Sacramento Kings Preseason Presser

Good morning everyone, gather around gather around. This is the start of a brand new decade, millennium, and era. We have gone through a lot, not just here in Sacramento, but the league in general. From the days of the creation draft, to Malone dominating every scoring record, to Kemp and Zo trading blows, and Penny Hardaway still silently blowing everyone away. They still live, but by the end of the add upcoming decade they will become names of the past, with their impact on the game weighing less than dust in the wind.
Its a new age.
Its a new time.
One thing has stood tall through these 10 seasons, and that is winners being able to adapt to changes. We are seeing it now with the Hawks, the most dominating team and two time champion in the first two seasons team. Its been a long time since they were considered "one of the better teams" but at the new start of the new decade they are back into that discussion.
Teams like the Lakers, Warriors, and Mavs have had more successful seasons than not. These teams slso have championships, mutltiple, in fact!
Then there is the Kings. The "Regular Seasonn Champs" Multiple division banners, more than we can shake a stick at. But there is an empty spot on our trophy case that we are anxious to fill. You already know what it is so theres no reason to say its name.
We look forward to a new start. We have a nice blend of youth and veterans and have committed to building an identity as a team that prides itself in defense. Luckily our veterans didnt die during dreaded training camp. Popeye ia still a prized PF in our eyes and will be a tough rebounder and defender, and Dee Brown will continue to be our defensive perimiter defender.
In place of Augmon, we brought in Bryon Russell to replace his defense. Unfortunately for Augmon, he was becoming a liability on offense by taking away from McGrady anfand Camby. We look to our young stars to lead this team now. When we brought in Augmon, he was the league leading scorer while Tracy was still struggling to score 10 ppg. He brought tremendous scoring ability to our team, but now this is McGrady's team. At 20 years old he will need to become the leader we know he can be. Winning the division is never easy and we have bigger plans in mind, but Tracy has helped bring the division title home twice in a row. We expect this now.
Antonio Daniels and Keon Clark are also expected to increase their roles on our team. We may even experiment with Daniels at starting SG and McGrady at the 3, having Russell coming off the bench. We have options and are excited to experiment.
Questions and comments are now welcomed

Is anything less than a championship a dissapointment?

Yes, it is. I feel we were one home game away from winning a championship. Lakers were able to steal one and we weren't, but when you are that close you want to be the one next time making it.

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: Where's the real stars of the Kings at? I'm talking about T&T security. Also how difficult was it to part with Big Black Box of Dildos Anderson?

T&T are around making sure this area is secured for my presence. They have been taking background checks and scanning this environment for any threats to eliminate.
As far as Shandon is concerned, we made a late push in UFA to retain him with a 4 year minomum deal, but the Nuggets narrowly outbidded me unfortunately. We will loom for others to step up and fill the void Shandon leftmleft.

Nathan Sliver, FiveThirtyNine:
Your team seems built to take down the Shaqs and Kemps of the league. How comfortable do you feel against guard heavy teams like the Hawks with Spree and Penny?

I really like this question because I did build this team to slow down the Kemps and Shaqs we had in this conference. At one point it felt the West had all the most talented bigs sans Alonzo, so it was a big priority in having a defensive front court.
On the flip side as you pointed out, my team can't do the same against wing heavy or guard heavy super talents like the Hawks. Luckily for us they are hoarding most of the better players that would give us fita. We have tried bringing in players like Augmon, Dee Brown and Bryon Russell, but Penny will take what he wants no matter who guards him. Jason Kidd is almost the same, we are just lucky he isnt scoring in the upper 20s.
We hope we have a bend but dont break defense on the perimeter. Thats the best we can hope for.

GWR: How long do you see Popeye Jones as your PF? Are you looking for more of a scorer as he declines?

This will be Popeye's final ride as a King. We were happy in training camp that he didnt die, as he kept most of his skill attributes the same. However, oNe of the hardest lessons to learn as GM is learning how to let go.
Popeye still will be a great contributor to the team but we have Keon Clark waiting in the wings to move from 6th man to starting PF. He provides great defense and can clean up the boards with the best of them. With another year to train he will be an excellent fit next to Camby.

What has Keon Clark's response been to being shopped after calling him to have an increased role on your team?

He laughed slightly less than when you called Patterson "youthful talent"

Never mind, Clark is gone so our PF spot past this season is unknown at the time. Hopefully we will find one in free agency the next offseason.

What has been your approach this offseason? If there was a song or album that was on repeat in the weight room and gym this offseason, what was it?

Random Reporter: You mentioned that this season will be Popeye Jones' swan song. Is this the last big run for Sacramento as a championship contender for the time being? How motivated are you to win one for Popeye?

Popeye is an excellent PF, very underrated his whole career. However, with him being in his last season, that in no way makes this season our final push. With McGrady and Camby, we will continue to try and form a championship level team. The West is tough but it isnt impossible.

Random generic Mavs reporter: The Kings have been a legitimate contender the past few seasons. What's the key to getting over the hump this season and winning a title?

Twice in a row we have won the division, and twice in a row we have fallen short. I think the key will be to find not just one gameplan that works for the regular season. We went all last season with basically the same DC with little changes and had an amazing stretch of victories. That was regular season, and in the playoffs we were met by the Lakers who were versatile enough to match up against anyone. Hopefully with some new additions we can do the same. Antonio Daniels is a big part in that change.
