If you are not a fan of anime, then this article is not for you.
So I was sitting at my desk the other day watching anime while working on my Powerrr rankings and realized that there may be some overlap between the two things that take up any empty time I may have in my life through the week. What if there were a one to one comparison between certain GMs and anime characters? I have seen quite a few anime shows now over the past 20, or so, years that I have been watching anime, and think that it is quite entertaining to see the overlap of these two things that I enjoy. I will do my best attempt to pull only one character per anime in an attempt to make it harder on myself. I also hit the word count I wanted to get to before hitting a wall, so I am not going to do every GM. I may do a part two, but I have suggested I would do a part two for other articles, just to never touch the idea again…
Anyways here are a few that I came up with while sitting around being bored, trying to once again fill up the empty time on my hands with two things I enjoy.
IamQuailman Pistons GM - Hisoka (HunterXHunter)
Quail is quite the clown, who always hides behind his creepy appearance and facepaint that tries to scare the children. He also likes to make people uncomfortable by staring at them (or their players) from afar, getting aroused thinking about their potential. This doesn't last for long though, Quail will throw these high potential people away when they get bored of them, or their eyes are set on another target. They also are both considered slimy, where Hisoka has his Bungee gum that sticks to stuff, Doug’s slime is used to stick himself to deals that are always one sided for him.
Dr.Kavarga Bobcats GM- Kuwabara (Yu-Yu Hakusho)
Being a winner earlier in their respective careers (fake basketball GM/ and fighting) lead to a very cocky attitude about how they are right and are the best at doing it. This only leads to them getting dog stomped all over the place after their initial success. They are most known for their love for the orange bits in their life, and acts like they are hot shit even though they haven’t been shit in years. However, their obscure way of looking at the world and their craft ultimately works out decently for them (for the time being at least). Also, much like Kuwabara, Dr.K has no problems telling you how he feels, while being the loudest one to proclaim his thoughts.
JediHero Nuggets GM- Hercule (Dragon Ball Series)
A new guy on the scene that shows up later in the overall where at first you think he is going to be very strong and overpowered only to be a plush doll that is all talk and no bite. He is also goes on to befriend someone that has been around a long time and is very strong but never lives up to their power (AngryBanana) and a loyal dog that is even weaker then him (BigDaddyD).
Garbageman Bulls GM: Saitama (One Punch Man)
The guy that put in the long term work to develop his now OP skills. He is now a GM who can be “lazy” at times (even though he hasn’t done a lazy statistician article in a while) but when he turns it on, you better watch out because you may get smashed in one hit. They both run the universes they are in (Gman in a literal sense since he is the commissioner).
K-100 Grizzlies GM: Escanor (Seven Deadly Sins)
The power when they are at their top can be up their with the most powerful of anyone else they are compared to. However, they must pay for this power by sacrificing any ability of power whenever they are not at their peak and usually are a very weak team. There is no middle ground for them.Their affinity for being weird and unorthodox (like Raphael Gordon at Center) causes others to disregard them as a joke, however it ultimately leads to great results. They will also sacrifice themselves for their hometown’s best chances at winning.
CashCab Hawks GM: Shinji Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
These two have the comparison of having to take on a lot of weight and expectations for the position they are in. While for Shinji he ultimately crashed under the pressure of what his father placed upon him. Hopefully CashCab does not have an equal mental breakdown as a result of the Phil Smith era looking like it is coming to a close lead to an obscure psychedelic trip that confuses everyone about how it got to this point. They always showed the potential to lead their people to the promise land, but ultimately may have just crashed under the pressure of what was placed upon them.
LazyTitanSmash Mavericks GM: Light Yagami (Death Note)
LTS, much like Light, started out as normal individuals that wanted to be great. They find something that can lead them to ultimate power (Dominatrix and the young core), however the power that they think that they posses, or can ultimately poses, leads them to gain a big ego at times. This ego prevents them from potentially living up to their ultimate power. In the Mavericks situation an example is LTS thinking too highly of Candice Parker’s worth last season and not being able to move them prior to RFA. This lead to them overpaying Parker in the process. I can only hope that the end game for LTS is not him laying down on a stairwell due to the one that helped him get his power (Dominatrix Shinigami) turning on him.
BlackSuperman Suns GM: Seto Keiba (Yugioh)
This one is pretty straight forward. Seto and BS tend to take things within the game very seriously, and are always looking towards the end game of trying to beat everyone and being the best. He is constantly trying to pivot himself and make moves that will lead towards either winning in the short or long term plans or that will make him richer. However, his approach to everything can sometimes rub people the wrong way it seems, where his seriousness clashes with others that may be also looking to joke around. Hopefully, he isn’t just concerned about his blue current purple potential dragons, and can finally believe in the heart of the SLOE.
Digiskunk Jazz GM: Gintoki Sakata (Gintama)
The ultimate wild card. This one is pretty straight forward. You just never really know what you are going to get from either one of them. They have both been around for a long time, and will sometimes take long gaps between appearances. However, anytime you do see them, you are sure to get a laugh from them. .The humor is also one that is not always conventional, where they will float between normal humor, to humor based on what others do, and finally stuff that is completely off the wall and so absurd you can only shake your head while chuckling.
PaulyP: Pacers GM: Roy Mustang (Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Both of them have always been considered strong. They also will always show up at the beginning very strong (Pauly with his notorious first sim results that have seemed to sustained way better through the years after getting Herb) just to “flame” out some during the season. They will then come back at the end and show that their strength that was lauded was the real deal and become a problem for anyone they may face, even if they are not strong enough to beat the final boss. They are also very loyal to their subordinates, and in return get high level production out of them.
Eazy P Spurs GM: Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece)
There were a few similarities I felt like I could draw on here between Eazy P and Luffy. One can be how Eazy P is routinely getting deep in the playoffs, and will get knocked back down several times before he wins a championship. You could also compare them with how Luffy gets new transformations like how Eazy P has gone through several championship builds that build off the previous run. But I think the route to go here is how loyal he is to his crew/players. Luffy is very well known for being super loyal to his crew, even derailing whole missions in order to do what he thinks in the best interest of the people closest to him. Equally, Eazy P is one of the most loyal GMs in the league. This guy literally always has someone on his roster that he is working towards the 12 years a Spur plan. I can not think of even one player I have had for over ten years, and this guy has several to his name.
Xist2Inspire Wizards GM: Kakashi (Naruto)
Both of these individuals are incredibly consistent. Kakshi has always been considered a strong ninja in the world of Naruto, where Xist will hold the hardest record I think that there is to beat in the game, going 26 seasons in the playoffs. Both were not always the strongest player in the field, but they were always respected for their strengths and put up a good fight against anyone they were against. They are also both very likable people that will always be willing to offer advice to others to help them to get better.
