Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful(and I stress THOUGHTFUL) answers which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Deadline TODAY Friday 5pm, Sim #6.

Question:
Trade deadline is around the corner...Put together a hypothetical trade that makes sense for one team on the edge of true contention. Why does it make sense and how would it push this team into contention?

Evan Mobley to any team needing either scoring or depth for their bigs. Mobley is still a very good player, who is a high producing g/g (playing better than b/b players currently.) He would be well suited to go to a team that that needs more of a scoring punch, as he can still easily get you 20 ppg. He is also a great player for anyone that feels that their bigs are a little too shallow. He can still start and provide an all around game to compliment mostly any big.

At this point, the Hawks should not be happy with a 23-14 record with how expensive they are. Because they spent all their points on training and are a new GM (which correlates with a low amount of peripheral points earning activity), they are at risk of racking up a huge tax bill of around 136 points. At their current rate of earning, that'd almost definitely mean losing stud Justin Amos after his contract's up.

They went all in this year, but it's time to abort because they're a solid team, but not even top 5 records in the league...and they're in a conference with more losing teams. It's not worth risking the future. Hawks need to prioritize keeping Phil Smith, Justin Amos, and Daniel Johnson (rethink trading him in the offseason, you got lucky he was an RFA and you didn't deal him away before you had a proper eval of player worth).

Instead, I'd say get rid of Kalin Lucas, and here's how....

Even though Lucas is better than Blair, Blair's contract is too long and costly at this point for someone to take. Plus, Lucas is out another month, so he's not going to help add to your win column and scratch out an extra point or two. Pair Lucas with an asset like Benfield so you don't have to send out points (I guess you only have 2) for someone to take on a bad contract (nobody's taking Leroy for free, he's expiring, so he won't get you in long term tax trouble, and he's probably better for you this season because he provides a nice defensive wing partner for Amos). Even if you cut this much salary, you probably will be just short of paying the tax in the offseason (unless you started churning out articles out of nowhere) and would lose Benfield anyway.

Only a handful of teams out there with cap space to really help you, and I think one can help you more than the other.

HAWKS SEND:
Kalin Lucas
Sanford Benfield

CELTICS SEND:
Saul King
10 Points

I may be being generous with the 10 points here, you might have to negotiate on it a little, but why do the Celtics do it? Benfield is an asset who probably will get reasonable offers in RFA and can play SG or backup combo guard for years to come on the Celtics. Lucas might not fit with the current mold, but the Celtics can churn that contract next offseason (or even maybe find a 3 way trade partner this season). Saul King is expiring, which is good for the Hawks, since next year should be more about resetting than resigning, and bad for the Celtics...I'd rather have Lucas--a better player--at 49mm guaranteed than risk losing King or having to overpay him.

Meanwhile, King can play meaningful minutes on this Hawks team (he's basically Blair without the fouling problem, which will come in handy) and keep the Hawks competitive.

By god, the Hawks have to do something. The Heat went all in and are paying the price, and we don't need another even newer GM having to navigate a tax fiasco.

This goes out to the spurs or the suns. Both teams are going to need some more Prd if they hope to win against the Lakers.

I'm sure there are more than a few teams they can trade with to get that perimeter defense.

But how sweet would that be if Leroy who was traded away found his way back to the finals and helped defeat the unstoppable Lakers who traded him away.

The raptors went out and made the trade for ridenhour to get better. Ridenhour is 30 and just starting his 5 year mega deal that will pay him 100M while being 34 and 35 which I think is the most anyone's ever been paid. The team is lacking a true scorer and relying on the point God in ridenhour to facilitate and be their leading scorer. Not to mention currently sitting at 6 games over .500 and they finished the season 8 games over .500.

Now that brings me to the trade. The raptors need a true #1 option that wants to score and his name is Ron Harper Jr.

Raptors send Romero(heat)
Raptors send points (heat)
Raptors send Tony Lee(Brooklyn)
Raptors send Points+ picks (Brooklyn)

Nets send Harper (raptors)

Heat send Jarrett (raptors)

I'm not sure that this is enough to get Harper. And hopefully the heat are willing to swap players for points (don't see why not) because they need points.

Play Harper at the 4, pace on 10 and go ball. You don't have years to figure it out with Riden.

Knock knock @pennpanther1

The Bucks need to add an upgrade at the guard spot, and they should reach out to the Magic re: Clarence Martin. Future 1sts, salary & 10pts could make Nick consider. The Bucks are leaning on their bigs way too much and need some help on the perimeter.

The Pacers should package up the Bey/Armitage expiring contracts and form their own Big 3. They could go after a few different players namely, Gerald Dixon or Charles Jarrett from the Heat, Ousmane Dieng from the Warriors, or Vaughn Millsap from the Grizzlies. Adding another legitimate scorer can take pressure off Herb Jones and give other teams more to worry about when they face off against Indiana.

The Pelicans have opened up the trade block to send out any number of great players. The Rockets are out here looking to get some scoring punch out of their front court.

Match made in heaven?

If I'm 78, I'd offer:

Steeve Ho You Fat
Matthew Falcon
Pick(s)
Points

And see if Chad would be willing to send out Ned Lomax. If that's not enough, I'd consider asking if a smaller package would get Alleman, who is a legit stud at Center too and has no long-term financial ties.

I've been a bit out of the loop with limited computer access lately, plus covid, so i'm not sure how to answer this question right now.

I'm still befuddled with the Hawks offseason, starting with a great move in acquiring Leroy Johnston...but stopping there. Other moves were available, but they didn't move, and now sit with the most expensive team in the league and no possible way to cover their tax bill before they lose assets.

I like the deal proposed above by @garbageman . If I can speak to reason why that's a better deal than this alleged daniel johnson deal (thank GOD RFA blocked that, jesus Fryeing christ), it will get done. One way or another, I fully expect Leroy Johnston to be out of a Hawks uniform by the trade deadline as well, completely pulling the Hawks out of contention this season. But if they'd rather do that then be in the tax, so be it.

The Cavs are one player away in making a splash. I think the Cavs should trade with the Celtics for Antonio Gates. Cavs should try to get Gates and offer 1st round pick and Karlo Pearson.

The trade that needs to happen is

Hawks send
Benfield
Zapeda
Leroy
Blair

Pelicans send:
Blankney
10 points
And 30 mill to a third team (kuric and company)

Hawk would be able to challenge Spurs and Lakers and the pelicans would still be a good playoff team with 3 more young assets. Hawks tax bill would be lower.
