San Antonio Spurs 1991 Preseason Presser

Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome back to HemisFair Arena as we officially open the doors for our 1991–92 San Antonio Spurs media day and training camp press conference.
Before diving into the weeks ahead, we want to pause and reflect on where we stand. Last spring’s playoff run all the way to the Western Conference Finals against Seattle tested our character and proved the mettle of this franchise. While falling short of the ultimate goal still stings, the grit shown by this group was remarkable. To our fans across South Texas, you are the lifeblood of the silver and black. The roar inside this arena during those spring nights was unforgettable, and we carry your passion into every practice and every game.
Sustaining a championship culture means making tough choices and evolving. We experienced some shifts this summer, and we want to officially thank Mark West as he moves on to the next chapter of his career.
To try and keep up with the Western Conference contenders, our front office worked diligently to inject new blood and veteran savvy into our rotation:
Larry Nance brings a seasoned, elite defensive presence, renowned rim protection, and that reliable high-post shooting touch to our frontcourt.
Mike McGee adds veteran composure, critical floor spacing, and steady perimeter shooting to our second unit.
Derek Strong, our rookie addition out of Xavier who has wasted zero time establishing himself, turning heads immediately with his relentless motor and physical rebounding in camp.
Even with these new pieces, the core identity of this team remains rock solid. Training camp has been steady and productive. We have ironed out the early kinks, though there are still fine-tuning details to address before tipoff next month.
Michael Jordan returned looking entirely unstoppable, carrying a fierce competitive edge and an unmatched intensity that is dictating the pace of every single drill.
Magic Johnson remains the ultimate floor general, orchestrating our fast breaks with jaw dropping vision and keeping the locker room loose and energized.
Chris Mullin has looked razor-sharp, punishing defenses with his perimeter marksmanship while showing an upgraded ability to create off the dribble.
Tom Chambers continues to stretch opposing defenses with his explosive, high-flying scoring package.
Now, we have to address the reality of camp as well. It hasn't been a smooth transition for everyone, and Danny Manning is the first to admit he’s had a difficult training camp. He's been fighting through some sluggishness, struggling to find his rhythm and working through obvious frustration as he tries to get back his footing. But Danny is a high character professional. He’s staying late to put in extra work with the coaching staff, and we have total confidence that he will grind through this rough patch and find his dominant form once the games start counting.
We know the landscape has shifted and teams are getting better. We hope we can continue our playoff run and hopefully a deep run. We will see how things go this season.
Our mandate for the months ahead is simple: integrate our new additions quickly and hopefully lock down homecourt advantage for at least one playoff series right here at HemisFair Arena. No matter how the season ends, we are going to try and make sure that we put out a competitive product the fans will be proud of.
