Warriors S5 Presser: We Don't Have Moses Malone Anymore

The 1984 NPBSL playoffs were just as devastating, if not more so, than the 1983 playoffs. We were favorites to come out of the west two seasons in a row, and we fell short both times. We didn’t even make the conference finals this time.
I was a very sad panda who cried real panda tears.
It was time for drastic change in Golden State. We could have pushed forward and been a dangerous team once again, slightly worse than the year before, netting 50 wins? Maybe 55? And then falling out of the playoffs in a 1st or 2nd round exit. It was not a season I cared to have. So the only logical move was to find a new home for Moses, one where he has a chance to win a ring before he starts exiting his prime years.
I had lots of wonderful conversations with league GMs trying to figure out a good spot for Moses. Every once in a while Parish got asked about, too. And at the end of the day, we’re open to just about anything right now, because as soon as we traded Moses, NO ONE wanted to sign with us. It was a sobering experience.
With all the emo vibes out of the way, our future is bright and more opportunities are upon us. We have ammo to get active on the trade market, and we turned Moses into future All Star and two-time 3 point champion Darrell Griffith. We think he has potential that has yet to be tapped, and we cannot wait to uncork his talents in the Bay. We expect him to be the new focal point of the Warriors in the post-Malone era.
Besides DG, we’re open to all kinds of possibilities, so don’t be afraid to give the GS Warriors a call this season. Feel free to give us a call (except the Lakers- we’ll call YOU).
Now, do you have any questions?

Mark Magnolia, Marmot Magazine: Going into the season, do you still have a plan to compete and possibly make moves before the deadline? Or is this a year to sit back, reflect, and start building for the future?

GWR: Despite the playoff failures, Moses still positioned himself as a top 3 player in the league. Did you explore alternate rebuilds around him as the center before going the route you ultimately did?

Our future is yet to be decided. Our preseason was predictably average. We think our best players did not fully tap in to their potential, though. We'd like to see how things play out after a few sims and go from there.

We would have loved to have traded Parish but the market had devalued him to an alarming degree, in my opinion. Had we gotten an acceptable offer for Parish, we would have slid Moses back to C. With both on the team, though, Moses was the more versatile player to slide to the 4, because Parish is still a starting caliber C on any team in the league.
Our future hinged on UFA 1, though. If we stole a Kiki like the Spurs, we would have run it back, no question. We really thought if anyone was going to turn down a supermax, it was Larry Bird, but we bet wrong and signed no big new talent. When we couldn't even retain David Thompson, our cap space was zapped, and we knew it would be difficult to add talent and made the big move away from Moses. With big panda tears shed.

Steve Duin, the Oregonian…
You mentioned “the market had devalued Parish to an alarming degree…” any concerns the market is correct and you have overvalued (and possibly overpaid) your players? If not, what makes you confident others will change their minds and reassess his value in a direction more in line with your evaluation?

Chet Youbetcha, Dimmadome News: Can you compare the Delmar and Moses experience now that both are done? Did you cut bait on Moses sooner based on the Delmar experience?

People are still knocking for Parish is the thing. If I don’t get an acceptable offer, I don’t have any problem keeping him. I think his overall numbers suffered standing next to Moses and I think his performance in the coming sims will demonstrate that.
…and if I’m wrong, we’ll, I’ve been wrong before!

Yes there are comparisons, definitely. I shipped both out when they were 29 or 30, smack in their primes. The problem both times that I went deep enough into my build without any assets to supplement it, and no clear trade routes to enhance the build around Moses.
I’ll always love my twin towers build, but it fizzled, and the only decent offers I fielded were for Moses, so he went first.
When I moved Delmar, I moved him after I moved another piece, and as soon as I did that worse offers for Delmar rolled in, so i thought it was best to set a high standard of return for my best piece to keep trade vultures at bay. We’ll see how successful that endeavor was

DG is a very interesting pivot away from Moses because he is also ready to compete, and doesn't really give you a rebuild timeline.
How do you intend to add depth that can take you over the top?

We view DG as a means to stay competitive while our future starts to clear up. While it would have been nice to pair up Moses and DG, it was not an option. The same issue we had with building around Moses, we'll have trying to build around DG, too. We're subject to the free agent market or returns on any other players we may be able to trade.

What message do you have for GS fans after trading Moses away, a move you kinda had to make?

Justin Bieber, WWE.com: Based on your recent preseason results, are you planning to be active in the trading market? If so, what position are you looking to add? Who will suck more this year K100 or AB?

It was fun while it lasted but unfortunately we couldn't bring home a ring. With Parish's injury in Game 6 of the conference finals in '83, and Magic Johnson playing with a real team behind him last year, Moses and the rest just wasn't enough. We're sorry we didn't bring home the gold, but we knew it was time to fold and look to the future. We wish Moses nothing but the best and a successful run in NYC.

We need to see how things shake out after a few sims to have a more clear direction in the trade market, but we do anticipate being active there. we have some key pieces here that may be more valuable elsewhere. We just don't know what to expect besides being worse than last year.
It's been a while since K100 has been competitive, but he's put together a decent squad in Dallas this year. I expect K100 to sweep in head-to-head matchups with AB this year.

Came all the way over here to ask some questions about Moses. The big apple is buzzin. He looks good in blue and orange. Sorry, we are very appreciative. So, what can we expect from the Chairman of the Boards?
Is he as good as advertised?

Do you see Perish on your team at the end of this season?

Ya know, when Johnny Moore was a free agent, we dreamed of pairing his backcourt talent with Moses dominating in the front court. That vision can now be fully realized. With Moses back at his natural C position, I think you can expect him to finish with a double-double and another all star caliber season. He may have lost his purple, but his true talent will not decline until his mid 30s at the earliest. His potential is so high that he's a 20+ scorer and 8+ rebounder until he's y/y and ready to retire.

I'll put it this way - he'll wear a Lakers jersey over my dead Fryeing body at the end of this season
