OKC Thunder Presser S 2043

Picture it… Nick Van Exel, Penny Hardaway, Jason Kidd. All players who are in the hall of fame and are world class PBSL athletes. Now… picture Zaire Wade. We believe he will take a step into that stratosphere this season.

Anyways. Last season was interesting. We had a max cap space slot and wanted to use it on a third player to try to make a big three of sorts. It didn’t happen. We signed He Hor, to just loose him in RFA, and then struck out in UFA. We also decided to leave Fox and Franklin out of our plans in fear of TC destroying them. So we signed a bunch of players in RD 2 we felt would develop or would play well on cheap deals, that we would sell. Some did, some didn’t (and no one was buying at deadline). We were lucky to hit on a few and did well enough to weather a late season slump and make it to the playoffs, which I honestly did not expect. Won the first round and then gave the Clippers everything they could handle before bowing out.

Going into this offseason, same script different year. Traded Oturu for two rookies that could develop and to get a max slot. Signed two outstanding RFAs to not retain either (hoping the Blazers would not pay attention did not work ) , and struck out in RFA 1. So we retooled again with some players we felt would develop or would play well on a cheap contract. TC was solid. The players who were older got hit, but I feel like Wade and Maker really took a step forward. Wade I believe is a top 5 player now and Maker is a top 5 post player, which is outstanding. Add in Tubbs and Hintz having great camps, and we have something cooking in OKC. I think we will be a team to be trouble for anyone to contend with, but not sure if we are true championship level yet. I’m still fishing for that third player, but also think that they might be on my roster as well…

Starters as of this minute (has flipped in my mind 10 times the past 10 mins) :
C: Tubbs
PF: Maker
SF: Hintz
SG: Wade
PG: Odell

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: You had a 6-0 preseason...the only undefeated preseason of any team this year. How do you sleep at night after that Oturu trade?

GWR: Even as he ages, do you see Raspberry as the glue to your offense?

Yeah. I’m actually pretty stoked to have a PG of his caliber on this team. He is probably the best PG I’ve had in a while and is on an outstanding contract as well. Glue guy is a great way to describe him in this system too. He will be a great facilitator, finding Wade, Maker, or Hintz, he will play hard defense (giving Wade a run for his money for leading stealer on the team) and allow me to have Wade defend whatever wing player I need, and won’t require 12 shots a game on offense to be effective.

What I’m more interested in is with Odell playing PG, I’m able to move Wade to SG. Odell’s passing game will allow Wade to thrive at SG. I think Wade was a more than capable PG, he even has some defensive all teams on his resume, I think his skill set will be put to much more use at SG. As I implied at the start of this presser, I think Wade will take a true step towards MVP type playing this season. He will now be able to play more of a scoring role, where he can find assists when the appear.

Justin Bieber; Teremana.com: UFA Round 1 you missed on big time players. However, during TC, Thunder improved so much that Thunder are currently ranked #5 on the pre-season rankings. Are you surprised you are a top 5 team? Do you think Thunder will live up to the hype?

You have both Wade and Makur showing up as offensive threats this preseason. Do you see Wade as your lead scorer and Makur's scoring as an advantage or disadvantage to Wade stacking up buckets for you?

I was surprised to be honest, I think in part it was because I signed a lot of g/g players that some will not play at all. I do feel more confident in that ranking after TC, and I think we are a higher end team, but not sure yet if we are type 5.

I think they will compliment each other. Wade doesn’t have a great 3ps, and I imagine is more of a slasher, so he will open up opportunities for Maker to get backside buckets and ORebs.

Do you think Thunders have a chance at beating the 76ers or Cavs this season?
