The NBA Champions Press Conference (with special guest)

Inner: Good afternoon everyone. I hope everyone's doing well today. We had a strong season winning the pacific division crown, the west in the regular season, best record in the NBA, and the championship. The team performed incredibly and the vision we saw the year before when acquiring KVH all came together. Unfortunately, the team couldn't stick together long term. We have to be financially responsible in developing the future of the Lakers. KVH, Kidd, and Don Reid all were moved for future first round picks and Antonio Daniels. We are still looking to compete in the Pacific Division but the Lakers need to reset the Tax counter before we make another run at the championship.
Inner: I'd like to now bring in, BSH. Many believe he ran this team last year...
BSH:
Inner: BSH, How did you handle the stress of GMing in the shadows of the league?
BSH:
Inner: Well, that may be true, but can you speak to what the rift was when you left the Lakers organization publicly 2 year ago, but still tried to shadow gm from Philly?
BSH:
Inner: Is that owner Lynn Reed?!?!?!?!
BSH:
Inner: ....
BSH:
Inner: What kind of twisted person are you BSH? Security can you escort BSH out of the building...
BSH:
Inner: MY GAWD..........
If anyone wants to talk basketball, leave a question below... I'm losing my mind...

JNR: Hughes had a great preseason. Do you think he's ready to be KG's right hand man?

We think so. Hughes always played the 4 or 5th option for the lakers, but he is only 26. He's ready to be the #1 or #2 depending on the matchup. We just want Hughes to continue to focus on defense. He is the best defender on the team. I'm excited to see Hughes take on a larger role in this offense.

Nick Melon; Charlotte Observer: Why would you present the previous administration in such a negative light? Also? How determined are you to really trade your star player?

Random Reporter: Some would say that your eagerness to blow up a championship team stems from a desire to establish your own identity, away from the constant comparisions to the previous owner. In short, you want to win your way, with your own guys. Is that indeed the case?

Dr. Rocker, The Cleveland Rocker: You are still $16,548,192 over the cap, and the only single contract you have that can take you under the line is Peeler, who only Cleveland has expressed interest in. Since you will likely be paying a hefty tax bill anyway, then, why dismantle Mr. O'Hard's title team? Isn't Tax + Title better than Tax + No Title? Our sources in Marietta say that the Hawks have determined this to be the case. Do the Lakers disagree with the far superior Hawks?

BSH presented himself in this manner...
I'm determined to rebuild a championship team. Trading KG for fair value could help, but I'm not trading KG for fun. We are trying to build this team again.

Oh boy. This is fun.
I already have a deal in the works to get under the cap, and not once has Cleveland ever expressed interest in any Laker player while under my watch. I already won my title with the roster I wanted and the game plan I wanted.

Not the case at all. People forgot that I didn't just take the previous owners team and win a ship without making any moves. The Lakers do not win a championship without trading Stackhouse and Kirilenko for KVH before they both got way overpaid on the FA market.
My desire to rebuild this team stemmed entirely from my desire to get value for players that I no longer envisioned signing or planning around long term. Often times GMs hold onto players until they have no value. The Lakers have 6 picks in the next 3 years, and still have KG and Hughes as center pieces to rebuilding this team. The KVH trade cap issues have led to a less than desirable offseason, but I still think we got above market value for KVH.

Just as clarification, the Cleveland interest was publicly expressed last season, just before the post-season.

As a preview of what we intend, we're very interested in clearing enough space to accept Anthony Peeler's contract, some points, and a rookie scale contract in exchange for a minimum salary player to give the Magic a chance to sign some free agents, if they are interested.
Orlando responded with a pithy and suave negotiating move:
You're ass
Which was countered with:
You love it.
Have your girl call my girl, we'll do lunch.
This is simply the tenor of open negotiations, but clearly Orlando got a better deal because the Lakers were scared of a little tax, and that just goes to show that even Orlando can do a good deal from time to time.
There are 2 teams that can give the relief you need, 3 if you waive some players, The Nuggets, Knicks, and Pistons.
It doesn't serve Denver well to help you save your points (or the other teams, but they are in your conference) and they appear to be continuing their rebuild, and Peeler may on hurt their draft pick. The Pistons are an interesting case because they may actually want to be better, of they have an offer of Doleac for Horry on the table, which may serve them better in terms of improvement, since they don't have their pick and saves them some cap next season. The Knicks have Carmelo, so I don't see that.
I'm sure we'll see what happens, but those seem like great reasons for teams to just let Peeler sit there for a season and just destroy your points bank and have one less team to worry about for seasons to come as they build for a title.
If you are trading other players, it's hard to see how you get under the tax and get fair value, but I'm sure it could happen. It's a big league, and anything can happen.
We, Cleveland, of course wish you the best of luck with the plan, especially when teams should just let the taxed out teams hold their salary and deplete their war chests or deal players for much better deals than initially offered as the pressure mounts. You'll need it, and you'll need those teams really not to think about what has been clearly laid out here.

TL;DR You should try GMing your own team. Like I said. I already have moves to get under the cap.

I'm a reporter, not a GM. I'm an educated reporter, but that's what our franchise demands. The owner is . . . tough. It's not like it is out here in LA where your reporters are half-high all the time.
I must say, it's very clear you don't read (TL;DR). What's not clear is if you can.
It's also not clear, as you said, that you're actually GM'ing your own team. Care to address those allegations in something other than pictures?

Henry Gates, Houston Chronicle.
What's your true expectations for the season with all the moves you've made? How hard was it breaking up a championship squad and where do you see your team this season and beyond?

We are a fringe playoff team in the west. The west is very weak right now. It was hard to break up a championship team, but we couldn't continue to pay Jason Kidd and KVH long term, so we got value while we could.
This season is all about retooling. We are looking at making a couple of moved to get some good players under contract so we can build through FA and the Draft in the upcoming seasons. KG and Hughes are ready to carry the load for the Lakers. We'll have a good idea what we have by day 60.

So I have a question about the fans and the Lakers ownership. You've won a championship. Congrats. But that's what the Lakers are supposed to do...EVERY YEAR. There is a history, a legacy if you will, that the Lakers are always contenders. You took the team over from BSH. FACT. You made a few changes with the team. FACT. You didn't play with the "BSH makeup" enough to affect the team still contending. FACT.
So you win it all, which is expected of you, and now your move is to bring the team out of contention? You trade away the great Jason Kidd and KVH for baked beans. The fans are irate. Yet ownership has had your back until....
Earlier in the week a trade offer you received and turned down was brought to light. You were offered a 20 ppg veteran for nothing more than a rookie who will never help you win a single game. AND your cap would stay the same. Yet you turned it down. You turned down a chance to contend nearly for free.
My question is how has ownership not fired you yet? A GM who openly brings a team from the heavens back down to Earth. Inquiring minds want to know.
