GM Power Rankings

Howdy Howdy beautiful people. It’s ya boi BigDaddyD back at it again with another power rankings article. Since all of my other power rankings articles are so incredibly awesome and accurate, I thought I’d try a different type of power rankings. GM Power Rankings. I created my own formula that is simply just the best formula ever created in the history of everything. I took in multiple factors like win percentage, playoff appearances, etc. to try and figure how each GM stacks up against each other. And boy I gotta tell ya, I can see some GMs being upset with where they landed on this list. And that’s exactly what I want to do. I want to hurt your feelings and make you feel bad about where you’re at in these rankings. The number in parenthesis is the final score they received. Any teams with the same score had a tiebreaker of overall win percentage. So if two teams finish with 5 points and Team A has a win percentage of .400 and Team B has a win percentage of .350, then Team A will be higher in the rankings.

So without further ado, let us get down into the nitty gritty of it all and see what my formula says about each GM.

#23- Digiskunk Philadelphia, 76ers (0): No disrespect to Gary but this seems like a no brainer. 1 of 3 teams to finish with a final score 0 in the BigDaddyD GM rankings formula. With the lowest win percentage in the league, combined with no playoff appearances and no winning seasons, it’s no secret that Digiskunk would end up at the bottom of these rankings. His inactivity doesn’t help his case either. He tends to show up for like 4 things during the offseason and then disappears until the next offseason. If he ever decides to try in this league, he could have a good shot at making the playoffs for once.

#22- TheSyndicate, Atlanta Hawks (0): Our second GM to finish with a score of 0. He only finishes slightly ahead of Digiskunk because he has a slightly better winning percentage. While he did inherit a really bad team from a GM who was also very inactive, The Syndicate has shown to also be MIA for periods of time. I like to think of the three teams that finished with a score of 0, he would be the one to be able to turn it around if he actually tries. He did have his best season yet this past season so maybe we are starting to see him turn this franchise around and finally be looking to compete.

#21- #78, Houston Rockets (0): Our final team with 0 points in the BigDaddyD GM Rankings formula. This team isn’t far from reaching the playoffs for the first time in this league. Just as with the previous GMs mentioned, it comes down to being active. If they just make some moves and gameplan properly, we could be looking at a playoff team. They’ve had a couple of .500 seasons but just couldn’t get over that hump. Just need to see a little bit of life from this GM and we may see them competing and making some playoff runs.

#20- Keepit100- Dallas Mavericks (6): K100 started off the new league on a strong note and then just fell off for a while. They were never the worst in their division but they were flirting with being at the bottom for a while. They finally made it back to the playoffs this past season and look primed to do it again. They took the Warriors to game 7 so hopefully they can build off of that. If they can get 1 or 2 good signings in Free Agency, we could definitely see this team make a solid run this coming season. If they can keep this up, I don’t see them being towards the bottom of this list for long.

#19- BigDaddyD, Seattle Supersonics (7): Now here’s a guy who really should be listed as the #1 GM, but that just might be me being biased towards him. But, nonetheless, he finishes at #19. It looked like we had something special when we were able to draft Wilkins and then had 3 seasons in a row of making the playoffs, with one of them taking the Kings to Game 7 even after two major injuries. Then it all fell apart again and we’re right back in the rebuild. Really, the only thing keeping us from being at the bottom of this list is probably the inactivity from the other GMs. Hopefully this new rebuild works out for us but we still have a long way to go.

#18- AngryBanana, Boston Celtics (10): The man, the myth, the legend. Rumor has it that we were all part of something league that AB destroyed. But that must have been a different timeline with my formula. He’s the king of the First round of the playoffs as every season he’s made the playoffs, he’s won the first round. Last season was his best season yet so it will be interesting to see if he can carry that momentum into this next season. Wilkins and Hakeem are a great start for building a contending team.

#17- Xist2Inspire, Utah Jazz (10): Kiki leaving was easily the biggest blow to this team. It’s hard to replace his scoring but they seem to be moving back in the right direction. A little inconsistent over the years as they’ve been in and out of the playoffs each season but finally got their first playoff series win. Curious to see how they handle this offseason and if they decide to make a splash move to try and get themselves deeper into the playoffs next season.

#16- JNR, San Diego Clippers (10): JNR has had so much potential during these last few seasons. Should have had one more playoff appearance but the West was such a gauntlet that year that he just missed out on it. Still, He always seemed to be just out of reach of truly competing. This run may be coming to an end soon but I really hope he doesn’t throw in the towel too soon.

#15- DrKavarga, Phoenix Suns (11): This ranking shows that I took the entire body of work into account when doing these rankings. DrK started off with three straight seasons in the playoffs, winning a playoff series in two of them. But since then, they haven’t come close to the playoffs. It’s no coincidence that this happened once he got rid of Magic Johnson. So with that, are we seeing the true GM that he is or has he just been patient and waiting for the right time to strike before becoming a contender again.

#14- Tbone963, Detroit Pisstons (14): This GM had pretty much the opposite career of the Suns. Missed the playoffs the first 3 seasons, but since then, they haven’t missed the playoffs. He just needs to figure out how to put it all together and get deeper into the playoffs. He’s been making the right moves to stay competitive for so long now, just hope he cashes in before his window closes

#13- PaulyP, Indiana Pacers (17): Our first GM with a career win percentage over .500. I definitely thought in the early seasons that he would have won at least one championship with how well his team played, but with having Joe Barry Carroll and Adrian Dantley, it proved that without much depth or at least better starters around them, it’s hard to win. Lately he seems to be rebuilding and I don’t expect it to be too much longer before he starts making deep playoff runs again.

#12- JLmarines, Cleveland Cavaliers (18): Now here’s a GM who just knows how to get into the playoffs. He just doesn’t know what to do when he gets there. 5 playoff appearances in 7 seasons but only 2 playoff series wins. But, nonetheless, the Cavaliers always seem to find a way to win. They’re never flashy, they just play like a team and win their games.

#11- LogPMess, Chicago Bulls (18): If not for those pesky Bucks, the Bulls likely have at least 1, maybe 2, shots at a championship. Before this past season, it really looked like this team would be a perennial playoff team. They clearly took the season off to rebuild and get younger. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have another bad season this upcoming season but I don’t anticipate them being down for long. Logan is too good of a GM to be out of the playoffs for multiple seasons.

#10- EazyP, San Antonio Spurs (20): This team stayed at the bottom for a long time, being patient and waiting for the right time. Winning the Michael Jordan lottery was huge plus they got Kiki in free agency. Add that to the already young talent they had like Isiah Thomas and Mark Aguirre and this team was bound to be a contender in no time. They still haven’t made it to the big dance even with all that talent but it could be coming soon. Their main issue is having so much talent that some guys don’t get enough playing time so it may be hard to trade them for a big haul.

#9- NYMagicGarret, New York Knicks (22): Even though the Knicks are in the playoffs more often than not, this team just can’t stay consistent. They had multiple opportunities to try and bring home the trophy and they just couldn’t get it done. They’ve had seasons where they looked to be tanking and then they end up in the playoffs and vice versa. Part of their success has come from the East being weak at times but at the end of the day, you have to win your games. And the Knicks know how to win their games. It’s obviously tough to win it all, but the Knicks seem to have a really tough time with it. But if they are able to add another stud player, they could be looking to compete with the Bucks in the conference finals again.

#8- Greepleairport, Golden State Warriors (22): If there ever was a team that hasn’t won a championship yet that I really wanted to see win one, it’s the Golden State Warriors. Multiple first round byes, made it to the conference finals twice, had two 60+ win seasons. And he did this all while the Pacific Division was the gauntlet of the league. They have plenty of talent on their team to make another deep run in the playoffs so I really hope they find a way to break through and bring home a trophy.

#7- Jedihero, Denver Nuggets (23) : Now even though they haven’t done much the past few seasons, this team did win a championship and that immediately puts them ahead of most GMs. They tore it completely down after they won that boat and have been trying to get back to the big dance ever since. Maybe they’re on their way as they had back to back 40+ win seasons, or maybe they are hitting their peak again. Their team is on the older side so I have to imagine they try to make the push sooner rather than later.

#6- RealPelicansFan, New Jersey Nets (26): Our first champion. Our first king. Our first lord of all the land. It started to look like that first season was a bit of a fluke but they turned it around really quickly and now look to be competing for a long time. That broken leg to Fat Lever couldn’t slow them down for too long. This team’s championship window is still open at least for a few more seasons so hopefully they can get past the Bucks and the Knicks and join the ranks of the Bucks as the only multiple time champion.

#5- Darth Vegito, Kansas City Kings (27): Four straight seasons of 50+ wins is very impressive, to go along with a championship, taking down the Bucks in 7 games. But this team is too good to stay down for long. RFA was kind to them and they seem to be making all the right moves to put themselves back in a position to make a deep playoff run again. And they are young enough to where they can compete for a really long time.

#4- MikeLowry, Washington Bullets (27): I gotta admit, MikeLowry is one of my favorite GMs. I love how he is always finding new ways to gameplan for his opponents. Minus this past season and the first season, he always seemed like he was going to be a problem for the East, and he was. Again watching him make changes on the fly is really fun to watch. Most GMs like to throw out the same gameplan and hope it carries them all the way, not MikeLowry. He will try to find any and every way to beat you. I’m always rooting for him to win a championship.

#3- LazyTitanSmash, Los Angeles Lakers (39): Magic Johnson always makes teams look better than they are but even so, this team found a way to get better every season. They went from 47 wins, to 55 to 57, to 62, to finally 64 wins and a championship. 3 time General Manager of the Year is more than enough proof that he belongs in the top 3 of this list. And they aren’t looking to become complacent any time soon. They know they have quite a few great seasons from Magic left and they will be looking to take full advantage of that.

#2- WigNosy, Portland Trailblazers (49): One of two teams to make the playoffs in every season, the BluntForceTraumaBlazers are always a force to be reckoned with. The most impressive thing about this team is that they are never really elite in any one category. They just know how to get the entire team to contribute. They installed a culture and got everyone to buy in. You never see them have a top scorer or top defender but they play as a team and they know how to find their opponents’ weaknesses and expose them. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle this offseason with all their RFAs but I have no doubt they will be back in the playoffs.

#1- IamQuailMan, Milwaukee Bucks (66): Man, I really have to say nice things about Doug? Ok, fine here it goes. The only GM to win multiple championships, 6 seasons in a row with a first round bye in the playoffs, 5 of those finishing as the #1 seed, five 60+ win seasons. And the most impressive thing was when they won their first championship, they decided to blow it up and start all over again. And that didn’t even last one season as they found themselves in the conference finals the very next season. They no longer have Kevin McHale so it will be interesting to see how this team performs moving forward. But if I was betting on them, I’d bet that they are competing for the #1 seed once again.

Thank you so much for being here with me on this journey. I hope you enjoyed this and I look forward to doing these in the future. If you have any qualms with the list, too bad. The formula is perfect and there’s that we need to do to change it!

OBJECTIVE: 2000+ words, 6 points.
SUBJECTIVE: Article covered each team in the league, so it is comprehensive - got to give it a couple of points there. A little more information about what contributed to the points in the team rankings would have been nice; this seems a little bit opaque (to be clear, I don't need the formula itself, but I would like to see what goes into it - for example, "playoff appearances" or "titles" or "All League Players" or "Trade History" or "Draft History" or whatever), and I didn't feel "inspired" by what I read (with the possible exception of his self-deprecation, that was a nice touch). So I'll give it +2 points for subjectivity on the basis of applying to the whole league, but what it had in breadth I felt it lacked in depth.
