All Star Factoids

So with all-star weekend having come and gone, I thought it might be interesting to look at some all-star factoids now that we have put 30 all star games into the books.

The West currently leads the series, 16 wins to 14 wins and leads the all-time collective score by a margin of 31 points - 4,356 points to 4,325 points.

The longest winning streak for either side has been 5 years - the West pulled this off from 1990-1994 and the East didn't match it until 2011-2015.

The East has won 7 of the last 9 contests - so while everyone talks about all the beasts in the East this year, it wasn't always like that!

The all-star game is seldom close - the average score of an all-star game is 153 to 136.

The lowest winning score came in 2001 when the East prevailed 128-120. The lowest losing score turned up in 1997 when the West beat the East 137-106.

The highest winning and losing score both occurred in the very first PBSL all-star game in 1990 when the West won the game 174 to 170.

The game with the tightest margin was in 2007 when the West prevailed 153-152. The biggest blowout occurred in 1996 when the West obliterated the East 154 to 117.

Power Forwards are more likely to win All-Star MVP honors than any other position. A player listed at power forward has won the award 13 different times.

Anthony Davis earned his third All-Star MVP selection this season (also won in 2013 and 2018). He joins Tim Duncan (2002, 2006, and 2008) and Shawn Kemp (1992, 1994, 1999) as the third player to have won the award three times.

Anthony Davis already leads the Eastern Conference in career all-star scoring (173 points); Deron Williams is second with 158 points. Kevin Durant is the West's career leader with 208 points (Kemp had 206).

Only one player who was listed at SG has ever won all-star MVP. Michael Jordan was that player and he did it twice (1991 and 1993).

Jordan, Anfernee Hardaway, Chris Bosh, and Kevin Durant have all won the award twice.

Best individual scoring performance in an all-star game? Kevin Love going off for 45 points on 21-of-26 shooting (with 15 boards and 8 assists) in 2017. The only other times players have eclipesed the 40-point mark were Anthony Davis going for 43 points in 2016, Latrell Sprewell dropping 41 in 1996 and Chris Bosh managing 40 in 2014.

In 2016, Derrick Rose scored 36 on his way to MVP honrs and Kevin Durant had 39 for the West. In 2004, Chris Webber dropped 32 and Tim Duncan had 39 for the West (but the MVP went to Tim Thomas of the victorious East). These are the only times teammates have gone for 30+ points in the all-star game.

They were teammates on the West team, not teammates "in the regular season." That wasn't worded clearly on my part.
