What makes for a good deadline deal?
Who are some of the star players you added or shipped at the deadline, and how did the trade impact winning that season?

There are lots of things that contribute to a trade deadline deal. Here are some scenarios that are often seen.
- a team over the cap needs some relief.
- a team not competing has players that can contribute in the playoffs
- a team on the bubble of competing looking for that last piece to push them into contention

What makes a good trade here is a trade that benefits both sides. I feel like this time of year, we see a lot of points moving. Often these points will be associated with a bad contract to offload it. I personally don't make a lot of deadline trades, especially for superstars. I decided to take a leap this year since I am currently leading the East. We will see if Dominique can add scoring to my team to keep up with some of the top players.

I hate to say it, but sometimes it's a combination of injury and opportunity.

Back in the first season of the league, James Donaldson went down for a month near the end of the season. I swapped him for a healthy Bill Cartwright (cost me a late first); at the time I saw them as very similar players - Cartwright was more polished on offense while Donaldson was more defensive. Of course, the next TC, Donaldson got a boost and became a much better player, but I couldn't have seen that coming and Cartwright helped me keep my seeding and fed my run to the Finals, then because a mainstay for my next few years.

Would I have made the trade had Donaldson not gotten injured? No; I was happy with my team at the time. But sometimes you have to adapt to circumstance and injury - or a competitor making a big move - is usually the impetus for a "good" deadline deal.

What makes for a good deadline deal?
One where everybody achieves their intended objective. Whether I'm buying talent for a playoff push, selling talent to get under the tax, or acquiring salary for points/picks. Everyone has a goal right now and whoever is aggressive to start talks usually finishes and benefits from the process.

I got Bernard King, Sidney Moncrief, and Jim Paxson by selling all of my assets. I liked the move at the time but Johnny Moore broke his leg during the playoffs and the team crashed out. It was worth it, to try and take a big swing so no regrets.

What is the same or different or the same about trading at the deadline as opposed to the rest of the season?
This is the last time you can tinker with your team until the offseason so the added pressure usually gets deals to the finish line compared to day 60 where one can side can "holdout" for a better deal at the deadline since there is time to negotiate. Here it is all or nothing. There is no fallback option.

What makes for a good deadline deal?

Sometimes a good deadline deal is not making a deal. Sometimes we get caught up in the frenzy of wanting to make a move and make a bad move just for the sake of trading. Sometimes making a deadline move is lateral depending on the makeup of your team. Unless of course it's a generational superstar player.

I think the only thing that is different is people trying to lower or get out their tax bill. Other than that I think it's the same. Well maybe getting some of those day 60 traded players being available.

I actually think this is the first time I traded away someone at the trade deadline. IN the past I've basically been one to take on contracts to get points/picks. But any year that I've competed, my team was basically in a position where I either couldn't make a move or didn't want to make a move.

I think what makes for a good deadline deal is someone who is either on the cusp of being a contender and someone trying to tank. Those two always make for fun trades. You get to see one team go all in to try and push them over the top to make a playoff run and you see the other team fully commit to a rebuild. And I always enjoy seeing how those teams turn out by the beginning of the next season

The deadline is a holiday for me.
I try to negotiate trades all season long, but the deadline puts juice in at least half the league every season.
It's the time when the margins close and the fringe get a haircut.
The recent deadline gift I gave was Lister the last time, when he helped Doug win the ship.
Everyone knows he is the last person I want to trade with, but nobody else would give me spit.
So I spite traded him and handed Doug the title.

Theoretically a good deadline deal is something well thought out. Realistically, I love a good BEAT THE BUZZER scramble to make a deal. Makes the deadline feel like an actual deadline... kinda like the real NBA. It brings another level to negotiations. Higher pressure, more stress due to time constraints... sometimes you might get a deal you otherwise not have gotten!

I didn't really make a move at the deadline. My big splash was moving on from Reggie Lewis & Doc for Mark Jackson & Jeff Malone. Got a "new" Doc AND some solid bench production that is cost controlled for the season. Best part is that between these moves and some others, I was able to get my ass under the tax threshold and reset my lux tax repeater status... which in turn can help me prolong my dynasty.
