Opening the Suggestion (Pandora's) Box Pt.1
Posted: Tue Feb 28, 2023 7:48 am
Hello again everyone.
I decided to keep going on with a theme of the suggestions. As part of my initial article I went back and read the old post from the first talks of point distribution. It was fun to read, helped shape my article, and I have always enjoyed looking back at what the GMs used to think back in the day. So I went back to the suggestion box forum area, and went to the really old stuff to see what people used to think. I think this will wind up being a series as there is a lot here and I only have time to do maybe most of the last page. In an attempt to also streamline this some, I am avoiding articles for the most part that have links to other articles. Aint nobody got time for that. I also added links to all articles I talk about, so if you wanted to look at the articles I am writing about you can easily. So here is part one – enjoy!
Clarification of FA Terms:
Right of the bat, I think reviewing some of the things that Wig used to post would be helpful for any of the newer GMs. He was very knowledgeable when it came to this software and how the game operates. If you have not read his breakdown of how to do a depth chart in the forum I highly recommend it, as I go back sometimes to recall which defenses are favorable for certain situations.
The basis of this article was to understand how bird rights work so that when people put bids in it would be correct and legal. The tactical notes are something interesting here, as the second bit is something I sometimes do, in the sense of I will routinely sign my glue guys to one year deals.
“ A couple of tactical notes:
Declining a rookie's 4th year contract option (after exercising his 3rd year option) makes him an Unrestricted Free Agent; however, the team will retain his Bird Rights and will be able to offer him a supermax after 3 years. (Why would you do this? To offer a smaller supermax than you would have to if you waited another year and the cap went up.)
Signing a player to a series of three one-year deals gets you Bird Rights with that player and allows you to offer him any amount you want. (Why would you want to do this? Maybe you find a young bench player that you get on a minimum for three years running, then offer him slightly more than the minimum (say, $100K more) on a long-term deal even though you're over the cap.)”

And yall say James comes up with crazy ideas.
Trade Deadline should be cutoff for declining team option
This is an interesting idea. I initially before reading thought “hey, this could be something we could revisit for sure!” After reading through it, I quickly changed my mind. While the idea seems great where I think this may fall in with what is currently being done, it also is not what’s best for everyone in the game. It would require us changing a date that has been around forever, thus causing havoc the for the first season. It will put more work on both the GM and the commissioner at the trade deadline. For the commissioner it’s extra steps to a process that is already a busier sim day for him. For the GMs, it requires you to plan for next season at the half way mark, when you may have just traded for a player, or maybe increasing minutes on a team option contract player who had limited minutes before. This was a good job by our older statesmen to keep what isn’t broke.
Protected Draft Picks
I am so glad they got rid of this. I remember talking to a more senior GM about this a while back and they were telling me how it was ridiculously hard to track – because the game does not protect picks in any way. Trade talks would be ridiculous, where as soon as you get to an agreement on compensation, there is going to be a second discussion on how the pick(s) that are included should be protected, no thank you. The fact that they could not keep track of it in 2015, when every GM was super active and competitive (I would stand no chance with them), there is no way we were going to be able to get it done now. If you disagree, go ahead and be a coordinator for a few season then get back to me. One of the funnier bits in this one is when X suggests a pick tracker, just for Wig to send a link to one that was already implemented, thus showing how challenging this rule would really be to follow. I am also sure Doug is glad we never implemented a trade police, like he suggested as well. He and I would not like that now a days.
Hall of Fame
While I know this would require work, and knowing the league as a whole, I would love to see the Hall of Fame come back. It could be a fun way to celebrate players that we had previously. You can nominate one player you feel is worth it that is retired every year and then either a committee of GMs or league wide vote then decides who gets in. Wig had a very good idea it seems, and other GMs supported it – and maybe even implemented it?I know as awards person, I struggle getting votes sometimes where I could see HOF being even harder to do. Maybe it could be a point generator, if it is only using the game’s HOF? Where we could award a point to the GM of the player that the team was most involved with (Wade for me, Boban for Andy, Winston for K100) type thing, or maybe if it assigns a team next to the name then that GM would get the point? JNR, I know you are newly back to the game and I think had some involvement previously, why not again?
Training of Purple Potential Players
Two thoughts come to mind:
1. Purple lives matter.
2. Not all blue players are purple, but all purple players are blue.
00/01 New Rule: Playoff Injuries
Why do I feel like every rule that Soundwave chimed in on is going to, or has previously, affect him in some way?
Draft Time Allowed Per Pick
This was eventually implemented, unless NOLa was implying that it should go quicker than the 2 hour window. Other than that it appears, if I have the draft right, seems Tani was just bored waiting for a draft to end that he did not have a pick in. I am looking at the draft file for the 2000 draft and it boasts some decent prospects, I do not know how they turn out because it is way before my time. Gilbert Arenas, who was still around when I joined like 12 years later, is the first pick. Pau Gasol, JRich, Joe Johnson, Tony Parker, and Tyson Chandler (also around when I joined and still a decent defensive Center if I remember correctly) round out the top of this draft. It seems like a very good draft to me, where there are about 10 blue potential players (which was a lot of blue players in one draft from talking to older GMs about the way the depth used to be in the league.)
