I think the problem is that this team didn't have points and only had one pick to trade away, which would make improving difficult. There aren't a lot of depth pieces at a low price range but high enough of a difference maker to sell for just a pick. The move they made to sell AB got them incredible value that will help make them a TRUE contender around a full potential Akins or he can double-up his youth movement and get really quality pieces for Akins.

That being said, I don't think the Suns were the odds on favorite to win a championship, but I wouldn't have ruled them out completely either. I think in the right spot in a playoff series, AB could've been a difference-maker against any team that the Suns would have faced en route to a potential championship. It would've just been a matter of putting him in the spot and the software's algorithm to land on the more likely outcome more often than not.

I think this is already a really good team with a solid starting 5. The true missing piece is a starting PG. I probably would have moved anyone not named AB for the best PG I could get.

Yes, it would mess up my starting lineup. But I would evaluate where my team was weakest and fill that spot with a role player where the only thing they did was the one weakness I had. I think AB, paired with a proper PG, plugs a lot of different holes. I would have sacrificed Akinsa for that PG, or Anas for that PG. I think those players are great, but I think their value is less than AB at AB's full potential.

The execution of this, however, is a different story. If I couldn't find a PG, I may have blown up the team, or seen how far I could go as is.

Trade one of the stars plus role players to the Pacers for Jones and pair him up with AB, Akins, and Anas. Jones added to this team paired up with two of their stars and forming a big three would take this team to the next level. Trade Throckmorton, Bojorquez, Tominaga, and Cunningham plus a first to the Pacers for Jones. That’s how to make this team a legit championship threat long term. Jones is why the Pacers caught up to and passed them in the standings last season. The smart move is to add him and take this team to the finals.

Ooooh is that shade?

Unfortunately I lived this hell.
Reminds me a lot of the current Phoenix Suns in real life actually. Talent at every position but the PG spot. No true depth. No value in going pieces and no money. The team had a great deal of success and a top 6 record in the league. However, not having a point guard would have shown it's ugly head at some point. There also wasn't enough of success to suggest I would earn enough points to pay off a tax bill. With a looming Akins player opt out, I need to be able to resign him and not paying my tax would have not allowed this. The attempt at getting a good point guard was met with a lot of turn downs. I've tried for over a season to get someone to pair with AB and even Akins. I was willing to trade AB away for a PG because there's so much quality throughout the remaining starters. No one was selling, also my assets were absent. I'm always going to wonder "WHAT IF" with this team mainly because Omega is so weak. But I'm not the least bit upset at getting a reset on talent and the tax.

While this is a lovely idea, I just gotta say, there's a 0% chance Pauly would go for this. As Nate himself mentioned, there's not much depth here at all, so there's no roleplayers to send, nor did he have assets until after he dealt AB away. Plus, in this scenario, it's only Alleman going back, and as good as he is, he ain't Herb Jones. Still, I respect the swing.

Next: I think the right move was the move that Nate made. Complete a reset and still have ample talent leftover to either continue trading for more assets (Mahmoud, Alleman should be able to net something decent) or use some of his newfound flexibility and assets to trade up and re-tool around Akins and Co.

But: Just for the sake of the question, let's put together a realistic deal I can think up based on what I've seen available on trade blocks or personal discussions.

4-TEAMER!

Grizzlies - Lakers - Suns - Trailblazers

Grizzlies send:

KC Ndefo (Blazers)
Roger Holifield (Lakers)
Salary (look I'm not getting THAT far into the weeds)

Lakers send:

Evan Mobley (Suns)

Blazers send:

Darius Garland (Suns)

Suns send:

Charles Alleman (Grizzlies)
Cade Cunningham (Lakers)
7 points (Blazers)
57 Suns 1st (Blazers)

Suns lose Alleman, but get a decent replacement in Mobley and add the PG they covet. Blazers get to finish the full reset with a young blue pot and extras, I'd get a young green that I liked since the draft for Mobley, and Grizzlies get a player they told me they regretted not reaching out about in the off-season.

** Obviously, this deal would've had to have happened before numerous of these guys got dealt elsewhere. However, hey, I think it kinda works for everyone.

I agree with Jon above. The PG spot was the most needed piece with this roster, dating back to last season. I even tried to recommend last season that the Suns trade Akins for Zike, in a let’s win this damn thing type move. Well, I got my wish, but just with the Pelicans instead of the Suns.

I’d go in more detail on what I would have done with this roster, but the suns don’t want anything to do with me and this isn’t just a one move thing, especially now that he traded his best player in AB.

Everyone has identified PG as the glaring weakness here on an otherwise strong team so I'll do the same because they are correct.

I'd have bought Rubio De La Rosa off the Cavs for a couple points and just let him facilitate the offense.

Clearly there was one obvious answer here. Dump ANAS for a better option at Center. Who might you ask? OH YOU DIDNT KNOW... WELL YOU ASS BETTER CALL SOMEBODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY... and that somebody is Harold Schiff. 3 team trade with the Pistons-Grizz-Suns. Pistons send Schiff, Suns send 10pts & Anas (to Grizz), Grizz send me their pick and KC Ndefo or something. Grizz get long term salary to help keep them afloat and earn points, Suns shed Anas while getting a short term upgrade. Pistons get a young center to help with the rebuild they WANTED to try and do to start the year. Schiff was destined to be in Phoenix... but unfortunately, that future was TOO BRIGHT for the Suns. Should've bought some shades (I hear the Town Hall Coordinator is giving out shade for free these days)

If I was the Pistons in this deal, I don't think I take that deal. Anas is overrated. If you can't move Schiff, just think how hard it would be to move Anas who is constantly jumping teams. Being on 5 different teams before getting a max contract in RFA? Averaging more fouls than blocks, and almost having a TO rate equal to blocks.

Disagree with the Anas hate. I love me some Anas. ~20 PER, .612 TS% on the season, 59% from the field, 20 pts over 33 minutes... Like I said, I be loving me some Anas.

It is almost purely because of height. Once he hits 29 maybe 30, he will slow down and foul even more. If you make him 7'0", I would rather have g/g 33 year old Dr. Andrews on that four year (no team option) Anas deal. Doug only wants Anas because this would be the first player he would not have to complain about training the player's height.

Oh if that is the case, then yea that's fine. They can get the artificial stats and still tank for points.

Does why matter? Stats matter. We'll see how precipitous that drop off is, no way to be certain.

Shouldn't the why always matter in a trade?

I offered them Poole during the offseason in a Sign and Trade for Jaden Akins. I was shocked to be turned down immediately because Poole was not a "franchise" player worthy of a max contract. To each their own. Now excuse me while I go fap to his career year and his top 4 assists numbers. Meanwhile, you can enjoy 35 year old bum of a PG.

I'll trade for a PG. I'm thinking of Ernesto Cruz. He had a terrible training camp, but he's only 21. So much to improve. I think he will only get better and eventually be a green player for a long time. He's definitely a starter.
