grayson would be, but with the front-court I've assembled, I don't think that's going to be an issue.
PF - $3 - Wanderlei Silva - On a team with excellent scoring, you need a guy who can not only score, but play LOCK DOWN DEFENSE at a front-court position. In addition to his efficient 25ppg, he pulls down 10 boards (A's in both REB attributes), has 100 in BLK, B's in both Defense (so he can play against power & stretch 4's), and a 58 STL rating, cuz why not?
C - $1 - Alton Hill - A. You have to go cheap at at least ONE position, and how about Center, where there aren't any absolutely dominant guys (Sorry, Ernest, Erik, and Domantas), but lots of pretty good ones? This team is going to have plenty of offensive firepower, and Alton doesn't shoot as much as some of his counterparts on this list (a good thing on a team this stacked). He's a fine Center who does normal Center things, plus he makes his free throws.
I'd put this team up against any y'all can come up with. But try me!

The foundation of this team is built around the ability to play and guard multiple positions, players who are more than willing rebounders, precision shooting from beyond the arc, and rim protection.
$5 - RJ Barrett - Ron Artest 2.0. Seriously, go back and look at Ron Artest in his prime (see:
http://pbsl.ijbl.net/2008/players/player416.htm), and then come back and look at RJ Barrett. He does everything Artest did, but BETTER. And Artest was considered one of the all-time greats in SLOE history. I traded RJ away to win a championship because he was 4 years away from being a boss, and I did win that championship... but if I had the patience, who knows where my team would be right now. Barrett brings so much to the table and can play Power Forward, Small Forward, or Shooting Guard even. In this offense though, his primary position would be Power Forward, due to his prowess at rebounding and post defense. He's one of the top shot blockers in the league despite his height, and would create constant mismatches against other PFs due to his ability to stretch the floor and elite quickness for his size.
$4 - Josh Jackson - Like Barrett, Josh Jackson does EVERYTHING... except where Barrett lacked in handles/passing Jackson is adverse to offensive rebounding. Jackson would line up as a Small Forward for this line-up, but like Barrett, could play anywhere from Power Forward to even Point Guard. The Perimeter would be locked down on his watch, and good luck shooting over him without the fear of getting that shit swatted. Offensively, it's not crazy to think that Josh may be more offensively gifted than Barrett, but his willingness to pass and defer to a teammate who has a better look always gave him lower point outputs than most would expect from someone of his elite skillset. Even at 4 dollars, Josh Jackson is one of the bigger steals in this fun exercise.
$3 - De'Aaron Fox - Despite our falling out, this Guard slash Forward is one of the top offensive weapons in this game. At $3, it's a no brainer that you got to take him as part of your roster. A great passer with below average handles always meant more turnovers than desired when used as a primary ball-handler, but surrounding him with other good passers will hopefully lessen the turnover totals. In this offense, he would be playing the shooting guard role, off-ball so that he can do a little more without the pressure of running an offense through him. On the defensive side of the ball, Fox is going to harass smaller guards and bigger guards alike using his quickness and active hands to create numerous turnovers a game.
$2 - David Leiker - As you could see from the other players discussed before, I would actually consider letting Leiker run the point on this team. He's got superior handles to De'Aaron Fox, which allows Fox to be more aggressive off-ball. With Jackson, Fox, and Barrett all able to generate or snipe from deep, the spacing will be there for this team to allow Leiker to feast from mid-range and the paint. His ability to draw contact and get those foul calls will only help as defenders will be forced to sag off OR double team, leaving one of those other 3 offensive studs open for a more-than-likely easy bucket. Defensively, I don't think there is a better defender you can put by Fox and Jackson on the perimeter. Good luck to any guard or wing who tries to penetrate this defense from the field.
$1 - Alton Hill - Only got $1 left, and while he's "bargain bin" you are getting way more bang for your buck (literally) when taking Alton Hill. I actually didn't know much about him outside of his name. I always thought he was worse than his ratings were... but then he must've gotten a TC boost at some point, because this guy is pretty legit. He rebounds, defends, and protects the rim, all the things you want out of a big man. One underrated part of his game... he's an ELITE free throw shooter. He leads the league in Free Throw percentage, shooting 94% from the clip. That's ridiculous for a 7-foot big man. He does lack the lateral quickness that you would like to see with a team this freakishly athletic, but honestly, you aren't asking him to do much outside of cleaning up the glass and playing a little defense. Even then, if he struggles, he's surrounded buy forwards and guards who all can contribute where he lacks.

I'm filling this out in part because it's a fun idea, but I'm also filling it out in hopes that the comments get points, too. I see this like a 5 on 5. If we're asked to do the same amount of work as the original article, shall we not be compensated as well? Anyway, here are my picks with the reasoning behind them:
CENTER: Jaren Jackson, Jr. - $2
I like Jaren Jackson, Jr. a lot better than Alton Hill, and Center is the one spot where I felt like I didn't need to break the bank. What I look for in a C is a strong guy who can rebound, post defend, and block. Throw in 100 INS, and that's a nice little bonus. JJJ does it all. He fouls a little bit, but I feel like on a superteam, where he has help at the PF spot, it wouldn't be that much of a nuisance since he would have help.
POWER FORWARD: Wanderlei Silva - $3
I had Wanderlei Silva on my team for years, and the reigning Finals MVP is a steal at $3. Paired with JJJ, I'd have two bigs who could make a lot of noise in the paint on both sides of the court while pulling down a lot of boards. After using only 33% of my budget on 40% of the players, I feel like I have as solid a frontcourt as I'd need, and I'd be able to go with three guys listed as guards to spend the other 66.6 percent.
SMALL FORWARD: Grayson Allen - $3
While he's listed as a guard, the rules said I could take three guards. I'd play Allen as SF because he's probably much better suited at the 3 or 4. His perimeter defense is kind of weak, but that's his only flaw. He can create his own shot, hit the three, and is just a tremendously versatile player to have on your team.
SHOOTING GUARD: De'Aaron Fox - $3
As Ryan already mentioned, Fox at $3 is a damn steal. I can't really think of any solid justification not to have him on your team at $3 unless you just traded him out and don't want to be reminded of his incredible prowess. He's a consistent scoring machine who plays incredible defense to boot.
POINT GUARD: Silky Johnson - $4
As much as I wanted to spring for guys like Josh Jackson and BDJ, I felt like SF and PG were two areas where the cheaper options were closer to being serviceable than dropping down from Wanderlei, Triple J, or De'Aaron Fox. Ryan said he'd rather have Fox than Silky...I say...WHY NOT BOTH? Of course he's going to pick his guy in West, and I'm going to pick mine in Silky. True, Silky isn't Mr. Bucket, but with 4 other guys on the team and a combined 397 in INS, I'd rather have a guy who can distribute the ball to the right guys and play lockdown, double 100 defense (PRD & STL).
Anyway, that should be about 3,003 words in case it saves you from counting all the words individually.

fun idea AB -
Center - Haynes ($3)
Forward - Pheonix ($3)
Forward - Boban ($5)
Guard - Langford ($1)
Guard - Fox ($3)
Langford and Boban do the heavy-lifting on the offensive end with Fox facilitating. Good luck scoring/getting offensive rebounds with Pheonix and Haynes guarding the paint.
------------------- shameless edit for points --------------------------------------
Erik Haynes – Father Time has been kind to the defensive wunderkind turned saavy maestro. The PBSL Sultan of Swat is averaging 4.7 blocks per game at 34 years young. Anchoring the frontcourt with Mo Bamba in the Dirty South, Haynes is not showing any signs of slowing down in what has been a Hall of Fame worthy career. He is a walking double-double and an easy bargain pick to anchor this hypothetical frontcourt.
Simon Pheonix – Much like Haynes, I wanted another veteran mauler on the glass to support the frontcourt. If Haynes somehow misses a rebound, Pheonix will be there to grab it. Pheonix is leading the league in rebounding at 11.4 per game (Haynes is 2nd btw) so if you miss a shot in the post, you are not definitely not getting an offensive rebound with these two patrolling the paint.
Boban Marjanovic – I made fun of Boban in the preseason for falling off the purple pedestal. I was wrong. So very wrong. Boban might be donning blue this season, but he is well on his way to his 3rd MVP award. He is averaging a career-best (and absurd) 30.9 points per game, leading the suddenly surging Clippers in the Omega Conference. Go ahead and try to guard him, he is hitting shots at career-high from the field this year. Did I mention he just turned 30 years old? Yeah, he is so far living up to the mega, supermax extension and is definitely worthy of a $5 bid. Excuse me while I eat crow.
Romeo Langford – My surprise pick for this pick’em team is the quiet assassin from New Orleans. A straight-up sniper, Langford has been the lone bright spot in what has been a disappointing season for the Pelicans. Fresh off a new contract, Langford has not missed a beat averaging a career-best 25 points a game this year. When this all-star team needs points in bunches and opponents are double-teaming Boban – Romeo will be wide open, spotting up and hitting jumpshot after jumpshot, time and time again. When are teams going to learn? You need to guard this guy.
De’Aaron Fox – My preseason pick for MVP surprisingly changed addresses this year moving to the Desert back in December. While he will not be the MVP on the lowly Suns, Fox is proving that he will still be a prized target in the 2034 UFA class. An outstanding scorer and a lockdown defender, he is an absolute steal at $3 who will shut Pistol Pete down in their fictional head-to-head matchup. Sorry Angry Banana – Fox is still my guy to lead the backcourt.
