Wig liveblogs the 2000 draft

Action: Sonics select Redd #1
Reaction: this was the safe pick and the right pick. Redd may or may not ever make an all star game but at least the possibility exists. Everyone else in this draft not so much. The Sonics really couldn't mess this one up, could they?

Action: Malik Rose shipped to the Bucks for points and a bag of used basketballs
Reaction: Now he is the second best Rose on his team. Guessing that the Bucks are trying to get cheap depth because you know Shaq will be getting a supermax. Hornets get points, which I guess is good to train Stack... Nevermind. You know the Hornets want Gugs back, not Stack.

Action: The Wizards pick Jamal Crawford
Reaction: Every pick this draft will be a gamble after Redd. With Crawford the gamble is probably can he handle the ball well enough to be a big one? Probably not. If he is a slightly undersized two he should still be okay. He should be a scary scorer in a couple of years wherever he plays, though, so even if I'm worried about ceiling I am not worried about his floor.

Action: The Blazers select Jamal Magloire at #3
Reaction:
The Blazers have been down the road of an offensively challenged center before with Shawn Bradley. And Magloire is not Bradley. Manu is still years away from being good. I know their needs are at C and PG but I would have sooner grabbed some more offense and shuffled my guys around a little to make it work - for example, Dirk is big enough to play C in a pinch if you want to play small ball and Mike Miller's three point stroke would have fit nicely here.

Action: The Magic select Mike Miller at #4
Reaction: If there were any doubts Stack is on his way out of Orlando as soon as coltsguy can unload him, this pick should have put them to bed. Now I'm wondering if the Magic will double down and sign 4 SG's in Free Agency a la the old Blazers.

Action: Reports surface of Webber, Penny, Carter on the block.
Reaction: Every GM in the league be like:
Seriously, what is going on with this draft? It's like everyone is trying to press the reset button in the middle of the worst draft ever. That or everyone saw last week's SI cover:

Inaction: Three and a half hours after the Magic pick, crickets from the Bulls
Reaction: I'm hoping this is due to furious trade discussions and we get an awesome trade payoff. If they just grab a player, I will be quite disappointed.

Action: The Bulls select Stephen Jackson
Reaction:
We got teased that maybe a trade was forthcoming... And this. Not sure if he was a perfect fit for the Bulls, since they already have Tim Thomas and Kobe is an RFA... thought a big would have been a better pick here. But people love that "potential" word.

Action: random post appears in my blog.
Reaction: Clearly this new blogging software is not as secure as I would like. Either that or the CIA is snooping on me... and T Mac.
Also, when did first initial - first syllable of last name become a thing? These are horrid nicknames and need to stop.

Action: Pistons pick Kenyon Martin number 6 overall
Reaction: Detroit is a dying city. KMart is a dying brand. Perhaps it's time to rethink my stance on first initial first syllable of last name nicknames. These two are perfect for each other.

Action: Pistons select Joel Przybilla at 7
Reaction: The old adage is you can't teach size. Every draft it seems like big guys get selected before where their talent dictates they should go. In this case, I think the Wizards have enough offense potential locked in their young guys to make a defensive minded big worth a shot though.

Action: Hawks select Raja Bell at 8
Reaction: R-Bell... Sounds like a love child of Arby's and Taco Bell. Speaking of which, it's been a long boring draft... Time to go get some food.

Action: The Hawks trade Bell and Maggette for Grant Hill and cash.
Reaction: I go get food and this happens! Best trade of the draft!
So far.
I mean, look at the competition.
Seriously, though, this is the beginning of the Wolves rebuilding and we can only assume Webber is next.
As for what this means for the Hawks I will just leave this here:

Delayed trade reaction: How was this not 7 points instead of 8?

Action: Bryon Russell traded to the Kings for 8 points.
Reaction: Ah, now the trade winds are starting to blow. In a league of Copycats, the Kings saw the Lakers commit to D and win a title last season. One presumes they will be looking to improve their own defense in hopes of beating L.A. Hopefully this portends more action in the trade market because the draft is crawling along.

So, the draft picks all taking forever to happen means I got bored. But never fear, I'm back and let's catch up on the action!
Action: The Rockets select Quentin Richardson with the #9 pick
Reaction: At this point, it seems like all the players that even have an outside shot at growing into a starter are SG's and Keyon Dooling. Richardson has a couple of marketable skills - can hit the three, hit the offensive glass, and defends slightly better than a wet paper bag, so I guess that makes him a top 10 pick in this draft. I feel slightly sorry for Rockets fans. Last year, they were trying to build around Shaq. This year, they're trying to build around... Ruben Patterson? Then again, Ruben IS the face of Rockets fans everywhere...

Action: The Clippers select Keyon Dooling at #10
Reaction: I'm pretty sure this spells the end of the Nick Van Exel era in LA. He's an expiring contract, and I don't think the Clippers want to re-up him to another max deal. They do have two 20-year olds in the backcourt now with Dooling and Davis, so maybe they hope that will add up to a dose of "D" in the backcourt. It won't. The Clippers may make a little push this year, but the writing is on the wall - with an older core that didn't do much last season, it's time to blow it up.
Also, how on earth does Dooling never get rebounds? You'd think even if you were standing around the ball would bounce your way on a long three every now and again.

Action: The Rockets draft Hedo Turkoglu at #11
Reaction: I overheard from someone that the Rockets took so long to pick at #9 because they were agonizing over whether or not they should draft Turkoglu instead. Then again, I was surprised the Clippers grabbed Dooling, so maybe it was warranted. At any rate, the Rockets must be happy. They add Hedo to a team already full of wing players. Maybe they're planning on starting four wings plus Big Z this year? I would have thought a better fit would be a bruising 4 but maybe they're going to let Ruben play the 4

Action: Rockets draft DerMarr Johnson at #12
Reaction: Hm... drafting a 6'9" shooting guard? I know teams like height but this is ridiculous. Did you know you can re-arrange DerMarr to spell "Dare?" As in "Yinka Dare"? As in such a black hole on offense you may as well set up for a rebound when he gets the ball cause you know it's never coming back out? Maybe they're going to ask HIM to play PF for them. Teams have got to be wishing it was last year, when the #12 pick would get you a Wally Sczerbiak, a guy who... nevermind.
Actually, I just got word DerMarr is going to be the spokesman for all Weinerschnitzels in Houston. Seems legit.

Action: The Supersonics draft Mark Blount and Chris Mihm with picks 13 and 14
Reaction: You think Sonics fans are hoping these guys are the second coming of Zan Tabak? That's how bad it is for Sonics fans these days. The only way it could get worse was if the team was to draft a couple of studs the next two or three years and then move to some podunk, middle-of-nowhere place like, I don't know, Oklahoma.
