MVP race looks wide open this year.
Who's the MVP in your opinion? Why?
Who will the computer pick?
Will this player do anything spectacular to close the season and separate himself, or does he mostly just need to be consistent?
Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers, which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.
Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5, 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.
Due: Deadline for Sim 10

I firmly believe Hakeem Olajuwon should be the MVP this season. He’s 9th in points (and looks to be rising), 6th in rebounds, 2nd in blocks. He also has the highest VA and one of the highest margins in O EFF and D EFF. All while having the Celtics compete with the super team spurs for the best overall record. I don’t think anybody else is more valuable to their team’s success than Hakeem. If the Celtics continue pushing these last few sims, we could see Hakeem averaging well over 35ppg the rest of the way.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if Malone or Ewing get the MVP award from the computer. They both are having great seasons but their aren’t having near the success of the Celtics. I think if Hakeem doesn’t get it, it should go to Ewing

I usually look at the Player of the Month awards to give me the CPU's opinion on the front-runners, and Karl Malone has 2 POM's while nobody else has more than one.
Malone is the scoring leader (above even an injured McHale), averages 10+ rpg, and is super-efficient (top 6 in FG% with a ridiculous TS%). I think we've entered the MalOPe era and he's your likely MVP.
I don't see him doing anything spectacular to close out the season, but mostly because he doesn't need to - Stockton is an awesome second star and the Suns have solid - but not incredible - players all around him. Besides, he's ALREADY dropped 50 points on three separate occasions - he's got his "signature games" in the bank already, he doesn't need another one.

Otis Thorpe
Enhanced/html/players/player407.htm
The Jazz are terrible but Otis Thorpe is quietly having an outstanding season. I think he is a lock for most improved player, but I think his career season more than stat padding. His PER is 27.2 which ranks amongst the league's elite. He has a 13.5 EWA which would put the Jazz at only 5-6 wins without him. I just appreciate how much he has elevated his game over the past few seasons and he is definitely earning his supermax contract.

I do want to give context, because it's obvious that Shawn Kemp is more valuable to his team than any other player in the league. However, with regard to how the league hands out the award, and takes winning into account, I think it's a 3 man race with a couple honorable mentions:
I think Karl Malone would ultimately get my vote, for a few reasons:
- League leader in scoring
- half rebound/game behind others in the conversation, but still respectable 11th in the league
- Much less support than others
- 28.3 PER
- 20.3 EWA
He's carrying the team in the desert like nobody else is carrying a playoff team.
Who will the computer pick?
I think the computer goes with Hakeem, and probably because of the next question. But I also think the computer will factor that win% and he is the Big Show in Bean Town.
Definitely the anchor of that defense which is elite.
Will this player do anything spectacular to close the season and separate himself, or does he mostly just need to be consistent?
I don't think it's in the bag yet.
I think either of these 2 as well as Buck Williams, as close to even money, and Barkley or Adams as dark horses could put together a string of games and snatch the hardware.
Gonna be fun to watch.
