Top 5 Draft Pick Team Analysis

1. Seattle Supersonics (5-77)
Key Players: Michael Redd, Chris Mihm
Needs: Starting PG, Starting SG, Starting PF, Starting C, Backup PG, Backup SG, Backup SF, Backup PF, Backup C
Current Projected Player: Gilbert Arenas - PG
Michael Redd is a stud on offense. He is a player to start a build around. This team has two real options that I can see for this pick: Gilbert Arenas or Pau Gasol. Gilbert Arenas gives the team a score first point guard that will boost the offensive side of the ball. Pau Gasol gives the team an efficient offensive player that has some attributes in rebounding and defense to improve this team. This is a coin flip decision that ultimately will be determined by the way the GM likes to rebuild.
My projected pick: Pau Gasol - PF
2. New York Knicks (12-70)
Key Players: Jason Terry, Aaron McKie
Needs: Starting SF, Starting PF, Starting C, Backup SG, Backup SF, Backup PF, Backup C
Current Projected Player: Jason Richardson – SG
This team is building around Jason Terry. Aaron McKie, although a good player, is not a player I see as part of the rebuild package. This team has the decision to make about whether to draft the best available player or pick a player above their worth. I could see them drafting Tyson Chandler or Richard Jefferson to sure up starters for the future. The other option is to draft Gilbert Arenas and pair him next to Jason Terry for the future. This move would probably include a shift of McKie to SF.
My projected pick: Gilbert Arenas – PG
3. Detroit Pistons (20-62)
Key Players: James Posey, Al Harrington
Needs: Starting PG, Starting SG, Starting PF, Starting C, Backup PG, Backup SF, Backup PF
Current Projected Player: Pau Gasol - PF
Pau Gasol would have been ideal for this team. To set him next to Harrington and Posey would have been one hell of a start to a team going forward. With my projection of Pau being gone by this point, this team will look to add a guard to the fold. The options I see are big bodied Joe Johnson at SG, slightly better defense and rebounder Jason Richardson SG, or the facilitator and possible scorer Tony Parker at PG. Tony Parker has the possibility to be a top point guard similar to a Nick Van Exel.
My Projected Pick: Tony Parker – PG
4. Orlando Magic (21-61)
Key Players: Mike Miller, Damon Jones
Needs: Starting SF, Starting PF, Starting C, Backup PG, Backup SG, Backup PF, Backup C
Current Projected Pick: Richard Jefferson – SF
This team has a solid guard situation for the future. With needs at every other position, this draft is not ideal for this team. They have the option to get a starting SF with Richard Jefferson or a starting defensive stalwart at C in Tyson Chandler. With Next years draft being deeper in big men and the other three picks this draft projected at PF/C, I see the team taking their SF of the future.
My projected pick: Richard Jefferson – SF
5. Philidelphia 76ers (29-53)
Key Players: Richard Hamilton, Anthony Peeler, Bobby Phyllis
Needs: Starting PF, Starting C, Backup PG, Backup SG, Backup PF
Current Projected Pick: Joe Johnson – SG
This team’s main goal this offseason will probably to bring back Bobby Jackson and sure up his position as starting PG and slide Bobby Phyllis to backup PG. With the next projected big man being Troy Murphy, who is an outside first PF, I see the team suring up the SG spot for the future. This draft will allow this team to have the future built around PG Jackson, SG selected draft pick, SF Richard Hamilton. The two options are Jason Richardson and Joe Johnson. I think the more well rounded defensive player of Jason Richardson will be a better fit for this team.
My projected pick: Jason Richardson - SG
