S64 Lakers "I'm Only Here So I Don't Get Fined" Presser

I dont wanna be here.

We all here talked enough the last two off-seasons. Covered a lot of topics. Focus, determination, team work, execution, destiny, defense, and everything else in-between.

It didn't matter and I'm tired of talking.

We failed in our mission, regardless of the reasons that may have led to it. There's not one person in this organization who's happy about anything that happened last season.

This roster wasn't built to get swept in the Finals or use bullshit excuses to explain away losing in the conference finals. It was put together to dominate and win championships. Unless that happens, it's all for nothing.

Corey Kispert knows. That's why he's back. Thomas Walker understands. That's why he's back. Damien Bailey, Hassan Hodges? They have spent time with us before and they understand the assignment.

Evan Mobley and Karlo Pearson know better than anyone that you can't take these seasons, these rosters for granted. These two veterans understand. These opportunities don't come around all the time. Seize it.

Safi and Alleman are dialed in.

That's all I need to say.

They KNOW what is expected of them.

And Paolo Banchero?

He's shown me all throughout this off-season that he is ready to use all of his gifts and become a leader on this team. He brought it in Camp, played aggressively in preseason, and seems ready to come out guns blazing.

What this all comes down to is this: Forget about all those words I mentioned earlier that we've talked about as important with this team. Now, this team only has one mode.

We're pissed off.

Let's see what happens.

Any questions?

Did you hire a new training staff to help with injury prevention? That seemed to be the only thing that got in they way of you being a league champ this past season.

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: What will it mean for the future of the Lakers if the Lakers don't win a ring this season?

Chet Youbetcha, Dimmadome News: There are rumors that Mobley injured himself on purpose. Stating that the Cavaliers smell is still so strong on him that he must continue to underperform. Can you give us any light on this situation and is that why he was moved to the bench role?

Do you feel the Lakers "failures" have been a result of playing down to their competition or are your rivals more evenly matched than people give them credit for over the past few seasons?

The training staff from last season is running a McDonald's in Compton now. So, as you might expect, the ice cream machine definitely doesn't work.

Championship or not, this team COULD/SHOULD look pretty different next season. A few guys are safe, but with Mobley expiring and a need to tax reset looming, guys like Karlo Pearson may wish to be relocated to maximize the twilight of his career. We'll see.

Was Mobley ever a member of the Cavs?

The mood around here is all about us, but also not trying to diminish anything other folks who took advantage have done. The Grizzlies beat our asses, flat out. They earned every bit of that chip. Last season injuries crippled us at the most important part of the season, but give credit to the Nets for closing us out and the Warriors for bringing it home. Obviously, it gnaws at all of us, wondering how those two teams would have fared against our full squad... but that's not the Nets/Warriors fault. They took advantage of the road laid in front of them.

Do you feel like the Suns are a legitimate threat to your team this season in the divisional title race?

I think so, yeah.

There's a top 5 players in Phoenix who can/will play with any other top 5 in the league, which includes a top 3 player in the league, a top 3 Center and one of the best defenders in the league, and enough depth to have good production from the 2nd unit, at least in shorter stretches.
