I had no intentions of contending for at least 2-3 seasons. This was supposed to be a long rebuild the right way. I also was banking all of that on landing Pau Gasol. I had what I thought was a close to done deal with the 76ers GM for the #1 pick which would have guaranteed us Pau. But unfortunately when Philly has 2 deals to pick from it chooses the lesser of the two and doesn't like responding to phone calls and voicemails. Sooooo we had to settle with getting the #3 pick instead to go along with #2. We did NOT like Arenas. We did however think this draft was a top heavy draft, consisting of Pau and Gilbert. But Arenas was not someone we wanted to build our franchise around. Anyone who knows anything about my GMing style knows that I like a PG with D and good handles and court vision.LoCo89 wrote:Jean Baptiste Étienne, of La Révolution de Vancouver (Memphis Branch) newspaper. One of the more fascinating nights this offseason was draft night. Take us back to the draft, you had prime position for a rebuild with 2 of the first 3 picks in the draft (and potentially the first two picks instead if the rumors were true), but the direction you've taken is a 180 from that stance. Was the plan always to take the picks and flip them into better assets (a great plan in its own right) or was there supposed to be something different?

I would say slightly. He definitely lost some significant hops in the off-season. But he's still strong as an ox so I think he'll be fine. He's quicker than Marcus at the moment so Zo will be playing the 4 to start the season and the foreseeable future. Now come playoff time, I'll mix those guys up wherever the matchup leads them. What I do love I'd that his stamina held strong. Which will help when we hire Mike D'antoni.ballsohard wrote:Bob Hope, 'The Price is wrong Bitch, times', Are you worried about Alonzo Mourning's effectiveness as a player now that he's past the hard line of 31 years old? Do you plan to slot Zo or Camby at the 4 ?
Of course it was difficult. Especially seeing how the team has performed so poorly after I set it up to be a contender for the next 4-7 seasons. But sometimes you can't think about yourself, and the best interest of the franchise and the league needs to come first. That's where the decision came from and I think I made the right decision still. I'm back, I had a new challenge in reviving what was a shit hole of a team in Seattle. I am very much so enjoying that challenge. I may never win another ring, who knows. But that's the goal, and I wouldn't change a thing.NickMalone77 wrote:Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: Was it difficult leaving a group like the Mavericks a team you helped establish into a power house or was it time for a change?
How soon? - Never know, it's always very fluid.kucoach7 wrote:Nathan Sliver, sevenfortyseven.com: How soon will you be shipping off Zo by ripping off some innocent GM who will give you young talent for him right before he takes a serious dive?
Of course Penny was a PG you silly guy.WigNosy wrote:If you like a PG with D and handles, should we expect you to move on Eric Snow? Also, does that mean Penny was a PG in Dallas?
I am very excited about Marcus. He will be the defensive anchor at the center position. I don't see him being an offensive key player, but he will be our defensive key player. Our defense will go as he goes. I have a very different offense I plan on running. I'm excited to try it and Camby and the rest of the guys are excited about as well. Our practices have been amazing and I can't wait to get these guys on the court for games that matter.NOLa. wrote:What role do you see one of my favorites, Marcus Camby, playing on your team? Is he a potential key player option, or will you let him focus more on defense and cleaning the boards?
Good question...I don't exactly have a firm answer though. As of right now, his minutes in my offense will be very very limited. In his old age, let's just say he's had some problems keeping up. But I will say that the knowledge and veteran leadership he's provided, for mainly Jalen, has been outstanding. So he's definitely earning his money.logpmess wrote:You have all time great Michael Jordan on your team. Well you baby back bitch, it's not an easy task. It's all about assets. The more assets, the more options. I do my best to get the most out of my assets. I am a bit impatient as well, so the long term plan I had to rebuild was probably a foolish one. I'd have never seen that to fruition. I'm too impatient. So here we are. Think you can win the shittiest division ever, you baby back bitch?coltsguy510 wrote:Despite the awful team you inherited, you have quickly turned it into a legitimate contender. How does a baby back bitch like you do it?
I think I've fared pretty well so far. I didn't get the min level free agents I would have liked but that what's happens when you have 3 max players. Hopefully that salary will translate on the court. That's all you can hope for. We think we have a great game plan ready, but until the season starts it's a big unknown. We're happy though with what we've been able to build in such a short time.RPF wrote:How do you think the Sonics have fared in the Western Conference arms race?
It would have been very hard to do a slow rebuild. That was the plan of course. But I have to love my players. I didn't love Gilbert and it changed my entire mindset. So I decided to do what I enjoy the most, and that's compete.78# wrote:You go away for a few seasons, then come back and take over the worst team in the league. After having the success you had previously before leaving, how hard would it have been to do a slow rebuild? Did that play any part in making the big trades?
How excited are you to see your defense with a frontcourt like Zo and Camby?
