From the desk of Garfield B. Ageman, Esq
My dearest PBSL,
At the dawn of a new season sunlight stretches its hopeful fingers to animate every flower, to wake life itself from its wintry slumber, and here we find ourselves again, awake where we, somniferous, fell.
O' young James! We have chosen you, but nary a uniform you will see until 2024, mayhaps, whence your current rating bears the vibrant yellow of a ripened banana. For the season nigh, you are but a squire and must fill thineself with the tutelage of men, big and wise.
Through RFA we waited, jaws agape at the ransoms so carelessly tost as if the weight of coin was that of a feather. Mere one-way players aswim in maximum bounties, awarded treasures which mere fan can only approximate in the foolish exercise of imagination. Jaylen Brown's PER last year was 17.3, and he can't play defense. May those who wanton waste their coin suffer through the perils of tax season, when the miserly hands of King Scott and his accountants ascend on down from high to stuff their pockets fat.
O' sweet Russell, whose loyalty never falters, even at a lower contract, even on the trade block for the Bulls. We have hoisted the hardware for your labors. O' old James, you have returned to the kingdom from which you were drafted, and we will try to play you at Small Forward. O' Kenneth, whom they call Manimal, will you grab more boards? Who will back you up when you foul? Byron Odell, you say? Tall and slender and adept at free throws. We shan't underutilize you as the rubes in Dallas have.
And o' determined Leroy. You, who only misses 100% of the shots you don't take, so you take as many as you can. You have steeled yourself to become better, and your hard work and dedication will be rewarded. Not with a starting spot, nay, unless we can find a proper suiter for Russell Westbrook, but with more minutes off of the bench and a good feeling about your RFA contract in two years. May it not taint you with unhappiness that loyal Russell will still hoist seniority and leadership over you for at least one more year. If it is any consolation, we will key you.
It looks to be another long and brutal year for us. We will have to scratch and claw to make the playoffs. And once there, we will likely be massive underdogs. But under this dog, fierce balls dangle...balls full of spirit and energy and all of the virtues espoused by briefly popular Big Dog Brand T-shirts and probably dog Jazz for all of you literalists out there.
For now, I await your response before the season so that I may answer your queries before we wage into battle.
Yours,
Garfield B. Ageman

Do you think the Bulls have a roster that can compete for a division title?

I'm not even sure what the plan for this year is. It really depends on the market. We put some of our best players on the block last year, but didn't get anything that excited us too much about the future in return. If that happens this year, we could see a reset starting mid-year, or we could just continue to vie for a low playoff spot and be competitive.
With Leroy Haugh's improvements in training camp, we do feel like he's going to be a strong offensive weapon for us going forward, and we liked that we saw some defensive gains from him, too. That could play a big factor in our trade decisions.

To elaborate, I'd be really surprised if we won the division. Right now, we're just hoping that we make the playoffs. The Eastern Conference is a much stronger conference than the West, and there are probably 11 or 12 teams in the East who would make the playoffs if they moved West. I'd wager that two Eastern teams with .500 or better records will also have lotto picks.

GWR: How do you think Leroy Haugh will respond to being benched in favor of a player who may not be as good as Leroy currently is?

We're talking about Russell Westbrook, here. He may not be in his prime, but he can still do pretty much everything we expect from him pretty well. We still think Russ is one of the best players in the league, let alone on the team, but I suppose there are worse problems to have.

Any truth to Vernon Desantis consistently being shopped? Does no one want VD?

There's truth to it. It's not that nobody wants VD, it's that we're very particular in what we'd want back for him. We had one team come close with an offer last year, but we were on the fence about the offer, and I fell on the side of holding onto VD. We understand Desantis' value and are happy to keep him if an offer doesn't steal our hearts, but we also realize that we're not a favorite to win a championship right now, and we don't have a wealth of prospects, which means we'll have an expensive decision to make this offseason if we keep Vernon around.

Mostly from being bored of having to do a Preseason Presser every couple months and they're all pretty much the same. I wanted to do something that was both different and wouldn't take any extra time to bullshit out, so glad you liked it. That's worth a slight brightening of my day.

Byron Odell was the surprise of the preseason. Will he continue to get minutes in your rotation this year?

Unlike in years past, I took a hands on approach to setting my depth chart in the preseason. We like Odell, and we feel like the Mavs didn't utilize him to his full potential. We saw what Odell could do with the Wizards several seasons back as an athletic 7 footer who can make free throws at a Gary-esque pace, and we think he can be a great 2nd unit contributor.

If you had to pick one, what is the most important single attribute or skill of any lone player on your team?

How many years do you expect to have to deal with Anthony Davis? If Kevin Love is the comparison, he was going strong at the age of 34 or 35.

It's 2023, so it might be recreationally legal in Illinois by now, and if so, then yes. However, we feel the Bulls are always enjoyable to watch as evidenced by our fan loyalty going from POOR to FAIR.
