For me, the “best” trade was the one where both teams got something they really wanted/needed, and for me that means the best trade was the Spurs sending the Warriors their pick back for Tom Chambers and a couple lesser picks.

For the Spurs, they plug the hole in the middle that UFA left when Gminski and Dawkins signed elsewhere but also add cheap depth in the picks, which they need while paying their superstars. For the Warriors, this gets them their own pick back, allowing them to commit to tanking now that Chambers is gone, and for an expiring player who will be 30 during UFA, a potential top 5 pick (where they can control their lotto odds to a large degree) is a great return.

This trade keeps the Spurs amongst the contenders, UFA had dealt them a very real setback and they felt vulnerable with a hole at Center. Not any more. At the same time, the Warriors have clearly tapped out on the season and join the tank ranks. Both teams have total clarity now of where they are going this year.

Amongst the destruction of the Warriors and Hawks and reorganizing for the lotto, the difference between “best” and “favorite” subjectively speaking both involved the Hawks. Just in terms of what he was looking for and extracting that value and having multiple chances at an even greater lotto ticket, the appeal of adding David Robinson or Shawn Kemp is gaining more traction across the league. That was evident after Day 60.

Hawks essentially reset their team by bringing in younger assets, resetting their books, and adding to their war chest. As a GM, that is exemplary work. Making big swings, Chad saw the chance to add LaSalle Thompson amid a team in flux and swung for the fences. Though, I do wonder how he’ll move the pieces around the board with Green, Thompson, & Bailey. What he gave up? Reggie Miller. A 3pt specialist that’s on a rookie deal and going to get more efficient and deadly as a scorer. Mitch Richmond & Mark Price is an excellent scoring combo from the wings to have Thompson & Bailey or Green clean up the misses.

Then Ryan found a new home for Kevin McHale, still a monster in this league, and shipped him off to Portland for essentially Ken Norman, and the Knicks potential lotto pick. Wig stockpiles talent while Ryan regroups and strengthens the possibility he could have two lotto picks in the next draft ahead. If it hits and he gets Kemp or Robinson, there’s your answer for the next decade plus as the next dominant player in SLOE.

Then came the trade of Derek Harper to Chicago for Nick Vanos, and their own pick back. A heavy price to pay as Harper is still a quality player but this gives Ryan the ability to control his own destiny. Also, he’s going to find a buyer for Cliff Robinson & Reggie Theus and get more picks and assets back. Tough to hate on the GM exhibit Ryan put on over the course of this past weekend.

For me, best is most impactful. Either to make a team better or to set up a tank job.

I think for this season, that is the Spurs and Warriors trade. The Warriors were looking to get their pick back. The Spurs were a top the West again, but were weak in the post. This version of the Spurs was susceptible to a team that could pound the ball in the post. With this trade, they are no longer weak at any singular position. On the other end, the warriors complete their tear down by getting their pick back. Now sending as many assets for future assets, they were able to improve their situation to rebuilding another contender.

I think it's a tie between the aforementioned Spurs-Warriors trade & the Hawks-Trailblazers trade.

Spurs-Warriors has been discussed ad nauseum. Eazy REALLY wanted and needed an impact player down low, and that's what he's getting with Tom Chambers. An incredible offensive weapon to really punch people when MJ is resting. The Warriors get their pick, which really facilitated the rest of the sell off he had going on. So if this trade didn't go down, so many other Warriors trades would not have gone down (at least to the extent that they have). Definitely an impactful move.

On the other side, the Trailblazers FINALLY acquire Kevin McHale. Wig has been persistently after this man since he was a young Buck, and even though he's on an expensive deal and much older... Wig gets his dominant big that he's been looking for (could've had with Thurl!!!). I am absolutely shocked that Wig gave up the Knicks pick, although I think he did want to sell high since the Knicks will be getting Gminski back and that should THEORETICALLY improve the Knicks in the standings. On the other side, Ryan and the Hawks are doing a great job reseting after a 1-yr run at contending that unfortunately got derailed by injuries. That core was about to get MUCH more expensive next off-season, and older to boot... so Ryan is cashing in now, starting with McHale. Good move!

I think the Bullets did a great job on day 60 acquiring talent for cheap. He just sent points to acquire Bill Laimbeer and World B Free to balance out his lineup even more around Magic.

How are you defining "best"?
They did not have to mortgage their future and are making a genuine run at the conference title. Whenever you take a low-risk, high-reward swing in sim it is good. Fortune favors the bold.

What impact will this trade have?
The Bullets GM is an active one in the league so their activity will easily recoup those points, and it is just a moderate tax bill so I really like their aggressiveness to solidify their lead in their division.

It's one of the best players in the game today for one of the best of the future.
This trade makes the Kings a very real contender in the West and allows the Hawks the softest of resets by giving them a true star to build around without having to hope for the lotto.
