1 Point Away - Lakers Presser 1986

The elephant in the room, of course, is coming just one point away from winning my first ship. Magic is pissed too—he doesn’t care about winning a second straight MVP if it doesn’t come with a championship. He’s pissed he let Doc Rivers get that last second shot off.
That being said, I am very proud of the finals run my guys put together last year…they played their hearts out and I think we have to squad to win a title so we are running it back!
After dropping 142 points on the best defense since the league restart, we’re finally committing to Magic at point. We’ve got the scoring to support him there, and the plan is to finally make that move full-time.
For not hitting a home run in free agency, I’m actually feeling pretty good about this year’s prospects.
I’d love to move Mark Eaton and/or Paul Pressey, but since they’re on RFA contracts, that’s not happening. So the core of Donaldson, Ruland, Dantley and Magic are locked in, that want another shot at the title as a team.
The contracts on Ruland, Eaton, Pressey, and Rodney McCray are all great.
And honestly, the brightest part of the offseason was picking up McCray. He’s a defensive powerhouse and exactly the kind of SF we need to free Magic for full-time point guard duties. The only downside is that McCray might not be fully ready this year, which makes him a potential major trade chip. But I really like him—if he just lives up to his defensive potential, we’ll be in great shape.
Plus, Ruland, Donaldson, and Pressey are all set for significant improvement. That’s a lot of guys taking a step forward on a team that was literally one point away from a championship. Barring major injuries, I feel really good about this group.

What would you have done differently on that last defensive possession of the the finals matchup-wise?

SECOND straight MVP? Bruh, I know you know we lost by 1 point, so I'm pretty sure you can count to SIX(th straight MVP).
- Magic Johnson
You say you're running it back, but it sounds like half the team is for sale. Are you trying to get under the cap again this year or is winning the 'ship the bigger priority yet?

They did well as a team. Magic should have blocked or altered the shot. I feel like it was just luck at that point.

Damn I didn't realize he'd won it with the Suns since the begin of the new PBSL!
Teams not for sale. I planning on moving, picks and Rodney McCray. I got the Wayne Robinson contract to pair up with McCray and/or the picks and finally go into the tax.

Chet Youbetcha, Dimmadome News: Are you reacting at all to Magic taking what looks like a slight step back in Pre-season? Do you think that will sustain or just a preseason thing?

The question I think the entire league wants to know is how do you respond to such a heartbreaking end of the finals, what did you tell your team in the locker room after the game?

You came very close to winning it all, and the Bucks already made some moves to change the look of their team.
How do you feel about your chances to run it back with the same team?
How eager are you to make a move to improve?

It was heartbreaking but not on the team...They played their hardest, the bucks just had a few more pieces. I let the team know I was proud of them!
Not 100 percent sure where I could have improved my team...greeple keeps telling me I shouldn't have cut my scrub y/y but maybe instead of picking yellow scrub yellows on max contracts I should have just gone with the best y/y available...I was looking to pick up a cheap g/g but I ended up not having any points to trade with the contracts...

I'm always looking to improve but there aren't many pieces to move.... I anticipate at least one major trade but mostly I'm happy to run it back...

...And I'll take the bait. From the jump, your goal was to get under the cap last season. When that's your goal, you can't expect to win a 'ship. I didn't say shit about your y/y's, YOU said I said you should keep your y/y's, I said you thought you could get under cap AND win a 'ship and I said you were too worried about cap and not enough about your chances at a ship. I don't even know who's on your team then or now besides magic johnson lol
