Celtics Expedited presser

I had a whole thing typed up on my computer and alas won’t be able to post it because I can’t reach it in time. Sad, sad, to Fryeing bad. Seems to be my luck with how this off season had gone too…

To start things out I finally moved gates. He was never meant to be an alpha on a team, and I kept trying to make him one. He is doing great in DC though and I wish him the best. We got Currin in that deal who we flipped for Fly Williams. I have like Fly for a while, where I actually signed him in RFA - but Ed matched. So that’s cool. We also were able to send out Dyson, who we liked but realized he was not on the timeline we had with Booget and Lew, for Hood-Schifino. This funny enough was almost the same deal we had with the Blazers last season before he traded with someone else. So that’s about as far as the good from the offseason goes.

Now the bad. We start out with the draft. I tanked after trading AG because our team was shit before it. I position myself to get a top 5 pick, maybe even getting lucky in the lotto. Well, I didn’t. I got the opposite. I moved from five to seven and decided to move the pick for Cottrill, a pending RFA. Then I moved on and said it’s ok, I got UFA. WELL THATS WHERE I GOT <expletive deleted> AGAIN. My whole goal was to get booger back then maybe a PG with a lucky bid. Booger went to the Bulls, and I can’t blame him. He said he wanted to go to a better team, and the bulls were that. So ultimately this is a case study of why you shouldn’t tank. You will get absolutely screwed over - unless you’re the Spurs.

This season isn’t a disaster though. We have some really good players and a well balanced young team. I’m looking forward to a season that hopefully ends in a playoff run and some good development from my core of Lew, Hopd-Schifino, and Fly. Anyways with that I have to hurry and do a roster before the sim.

Kessler
Hood
Lew
Cottrill
Fly

Losing Booger in FA was obviously a tough one, but do you think you still have the building blocks for a new contender with the guys still in Boston? If you had to beef up one position, which would it be?

Yeah. It was not a good thing to have happen. His position was always slightly log jammed. If we brought him back, we would have moved him to PF eventually I think.

Yeah, I think this build is still viable. This season it has to be because I don’t have my pick. If I don’t compete and don’t like my build though, I have three first rounds next season that should all be decent so I’ll pull that trigger I haven’t been afraid to do in the past.

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: Sorry about Booger. Since question answer deadline is sim 2 or something like that, what was the original draft that you couldn't get to like? As someone who had to edit their presser, I'd still love to read it.

Yeah, until the second sim you can ask/answer questions.

I will answer your second question in the next response...

GM Angrybanana is walking to the podium and checks notes to see if paying to move to Boston was worth it…

Angrybanana: The original idea behind moving to Boston was to get out of the small market OKC and get into a larger market. The thought was with the larger market comes the pathway to getting good players on good deals, and a better chance to both retain your players while being competitive in getting external FAs… This would then lead to better opportunities to go to the post season as well as getting championships. While I can say yes, I have achieved a championship since moving to the bean town, little else has gone my way in relations to the move in the first place…

Anyways this is all to say were back to having another edition of A SAD AB(ostonian).

Last season was rough. We went into it knowing it was make or break. We had what we felt was a good core between AG, Booger, and Lew. However, we have grown to be apprehensive when it came to any team that we rolled out with Gates, as he had been more of a snake oil salesman then a true core player to build around. This season was no different it appeared too. Even with arguably the best core around Gates, we struggled out the gate(s). We saw the writing on the wall and pivoted. We had a few talks in place, but nothing felt quite right for Gates. Then I was able to make a move with the Wizards that I think was the best for both sides. Gates finally could play on a team that was not relying on him to be the best player, and I got a good core piece that became more later. This lead to the tanking. Which I thought was done pretty well. I was not outright tanking, because I wanted to see what I had in Lew and Booger. I liked the results, but knew I needed to build on that team this offseason.

The first hypothetical point I was going to do that was with my draft pick. I was slotted to be a pretty high pick. Then two teams sky rocketed in the lotto and that should have been the first sign of this season not going well… So I did what I always mange, and pivoted. I traded the pick for a player that I thought would help for depth in Cottrill, thinking he would be a solid bench player heading to RFA next season. During this time too, I also boosted my roster with more complimentary players. I flipped Maci Currin (apart of the Gates deal) for Fly Williams, a player I signed in RFA and Ed took back, to go with Hood-Schifino for Dyson. I like Dyson and Currin both a lot, but knew they needed to be moved to compliment Lew and Booger better. So I felt really good about the team going into UFA. I had a pretty complimentary roster, only needing to get Booger back and hopefully a competent PG. Even the PG was not needed given Fly could also play PG I think and be fine.

Then UFA happened. I lost Booger to the Bulls, who went with the better team… I get it, I did it to myself with tanking and what not. I also offered Booger a five year max, but did not give a high enough % I guess. Truly I don’t know that would have made a difference though given he wanted to go to the better team. I should have also had contingency plans for this, and had a few bids for guys with the cap space I had to build the team up in the event Booger did not come back. Let this be a lesson to newer GMs. Tanking doesn’t always lead to a better situation… I manage to get worse in relation to what I should be this season, because I went for the draft pick. Oh well, Lady Luck hates the Irish I guess. Well, I took it in stride. I signed a few project players and one player I like is Mobius.

I still think this team is in a good position, then again I have thought that in the past and we have been dog shit bad. Gates has been changed out as our crux player with Lew I think. However, Lew has already dissapointed in some ways. I expected him to develop into an offensive beast in the draft given his pedigree, but he is quickly getting passed by other players in that draft (Rainwater particularly). I do think the three of Fly, Hood-Schifino, and Lew are a competent core that will get us to the playoffs. I then have a player in Cottrill I think we will move, with the excess cap space, for another player I think will improve this roster more in a complimentary way hopefully. We did not do well in the pre-season, but I think this team is a playoff team that can win a round even or so. The guys are young and hopefully have an appetite for winning.

I am thinking of paying for training as well, but IDK. I am stuck between keeping points for an impending tax bill soon, and the idea that I may pump points into players that will go to another team like Booger. I could pump some points in Fly, but he may be good where he is at. If I make a trade that is in the works, there could be some point pumping there, but alas I can’t do a midseason point TC anymore so meh.

IDK. Maybe I wind up blowing this all up again next offseason since I have three first round picks next season… i will do my best to be competitive either way because the Bucks have my pick and have not messaged me back about my pick...

Also, I am now the new media coordinator. FUN!!! Not really, IDK. So if you need points counted for something specific, let me know and I can do what I can. I am also maybe the sim Vegas guy still too? I need to maybe do that today/tonight.

Starting Five:
Fly Williams
Raphael Cottrill
Lew Alcindor
Jaylen Hood-Schfino
Thomas Walker
