2000-01 PBSL Hall of Fame Nominations

Welcome to the first call for nominees to the People’s Basketball Sim League Hall of Fame. The rules are simple. Nominate a player you think deserves to be mentioned among the greatest players to play in this league. Championships, all-star appearances, funny picture blogs: all of these things could mean enough to warrant a nomination. Each GM is allowed 1 (ONE) nomination. There’s only one requirement: the player has to be retired from the PBSL. There is no time restriction on retirement – as soon as a player retires, they are eligible for the HOF.

So what’s to stop you from just sending Alaa Abdelnaby to the Hall of Fame because you like his name? Well, first of all, he’s not retired yet, so you’re clearly not paying attention. But what else is going to stop you? We are.

Our HOF committee – WigNosy, RPF, Conroy, and JNR – will review the nominations and put out a ballot of those we think qualify to be elected to the Hall. And then you vote on those players to see if they get enshrined.

-Nominees on the ballot with over 75% yes votes get into the HOF
-Nominees on the ballot with over 50% yes votes (but under 75%) are automatically considered for next year's ballot ("free" nomination that doesn't cost any owner a yearly nomination).

Nominations open now and will stay open until the end of the regular season. The ballot will be released after the first round of the playoffs. Reply to this post with your nomination.

Nominee: Magic Johnson

Magic was 30 years old at the time of the dispersal draft, which meant from the get-go, Training Camp would be his number one enemy. He opened his PBSL career with averages of 23.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg, and 9.2 apg on the slow-it-down, grind-it-out "Oldlanta Hawks" squads, leading them to the first two PBSL titles and picking up Playoff MVP honors both years. He represented Atlanta three times in the All-Star game (traded immediately after the 1992 all-star game to the Magic) and was an All-League player those first three seasons.

After being traded to the Magic, he helped power them to a 57-25 record (and the Atlantic division title) before the Celtics' dominant big man, Alonzo Mourning, knocked them out of the playoffs in the second round to start the 1990s Boston dynasty in the East.

The following year, he was dealt to Toronto, where he helped the Raptors to back-to-back 51-win seasons (falling just short of the Pistons for the division title both years). Both seasons, the Raptors fell in the playoffs to... you guessed, it, the Celtics. It seems somewhat appropriate that his biggest rival in the PBSL was the Celtics.

In 1995, he was dealt to the Mavericks, who won the Midwest division as Magic was moved to Small Forward and for the first time in his career, started to come off the bench (at age 35, you can understand this) but still played significant minutes. It was here that he worked with his heir apparent, Penny Hardaway. The Mavericks went to the conference finals only to lose to dominant big man Shawn Kemp.

He signed with the Pistons to go home to Michigan in the off-season of 1996 as a backup for Steve Smith, but the Pistons dealt him to Utah midway through the season where he was cast as a starter on a very bad team. He enjoyed a bit of a renaissance in Utah, putting up career-high three-point percentages and hitting his highest field goal percentage since his time in Atlanta, but the writing was on the wall.

An attempt to chase a championship ring as a bit player with the Kings was unsuccessful in the 1997-98 season (the Kings lost to the eventual champion Mavericks), but he signed on to a Golden State Warrior team in 1998 that won another title, giving him a third PBSL ring.

On top of the PBSL world one final time, he elected to retire from the league the same way he came in... as a champion.

My nominee is Chris Mullin.

RESUME:
4 All Star Appearances
2 All League 2nd Team
2 Championships (one as a starter, one as a role player)
Slam Dunk Champion

Mullin started off PBSL as a premier scorer, finishing Top 10 in scoring for 3 straight years as a member of the Chicago Bulls. Mullin was 27 when PBSL started, so he didn't have many years of his prime before the decline began. Still, he had 5 years of over 20ppg, and ended his career in strong fashion, earning two rings with the Dallas Mavericks. Although the last ring he only averaged 15 minutes a game, he was a starter for most of the first championship run and averaged 12ppg on 43% three point shooting. Like most veterans in this game, he slowly faded away as a member of the Denver Nuggets. But his prime should be taken into account here. Mullin was one of the best players in the league when it first began, and that deserves recognition.

Chris Mullin for HOF
