Nothing comes easy - The history and thought process of a meaningless trade

Alright, this is my first foyer into writing an article, but after Iamquailman said no one would trade with him and the grizzlies picked up Reginald Fulford, I have to write this article.

(Events are italicized and My thoughts are in bold.)

Event
Trade

Mavs send:
John Lowry
David Mantooth
Kenneth Douglas
10 points

Cavs send:
Larry Canfield

Thoughts
Phew! I finally got a guy. Cavs are easy to work with. Those extra contracts I gave out at the beginning of the year to try and trade for Fang Shuo finally came in handy. I know Larry Canfield was my 8th choice after Fang Shuo, Leroy Johnston, Ibrahima Diallo, Quincy Johnson, Dario Beaton, Douglas Haun, (All players I could maybe get without sending Scoot or Kaminga, I mean, most of them are on a team trying to tank and they have overpriced contracts or one-year contracts, except Quincy and Diallo they were a reach) and Evan Mobley (who I would have to move Scoot or Kaminga to get.)

I know I didn't include Sneed and his 17 million contract but didn't want to rock the boat of a good trade with the Cavs; plus I can just send out a few points and move that contract.

Alright, besides Sneed, what other contracts should I cut? Jeffery Holt. Naw. He fits what I'm trying to do, and I need a backup guard. Reginald Fulford he's kinda killing it for me, but I just picked up Canfield, so not sure I have minutes for him. Alright, get rid of Reginald Fulford.
He's on a min. I could cut him, but I don't want to send him to a contender, so I'll do what Iamquailman did with Zeke Nnaji last season and send him to a non-contender.

Who can send Sneed and Reginald Fulford to?

Event
The Suns and the Spurs have both offered to give contract relief. I group chat Suns "I need to send you guys and some points," The Pistons group chat, they will move contracts for 1 point! Suns post a hella funny gif. Of tiny tim begging for alms.

Thoughts
Sweet.
This should be easy. Hope he posts that gif on the forum so I can nominate it.

The pistons know what they are doing. It looks like they are building a future behemoth. Also, didn't he try to send me Toby Sigman for 10 points last season when I didn't know what I was doing.

Last season:

"Very flexible and negotiable, sir! He's a decent looking player, young, and on a very team-friendly deal. Ideally, I'd love to get 10pts, but I'm overly optimistic I'm open to coming down from that ask... unless you are absolutely compelled to offer 10 . What were you thinking?"

And this offer.

"Any interest in elite guard cade cunningham or elite defender Frank Daily? Lookin at Scooter Hendo but i dunno, you tell me!"

Event
I responded, "I'd rather send 2 points to the Suns." Suns Heart it!

Thoughts
Nice. I'll send 2 points to the Suns. That will be funny.

Event
Send an offer of giving 2 points and a decent player Reginald Fulford to the Suns for picking up the Sneed contract.

Thoughts
Deals Done.

Event
Suns respond, asking for 5 points!

Thoughts
WTF. Hell no! Guess I'll just cut Fulford. I'm not paying 5 points! The pistons said they'd take on contracts for 1 point. Looks like I got to make a deal with the…

Event
Offer pistons:

Mavs send:
Sneed
+1 points

Pistons send:
2nd round pick 2053

Thoughts
I plan on sending him 2 points, especially since I made that joke earlier. But he always asks for more than the first offer, so I'll let him ask for 2 and agree to it.

Event
Pistons ask for 3 points

Thoughts
Jesus Christ. I'm just trying to move off of one 17-million contract. What is happening? I only have 5 points currently. So every point counts. Wait, I forgot about the Spurs!!!! Maybe they can help.

Event
I offer the Spurs 1 point for the Sneed contract, because this shit is cutthroat, and it will leave room for a 2 points counter offer. Spurs ask for 2 points and then offer to move Sneed for FREE!!!!! (and swap picks!) I don't want to be a charity case so I sent over 2 points.

Current Thoughts
I had to write this article in response to the Pistons complaining that no one wants to trade with them and contending the Grizzlies pick up a solid backup Reginald Fulford.

Also, no soup for you! Tiny Tim.

Lessons
The Spurs and Cavs are chill to trade with!!! Take what you will from the rest.

Moving the Sneed contract was infinitely more difficult than picking up Canfield. LOL

If you're a new GM, this is how this shit goes down. Be ready!!!!!!

Wow, this was the first reply to the counter offer I sent, @LazyTitanSmash !

For the record, for the new GMs here... there's a little game that people play here. It's called "negotiations with counter offers". Person A offers to send "X" pts, Person B counters with "Z" pts, then Person A & B agree to "meet in the middle" with "Y" points. Ask @MexicanMamba & @Xist2Inspire and whoever else is around. The intention is always "Y" points.

You knew you would be fine with sending 2 points to dump your salary... yet you only offered 1 hoping someone would take it. But you are offended I asked for 3 (which I would've also been fine with 2). It's basically the same thing that happened when you asked about Sigman and I said "10pts". Try to get the best deal you can, but know you would probably settle for less if the other isn't willing to pay.

Long story short: Instead of ghosting DMs and writing up an article sharing our private DMs, just send me a message back next time. Or don't send me offers anymore either. Either way works.

To be fair to Doug, the counter offer is something that I always hope to see in any trade talks I have. I will always send what I think is optimal for me, and what I think could be good compensation. Where I think the counter-party would then respond with "yup, looks good to me!", or "Hey, this is something more in line with what I was thinking", or the least hopeful "No, I am not interested". Where the last one I feel is often times jumped to by us more often than maybe it should be if the player(s) are indeed available (I even do it myself - doing it to LTS at least once this season.)

Besides all of that, this is a great article. I love seeing the thought process that people have in trades and the process they take. I am someone that always overthinks these things (as you can see from above) and sometimes hate the process all together.

Look, I'm not going to say I'm perfect at replying to every trade message every time. A couple times things fall through the cracks if I check and get caught up with something else and forget to circle back. That's not what I'm referring to. It's just the courtesy of a reply that goes a long way.

But again, I've been repeatedly painted as a shitty person to trade with over the last calendar year+, so of course it's going to impact the way people approach trades with me. I'm not some dude that's trying to actively Frye you over.. but I am someone who's at least trying to maximize the value of guys I'm trying to move. There's a difference.

* I wrote the wrong number for the Suns offers. I only offered 1 points not 2. The Suns are a fine trading partner. I did not mean to imply otherwise. I just wasn’t ready to send 5 points for that trade. I just wasn’t expecting it.

As long as I've been in the league, more like. I have liked and not liked some of our deals after they happen, but you're definitely a super fun negotiator, and not afraid to talk dirty to me, A+ banter (even tho you ghosted me on Hub talks because I wasn't willing to concoct on offer that would send out Hub :P and so I sat there with my box of tissues thinking you max bid my hubby because you actually liked my hubby :( :( :( I'll never forgive you)

Anyway, @LazyTitanSmash, 820+ words, +4pts. Write more stuff dude, I loved it!
