League-Wide Conference/Division Realignment

Let me preface this with the fact that I don't even know if the game supports this; we need to ask the 'Puter (Wig).

A league realignment could be a new and fun twist to the league. Shake up divisions and conferences. It would be at random, picking names out of a hat 1 by 1 (could do like a snake draft style of picking). We could make it a forum even. I could film it and make it into a youtube video to watch. We could do a Google Hangouts too. I mean there are alot of fun options here.

But why?

Look at the atlantic and look at the pacific, and it should speak for itself. Yeah, we could wait 5 seasons and hope it plays out, but I think shaking up the divisions and having different GMs to bring out the best/worst in you on a competitive side may be a great thing to have. I know for me having some damn good GMs in the Central has kept me pressing to make good moves. I really do think that doing a shuffle like this could be a fun twist and reinvigorate people.

What do you think?

I understand the motivation for change, as those divisions are hosed, and the salaries are really unbalanced at the conference level... West has 11 of top 15 team payrolls, only 3 of bottom 14, and those are 3 of the 4 worst teams from last season.

If realignment is meant to mix things up, it will do that, but will it address the causes of this imbalance? If not, you are just asking for another realignment later.

So, what do you think is the cause?

How long as this imbalance existed? (Save the trash talking)

If I'm not mistaken, we're a few seasons away from when the NBA realigned divisions in real life. Sounds good to me, I'd love to help re-arrange teams geographically if we decide to do so.

It's too bad that we don't really have a GM on the waiting list so that we could expand to an even 30 teams.

I would support a realignment

I'm not necessarily saying realign because that is where the power is now. Hell that random draw could pull same divisions that we have now (odds are ridiciously/borderline impossibly low). But Many people in the league have been here from the start. Not all, but alot have. And almost everyone has had the same division the whole time. A shake up would be something fun. Not saying we need this to be the end all be all, but having a "generational" realignment would be a fun twist to have.

I guess the example i used of the shift of power to one conference and a crap conference was a bad example, but I'm just saying moving teams around would be more fun for the comradery and change for the sake of making things fresh.

Another interesting twist might be something similar to relegation.

The 13 non-playoff teams get put into a pool each season.

The 13 worst playoff teams (by record) get to "draft" these teams into their divisions, with the stipulation that we still have divisions of 7 teams and one division with 8 teams.

So, for instance, the Celtics would have gotten first pick of a team from the non-playoff teams to pull into their division. Maybe they want to steal the Cavs from the Central. Then the Pistons pick. They want the Knicks from the Atlantic. The 76ers pick next; they pull the Nuggets into the Atlantic, etc.

Also means once you miss the playoffs, you don't know what division you'll end up in next season. Another nice little incentive to make the playoffs. ;)

Just a thought.

Just in terms of imbalance duration until I get the actual answer, please.

Otherwise, have at it.

If we had complete re-alignment, instead of it being random, I would SO much rather have the people who run the league (Doug, Scott, Wig, Wave, etc) and anyone else who's been here for a while rank every GM in the league 1-29 (or 30 if you have an expansion team). Then average the rankings to an overall power ranking and split them up into tiers for 4 or 6 divisions. So let's say we decide we're keeping 29 teams and 4 divisions, but we wanna make it fairer. Take the top 4 GM's and put them in 4 separate divisions. Then do the same with 5-8 then 9-12, 13-16, 17-20, 21-24, 25-28 and put 29 somewhere. That way the divisions are relatively fair with good GM's and bad ones. Because of this, you should also have a relatively equal amount of teams competing and tanking thoughout each division.

Hehehe, the salt over who's considered a "bad" GM will be legendary.

Another huge plus to this (even if my name winds up in the late 20s :D )

I think we can put a stop to the "expansion to 30" and "4 divisions increase to 6 divisions" talk. Ain't happening.

And yes, salt levels are already high today. No need to throw salt in more wounds. lol

Fully support this with a new Pelicans team being intorduced at that time!

Perhaps a better solution than straight-up realignment (which is actually pretty hard to do geographically with the teams/cities we have now) to "fix" the imbalance is to allow occasional GM swapping. Syndicate and Quail (and Inner) can probably attest to this, it can get boring running with your squad season after season sometimes, and the lure of the draft makes blowing it up an easy decision. GM swaps could give burnt-out GMs another option besides "blow it up and tank away." To bite off of the recent Brian Windhorst article, maybe some GM's could be "fired" every once in a while and become candidates for a switch lol.

Honestly though, I think that the current imbalance is due to the perfect storm of Wig's superteam + solid/awesome drafts. If the young Eastern teams can keep their cores more or less intact, we're likely to see a power shift by 2004.

I vote no on realignment. Instead I vote for disbandment.

Can we rename the divisions too, and whichever one Sound ends up in, we call it the Career 40% GMs Division

Oh and I support this idea, I think a completely random realignment would be fun.

The idea I had (no new teams, not adding new divisions... 4 divisions, 29 teams):

Snake "draft" of 4 "teams" (divisions). Division drafting order would be randomized on a draft order generator (i.e. http://www.fantasyfootballnerd.com/random-draft-order).

Then, as I mentioned earlier, hosting a Google Hangout/Live Stream sometwhere/Skype call/video posted to Youtube of the "draft". Make an event out of it.

This would happen during the playoffs, so it would be some excitement for non-playoff teams. And would go into effect beginning of 03-04 season.

It would be completely random, and would create a sense of "freshness" to the league since division races would be amongst new teams.
