Minnesota Timberwolves 2008-2009 Press Conference

THE LIGHTS GO OUT.

“Mistakes happen. Every GM makes them. Some make them more than others.”

Grainy footage of Chris Webber and Grant Hill, hugging each other, confetti dropping as they advance to the Western Conference Finals.

“Sometimes the mistake isn’t clear until later, when you look back and realize everything you could have had.”

Now a photo of Webber, Hill, Robot Pack, and the PBSL Trophy. This is obviously photoshopped.

“Sometimes the mistake is obvious the moment you make it.”

Rip Hamilton and Chris Bosh walk off the Nuggets floor, heads down. They share a look.

“When mistakes meet random misfortune, it’s time to stop pretending. It’s time to forge another path. And that’s why I’d like to thank the city of Minneapolis and the ownership of the Timberwolves for giving me a lifetime contract. So I’m able to make mistakes, learn from them, and move on to make more. Or to make good decisions. Because I’ve proven I can do that too.”

Finally, a singular logo of the Timberwolves.

The lights fade up where The JNR is standing, alone. No players, no coaches. Just him and the press.

The JNR: Thank you for joining us. As you can see, this is a different feel than our previous press conferences. Most of them were player based. We’d introduce our new players, have them feel like they’re part of the winning formula, and allow them to answer questions. Today it’s just me. If you had a question to ask about Stromile Swift and his latest drug charge, it’ll have to go through me first.

The vibe here is different too. I’ve been largely positive in my time here, because we’ve been a fairly successful franchise. We have no finals appearances, but we do have two conference finals appearances, and other GMs have noted that we appear in the mix every year. So usually my air is plucky, positive, and perhaps a little overconfident.

You won’t find that today.

The JNR looks at the logo on the screen and sighs.

The JNR: Today we need to be honest with ourselves. Everything about my rebuild around Chris Bosh has gone wrong. We’ve been to the playoffs four times with him, and all four times we’ve been ousted in the first round. I tried to give him a young scorer to pair off with, and the pairing hasn’t seemed to work on the court. I’ve put veteran contributors around him, and we’ve still come up short. So now, the honesty:

This will be one of the worst seasons in Minnesota basketball history. We’ve won 17 games. We’ve won 16 games. This has the potential to be worse. We have pieces that don’t fit well together, or aren’t ready to step up. Chris has had another bad training camp, and doesn’t appear to be the player he was two years ago. We’re in shambles, and to say otherwise would be untruthful.

So, what do we do about it?

Well, I’ve gone through this before. It starts with the point guard position. We need someone who bonds with Chris, who can find him and others in space. We need someone who is athletic and smart. We also need a frontcourt partner for him. And we need luck. A lot more than we’ve gotten recently.

For my part, I’ll do my best not to be impatient. I’ll take the losses as they come, knowing it’s part of a plan. And with luck, and hopefully a few less mistakes on my part, we’ll have a contender in Minnesota once again.

Questions?

Jean Baptiste, VanMemphis Inquisitor

Yesterday there was the feeling that you were lashing out by taking offers for Chris Bosh after the TC Report came back. 12+ hours later, where do you stand on his future in Minnesota?

Nick Melon; The Advocate: Given the sullen mood and the destructive ways that training camp can be, you've had the trade block updated quite regularly throughout the offseason. Would you say the team cohesion level is at an all time low?

Would it take a picture of young timber pups to make The JNR happy again for the moment? It's lonely in the abyss.

The JNR: Thanks for the question, Mr. Baptiste. The initial reaction to the reports was indeed very negative. I felt helpless, and I asked around for Bosh's perceived value around the league. After receiving a few offers -- one of which was very interesting, but some of which were the most awful, insulting offers I've ever received as a GM -- I realized that his perceived value is much more to my team than it is to any other. So I'm committed to Bosh on our team for now. But if an offer that I really like comes along...who am I to say no?

Does it make you feel better that Andre Igudola had a terrible TC after being paid?

The JNR: Thanks for the question, Mr. Melon. I can't say if our cohesion is low right now, the yearly cohesion report hasn't come out yet from our Generic Wolves Reporter -- who does amazing work, by the way. I will tell you that here, in my brain, in the land of the person who runs this basketball team, we are indeed in a sullen mood. I don't contemplate quitting, but for a brief moment yesterday I felt the urge to walk away. It passed, but times are still unhappy in the Twin Cities.

The JNR: I don't typically concern myself with other teams' players and their training camp. As far as I'm concerned, young players shouldn't be subject to such huge drops in potential and ability in training camp. It neuters the league.

Bosh being only 24 gives you plenty of time to reset around him. Do you plan on using TC insurance on him while he's eligible?

The JNR: This year proved we have to use it. If we hadn't, it would have been even worse. And yes, Bosh is only 24, which is amazing considering how long he's been in the league. He will hopefully still reach his preserved potential.

The pairing of Rip Hamilton and Bosh has resulted in offensive fireworks, but, as you mention, not a lot of playoff success. As you continue to build around Bosh, are you still in an offense-first mindset, or do you see defense as the way to success in Minnesota?

The JNR: I think it needs to be defense oriented. I created an offensive whirlwind for most of the years Bosh was growing. But the best teams right now are teams that stop the ball. I think that requires a defensive point guard, an anchor at center, and at least one wing defender.

Mr. Nets: How difficult is it to resist the urge to hitting that reset button and trying to start over like the Bucks have every other season?

The JNR: Well, we're trying to do just that. I had been tempted the year before, and the year before that, but I think it's finally the right time to see if we can get this rebuild right.

Do you have any plans on trading Chris Bosh after Bosh alleged "Dehydration" rumor during this past year's TC? What are your future plans for Rip Hamilton?

The JNR: No active plans to trade Bosh. We do actively have Rip on the block.

Random Reporter: Lost in the Bosh news is the fact that the first of his potential new running mates, JaVale McGee, improved in TC. However, it was also revealed that his low basketball IQ would most likely limit his potential. What are your thoughts on McGee coming out of camp?

The JNR: Great question. McGee was one of the guys I was really excited about going into training camp. I'm now considerably less excited. He still has the potential to contribute, but he won't be our starting center as of now.

Jack Markson here. With Marbury, Hamilton, and Bosh, you still look like you have an awful lot of offensive firepower on your team. In what might be a weak year overall in the West, do you think that you can compete for a playoff spot? And would competing for a playoff spot be a welcomed scenario for your team, or are you more focused on the future?

The JNR: We've spent the last few years just happy to make the playoffs, so I think a change of mentality is necessary going forward. It's a weak conference, but we don't just want to be one and done, and that appears to be our current team's ceiling.

Sports Guy Bill Simmons here, a look around the league (specifically my own teams roster) Chris Bosh is actually on a pretty reasonable contract for his talents. He will be on this contract for 4 years, is their a certain amount of pressure that a solid core needs to be put in place within this timeframe. Rookies take time to develop new signings can take time to mesh or are often very expensive.

The JNR: I don't think so because he's so young. He has time to grow, and even if it takes 4 years to put a comfortable team around him, we have the option to give him a longer deal at 28. I don't actually feel a ton of pressure on that front.
