Good morning. Thank you for joining us. We appreciate you being here for the San Antonio Spurs Presser.
Before we talk about X’s and O’s, I want to take a breath and look at that trophy sitting on the table. To see 'San Antonio Spurs' etched into that gold..... it’s humbling. For years, this city stayed patient. You stuck by us through the ups and downs, the heartbreaks, and the almosts.
Beating a Milwaukee Bucks team that played with that much heart in a six game war, it changes you. It teaches you exactly what it costs to win. To the fans who lined the streets for the parade, we saw the tears in your eyes. We carry that with us. We are deeply honored to be your champions, and we don't take a single second of this for granted.
While we are humbled by the achievement, we are not satisfied. And that starts with our Finals MVP.
If you walked into the gym during training camp this month, you wouldn't have seen a man resting on his laurels. Michael Jordan treated every practice like Game 7. He didn't just show up, he dominated the air space. He’s spent the summer in the lab refining his post game and his defensive rotations.
There was a moment in camp where he dove for a loose ball during a simple 3-on-3 drill, up by ten in a practice jersey and shouted at his teammates to pick up the intensity. When your superstar remains that hungry, it filters down to everyone. Michael, right now is the most driven human being I’ve ever been around. He’s set a standard in camp that is, quite frankly, terrifying for the rest of the league.
To stay at the top, you have to be honest about your weaknesses. We had to say goodbye to two brothers in arms, Mike Gminski and Darryl Dawkins. Their veteran presence was the foundation of our title run, and they will always have a home in San Antonio.
We knew we had to get more dynamic. We were aggressive some might say bold in trading up to draft Danny Manning. Danny is a winner who understands the sacrifice it takes to reach the summit. Watching him run the floor with Michael and Isiah during camp......it’s a vision of the future.
We also added Sam Vincent to the fold. Sam brings a quiet, professional confidence to our bench. He’s a glue guy with a high level motor who ensures that when our starters sit, the pressure on the opponent never drops.
We feel we have built a roster that is both versatile and relentless. We have the skill to out finesse you and the grit to out work you.
Isiah Thomas, the soul of this team is playing with a serene confidence that only a champion possesses.
Michael Jordan, the reigning finals MVP. He’s faster, stronger, and more focused than he was in June.
Chris Mullin is the ultimate weapon. His shooting forces defenses to pick their poison.
Rodney McCray is our silent assassin on the defensive end. He does the work no one sees but everyone feels.
Mark West with Gminski and Dawkins gone is now our anchor. He’s embraced the role of protecting the rim with a renewed ferocity.
Danny Manning our rookie phenom, his versatility is going to give opposing coaches nightmares.
Sam Vincent, the veteran stabilizer rounds out what we feel is one of the most dangerous backcourts in the league right now.
The NBA is a different world when you're the hunted rather than the hunter. The Rockets, the Pistons, the Celtics, the Bucks, they’re all coming for us. We respect them. We’ve been where they are.
But we aren't looking back. We are humbled by the ring, but we are confident in the work. With Isiah and Michael leading this group, we don't just expect to compete, we expect to dictate the terms of every game we play. We’ve tasted what it’s like to be at the top of the mountain, and quite frankly, we have no intention of coming down. To stay at the top we have to work even harder. We now It's going to be tough but win or lose I know these guys will do their best and that's all you can ask for.
If you have any questions I answer them the to the best of my ability. Maybe I get my full 5 points this time around.
