2017 Lotto/Draft Thoughts

With the Spurs defeating the Knicks in the Finals, we can put the bow on another PBSL season. But for others, the real season is beginning. That's right, baby, it's offseason time! DRAFT PICKS! TRADES! QUESTIONABLE FREE AGENT SIGNINGS! With draft selections looming ahead, let's take a look around the league-

LUCK OF THE IRISH

The Celtics hold a 44.9% chance of landing the top pick, thanks to holding the top two spots. That's pretty much a lock!

(Wait...the top spot in the lotto hasn't landed the first pick in the last 5 years?! Ahem.)

In spite of recent history, GM Conroy has to feel pretty good about those odds. Some might say this column space might exist as a reverse jinx, but I'm a firm believer in the odds. What the Celtics choose to do with these picks is another story.

(Also, will we/are we capable of adapting the the real NBA's new lottery odds? Discussion for later...)

TRADE WINDS BLOWING

The Celtics, Magic, and Trailblazers hold a combined eight first round picks. I would expect that some of the picks will find their way elsewhere. The question is- who's looking for youth? The trade blocks have been relatively quiet, but GMs such as BowToTheBill have expressed a desire to rebuild. I wouldn't be surprised by multiple blockbusters over the next few days.

SHOOT IT, YOU MIDGET

Football is a game of inches, but sim basketball is right behind it. The shrinkage of the league continues with this year's draft. Top center prospect Wilmer Pak is a towering 6-8; sounds more like a future power forward to me. Shooting guard looks no better, with William Garrard being the only rookie taller than 6-4. At least there are viable small forward prospects taller than 6-6 this time. The league will adapt, but I'm wondering if we'll put a higher premium on the real players who have some height to them.

WITH THE NUMBER ONE PICK...

At a glance, all the top players have a glaring flaw. We've already discussed Wilmer Pak. Ronald Small will probably need a boost to his C passing potential and David Roddy will probably need a speed boost. Emilien Lorfeuve looks like the best wing prospect since Gustave Lecroix, but is he a future Jabari Parker? As always, these picks will require patience, a virtue as valuable as a top pick in the draft.

WIN NOW, YOUNG MAN

There are a handful of players out of the lottery that could help a team right now. Arlen Yeh could play valuable back up PG minutes, William Garrard could get to the line with his 91 JMP, and Robert Neeley might be able to start with some training boosts.

SECOND ROUND STEALS

Unfortunately, there are no 7-4 centers with 50 quickness in this year's draft, but there will be some steals at the bottom. Benedict Woolfolk looks like he could be instant inside offense and Ezra Radtke has starting PG capable passing now. Maybe J2 will use a second rounder on Petruchio Wilson- he's 7-2 with a B potential inside and a non-terrible 35 QKN.

HAVE FUN SELLING INSURANCE

We always take time to look at the best rookies- here's a moment to look at the worst player in the draft, Valentin Flicek. With the exception of FTS, he has no attribute higher that 12. Maybe he can use his 74 QKN to quickly find a new career path. Good luck kid, cause no is drafting you.
