Welcome in everybody to the Supersonics Press Conference.
I know we are usually about the theatrics but this season we're going to cut back on those and just get right into it.
By all accounts, we absolutely see last season as a success. We came so close to glory but came up short. As a franchise that hadn't even come close to sniffing the finals, it was exciting to finally be in the big game. But now that we had a taste of it, we want more. And I believe we have the team to bring home the trophy this season.
While last season was incredible, we went 70-12 and finished top 5 in so many team categories, it was also just incredible to see our team come together. We made the decision to trade away Mark Aguirre in the middle of the season and some people questioned that move but we felt it was the right move. We loved Aguirre and wish him all the best, but something just clicked once we traded him away. Our team played even better than when we had him. If not for the injury to Clyde, I wholeheartedly believe we would have won the Finals last season. And I know some people will say things like "one injury shouldn't make that big of a difference" and maybe it shouldn't but Clyde is one of, if not the, best player in the league. He can play any position at an elite level and losing that kind of versatility will hurt any team. Just goes to show that other people needed our players to not play in order to beat us. But, we won't focus on that anymore. We're ready to move forward and get on with this upcoming season.
This offseason ended up putting us in position to get back to the finals again this season. We have the same starters returning along with Perdue and Dawkins coming off the bench. Clyde just keeps getting better, and bowie and worthy are still elite players. KJ and Perdue had a bit of a hiccup this offseason but they're back and ready to continue playing at the level they've always played. Dawkins showed he's all in this season and we think he can be even more helpful coming off the bench again this season than he was last season. We really think this team is ready to bring home the hardware and we're ready to prove we belong with the best of the best in this league and that last season wasn't a fluke.
We also managed to pick up two young guys in the draft and we're hoping they can learn from the veterans so when it's time to make some changes, they will be ready to step up. I have no doubt this team will compete, Just have to hope I can put everybody in the right spots to give them the best chances to succeed
