Draft

I understand 100s of hours have been spent on the draft process to get to where we are today, and I appreciate that. But what happened last night/this morning bothered me. I found the situation unfair, and I don't want it to happen again in the future.
With that being said, I think there is an easy solution to improve the process.
We should set a draft schedule so that everyone knows exactly when their turn to pick is. So if the #1 pick is at 6 pm, the #2 pick is at 8 pm no matter what (even if #1 picks immediately), the #3 pick is at 10 pm, and so on. Some might say that the draft will move too slowly if we do this. If that's the case, then let's make the draft time 30 minutes per pick. That way if we know our schedule beforehand, people can prepare, there is no excuse for missing a pick, and the draft moves quickly.
I think this would help improve the draft process dramatically. Thanks for the consideration.

You're probably going to get some resistance on this but I don't think it hurts to discuss possible ideas and suggestions. Much prefer this than the blowup in the draft thread.
I dont think its a half bad idea personally.

I'm gonna go ahead and say I disagree with your conclusion on this. I think that shortening the time (which would almost certainly have to happen because I don't think two hours per pick would pass) would limit spontaneous trade talks during picks.
Another issue I have with this is what would you do if you can't be there for your specified time? Let's say you know you will have no access to your computer at your time, the solution would be, obviously, to make a list which we already allow currently and would have honestly solved your issue
I'm sorry I just don't see why we're trying to find a fix for what has largely been a non issue

My initial reaction is that 2 hours per pick in this vane IS too slow, and I'm much more likely to miss a 30 minute window due to work meetings, etc. than the current way. Personally, I don't feel strong enough that the current way needs to change. Perhaps we make PMs from the previous picker mandatory? I think that solves your problem without completely overhauling the system. It also doesn't take much time to PM the next person to say 'you're up, buddy'.

Sounds like a fair solution.

If you subscribe to the draft thread you don't have to rely on the previous owner.

I do think PMs to the next team is appropriate especially since our emails are notified of PMs.

Look I don't mind this being like "hey try to remind the next person" but I have an issue with saying it should be "mandatory". I'm just not sure why the onus should be on someone else, especially when you can just as easily say "I missed so and sos PM"

The lists, given more than a small fraction of a night to generate them (ahem) solve everything but trade talks. The time is there for trade talks when viewed in that light. So, we can eliminate trades during the now instantaneous draft via list, have pick trades between the lotto and man-sim of draft, and have a day of trades prior to RFA while the second round lists are being compiled. It's less sniping tradewise, less dramatic, but is quicker, puts the onus on the masses, is less work for the illuminati, and still leaves room for draft analysis, trade followups, and more.

Don't really like it but I agree with all your points

I don't like it either, but it's just an attempt to get something in the mix. It is literally a parking lot of CC's idea. I mean, might as well toss ideas on the table that are feasible, reduce "error," and at least reduce "concentrations" of work on people.
Maybe someone can riff on it, make it good. Not sure.
Besides, I need enough legitimate suggestions to hide behind when I rant for the Frye of it. Plausible deniability plus "credit" make for wonderful fun.

I agree with you, and I'm not trying to overhaul the system. But I still think something can be done to improve the process. The draft is one of the most important aspects of the game. Let's treat it as such.

Yes it is one of the more important aspects, but just like when people miss the deadline for FA, I can't help but feel like what happened today was anyone's fault but your own. We're trying to get down 29ish people with vastly different schedules to be around for this and largely the way it is currently has worked. What happened to you hasn't been an issue before and I'm still not quite sure how or why it became one today much less one we need to change the way the draft works for

This may sound a bit callous, and FTB, I totally understand your frustration, but this is the first complaint about the draft process since I came back. When we revamped the draft process, about a 4th of the people complained it took too long, a 4th complained it wasn't long enough, and about half was pleased. In my opinion, that's a sign we've probably got a good time limit. There is no such thing as a "perfect" draft process for us. There's 29 people with lives, families, friends, school/work, etc. There's no system that can be foolproof for every situation and allow time for trade talks without the draft taking forever. In my opinion, if this is the first complaint about the draft process since I can remember, we can realize it sucked that it happened but also understand that one complaint in however many seasons shouldn't necessitate a change in the process.

Yes. Thank you Ben and Louie. The draft has been run smoothly without hiccups for many seasons now and that in itself is a miracle. It means it's just where it needs to be. Nothing extreme needs to be done. I won't beat the dead horse that happened earlier. That horse is dead as Frye.
3 simple solutions can and will happen. 2 of them are not votable things....
1) Subscribe to the draft forum on your own. You will get a notification when any new post is posted. That is YOUR responsibility. We aren't doing any "mandatory" pming of GMs. So you knowing exactly when you are on the clock......SOLVED!!
2) The draft file will be completed and uploaded from now on by the end of the Finals. Just something Wig and we as an admin team will make sure happens. SOLVED
3) Move the dead time from Midnight to 10PM. THIS CAN BE VOTED ON AND WOULD PASS EASILY.
SOLVED
I just solved all the problems. Your welcome.

I skimmed through the other posts so pardon me if this is a repeat but...
A PM from the previous picker wouldn't have helped in your position because you would have then had the same 8+ hours of time on the clock.
Having 29 or 30 active and engaged GMs every draft has made it one of the smoothest processes we have because there is a sense of excitement. Because of that, the draft has almost always run smoothly. This has been the only controversy we have seen in regards to the time rule. Just seems weird since it wasn't for calling it too close to the 2 hour limit and the affected GM got a whole night on the clock.
This is nothing personal to the GM, but I disagree and in turn down-vote the proposition.

Fair enough. One thing, a PM would have helped because I would have received an email which I check immediately at all times.
I guess I'm blind, but I didn't know about the subscribe button, so good to know.
Thanks for hearing me out.
