Where's my money?
The Kevon Looney Chronicles
The Kevon Looney Chronicles
When he hears he’s been offered a max contract:
What a contract offer! The Hawks came out of nowhere to offer me that bag.
After a few weeks into the season:
I'm killing it over here with the Hawks. They feed me the ball constantly, and I'm putting up numbers I've never seen before in my career—20-point games. You can see the potential this point guard has every day, dropping dimes left and right. If we just had anyone else on our team, we'd be competitive and ready to go.
After two months into the season:
My problem is, I don't really fit in with this group. They don't listen to the same music as me, they don't understand my references, and the coach is still teaching them fundamentals. I've never been the best player on my team, and I really shouldn't be. I don't like it; it's not my game. My game is on the glass and as a defensive stopper. Making me the focus of an offense is a mistake. I'm not sure what the Hawks were thinking.
Before the trade deadline:
We aren't winning any games. It doesn't make sense for me to keep going out and putting out 100%. What's the point? What's best for the team is to lose and get a top-five pick in the next upcoming draft. They need to get me out of here. I don't know how to lose games, and I'm not about to start now. I've gone to the coaching staff and asked them to put me on the bench.
Looney learns of the trade:
I don't know how the Hawks think I'm only worth a 25-year-old kid who hasn't shown out yet. I've got to be worth more than that. But it's whatever; I'm moving on to a winner. We've got three All-Stars, a Rookie of the Year candidate, and a point guard who's been leading the league in assists for the last couple of years. The best part is I'm not even going to need to do anything on the offensive end. All they're asking me to do is defend the best bigs in the league. Since that was my major role with the Raptors, it shouldn't be a problem for me. I think I'm going to fit like a glove with the Mavs.
Looney learns the league has put his trade under investigation:
What is happening? The league is thinking about changing rules. This feels like when Chris Paul was banned from joining the Lakers. It makes no sense to send me back to the Hawks. The Hawks don't want me or need me, and I'm going to dominate with the Mavs. They say they need to protect the Hawks from themselves. Screw that; I want to win. They better let me go.
Looney learns he’s being shopped for next season:
I learned today that LTS is looking to move me for next season. He says the team just can't afford to stay over the cap any longer. He says he's willing to help me keep my $103 million if I can find a team that's willing to accept it. He says all he wants is $10 million in cash consideration. He says he just needs something, anything, back in return for my contract. He says, of course, teams will come and try to pick me up since I'm playing well and they think I'm super valuable. (You know, since there were calls to change league rules in order to keep me from moving.) He says don't worry about it; I'm sure somebody will come and get you. He says if I'm willing to take less, he'll bring me back, but fat chance at that. I tell him who cares about $10 million; I'll pay the $10 million myself if you just give me the $103 million. He says that's not how the cap works; it's got to come from another team. I'm not worried about it; I'm sure somebody will pick me up. In the meantime, I'm going to keep doing my thing here with the Mavs.
Looney learns the Mavs are opting not to pick up his team option of $103,000,000:
How did I just lose $103 million? No one in the league was willing to give $10 million in cash consideration. LTS said he was also floored; no one was willing to offer anything. He said, here's a list of players he would trade for $10 million in cash consideration right now if it were promised to him at the beginning of next season, no matter what, because they are just that good:
Jonathan Isaac
Devin Vassell
Antonio Gates
Lew Alcindor
Jizzle James
Kamari Brown
Alex Fudge
Daniel Johnson
Trayce Jackson-Davis
Xue Huo
Tennessee Rainwater
Desmond Bane
Mac McClung
Justin Amos
Kel'el Ware
Johnny Davis
Sanford Benfield
Amen Thompson
Scottie S. Sanders
Maxwell Lewis
Delmer Bricker
Bernardo Carrasco
Hoyt Timmerman
Stan Van Gundy
Lauri Markkanen
Pee Wee Kirkland
Sion James
Matthew Falcon
Supreme Cook
Jordan Hawkins
Bones Hyland
Richard Reed
Dick Bender
Herman Cambell
Dennis Funkhouser
Chane Behanan
Charley Quick
A'ja Wilson
Kevin Cross
Breanna Stewart
Nick Claxton
LTS says the league must think you're worse than all these players. And if you want to prove them wrong, bring it in the playoffs. Use it as motivation. Oh, I am. They are going to regret not picking me up and paying me my money. I'm going to make them look foolish in the playoffs. I'm going to make them cry.
Looney makes the playoffs:
I'm going to show the league I'm worth max money. I'm going to show them they made a mistake not sending over cash consideration for me. They don't think I'm worth it; we'll see if they still think that, when I lock down the best bigs in the league. I'm going to grind. I'm going to set hard screens. I'm going to box out with elbows. I'm going to clear the lane so Angel, Scoot, and Dom can fly. I’m bringing home a ship.
