Good morning everybody and welcome in to the #FillYoPouch Presser. This time around we came prepared and have food ordered beforehand. So please help yourself to the mashed potatoes bar, red beans and rice, and of course, some chicky chicky parm.

First, we’ll talk about last season. We understand this organization does not want to be one of the bottom tier teams but that’s what we were last season. No way to sugarcoat it. We were bad. We had a team meeting late in the season with the players we knew were going to be here this season and they agreed it would best for us to try and get a better lottery pick. And it worked! We got two fantastic players in the draft and we are definitely excited to see them develop with our other young players. Pizarro and Longar have all the qualities to become studs in the league and we believe they can build great core pieces with Lee and Bender. We will be looking to add some veterans this season and next and ideally by year 3 for them we’re looking at competing in the playoffs. It’s been a bumpy road so far and will continue to be one but I assure you all, there are much better days in the future. As long as our players keep buying in to the #FillYoPouch way, there is no limit to what this team will be able to accomplish.

Now to address the elephant in the room, it’s no secret we tried our best to trade Ayo during the off-season but his contract proved to be too much for other teams to want to take on. I don’t blame them, we don’t even want it. But we spoke with Ayo and he’s ready to forget about it and focus on the season. We will give him every opportunity to succeed and we are happy to have him help develop the young guys.

We will now open it to any questions you may have.

Chet Youbetcha, Dimmadome News: I like that you are owning up to the Ayo deal and making the best of it. Making the most of your early mistakes is great to see. Who is the player in your current rebuild that you are most excited about? Are you planning to train any of them?

*Speaking through a mouthful of mashed potatoes*

You had some good luck this offseason and had a boost in the lottery, also gaining another early pick through a trade. What are your long term plans for these 2 young guys you drafted? Are they going to be your cornerstones for a rebuild?

Hot Damn these are good potatoes.

First step in correcting a mistake is admitting you made a mistake and I am not afraid to admit it. I should have talked to my mentor before submitting a contract like that and he probably could have helped me but this is part of my learning process.

The player I’m most excited about is Tony Lee. He’s been great for the two seasons I’ve been here and I felt he really took a step forward last season. We were able to resign him in RFA and after hearing nobody put a bid in for him, he’s ready to show that everybody in the league made a mistake. He’s somebody that can score at will and I think if we can work on his defense a bit he’s definitely gonna be a problem for any team he faces.

We are planning on doing some training but I don’t have the answer to that just yet. We’re going to look at it one more time after this presser and see what we can/need to do to help further develop our young players

I’m glad you’re enjoying the mashed potatoes. I had them at my wedding and it was probably my favorite part. Outside of marrying my wife and then ripping my shirt off in a moshpit with my bffs.

We were very excited to find out we made two big jumps in the lottery. That trade for the wizards pick ended up being HUGE (holds arms spread out wide) for us. We’re looking forward to seeing Longar and Pizarro be core pieces for us.

As far as a plan, right now we’re looking to see if either of them can make the transition to PG. Having 4 potentially top tier guards seems like a good problem to have so we just need to figure out how to get the best out of all of them. We may have some games where we put three of them out there at the same time and let them make some magic happen. Their play on defense is going to dictate who gets more playing time though. And there may come a point where it makes more sense to trade one away.

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: Where did the Fill Yo Pouch catchphrase come from and what does it mean?

The catchphrase originates from a friend of mine. The Pelicans typically went with the #FlockUp phrase but I wanted to change that when I got here. When a pelican is on the hunt for their prey, the way they eat is by diving towards the water and filling up their pouch with as much water as they can in the hopes that they get food in there too. They do this as many times as it takes for them to have their fill as well as bring food back to their offspring. This is very similar to my approach. Trying fill up this team with as much “water” as we can and hopefully we get to eat. And we won’t stop after one attempt. We’ll keep trying until we feel full. But I gotta warn everybody, we have some big stomachs over here so don’t expect us to stop eating anytime soon
