Sim League Mock Creation Draft

When I was trying to think of an article idea, I've always been drawn to this idea. For those who read bourbon street shots, when they used to be hornets247, they did something similar for the real NBA at the time http://www.bourbonstreetshots.com/2012/ ... ounds-1-4/.

For this in sim league, we have 7 GM's including myself who are currently participating in the draft. Each GM is doing brief write-ups for their picks and I'll be posting these as we go along.

We established a few rules:
1) It's a mock creation draft: so the 7 GMs are drafting not only to win now, but to compete for future years as well.
2) All current contracts apply as the players cap holds.
3) We established a 50 million dollar hard cap. This way, it wouldn't simply be a 12 round max contract draft.
4) To avoid abuse of rookie contracts, we established a 2 rookie contract per team limit.

These are the main rules. The draft order is Xist, Nickmalone, Loco, Darth, Bow, Quail, Ballsohard.

I am watching with basted breasts.

Point of order: You saw 7 GM's, list 6 names.

Point of order: Snake draft? I think that is what those assholes did, but how would I know?

FYI: Final rosters plus discussion. http://www.bourbonstreetshots.com/2012/ ... t-wrap-up/

He likes leaving my name out. Makes him sleep better at night. I'm picking after Loco.

I'm not sure he fully embraced his draft position. At the time, I am not sure Williams and Bynum were as much of obvious disasters, either. Goes to show that building for the future is tough, and so is playing your position.

Those graphics do not make the order obvious, but there are some strategies to use.

Ginsberg killed that draft. George, Lebron, Aldridge, Lawson?! Haywood and Isaiah Thomas of the bench?!

Good team. Not sure how long he could hold it together, but he had a damned good team.

Round 1)

Xist: Tim Duncan 10,069,134

Why: Of course, originally I was like "Muhahaha Penny is mine!" But, after taking some time to sit and reflect, I went with Timmy D. At 25 (going on 26), Tim fulfills the elusive goal of winning both long-term and short-term. At 7', he has excellent size for his natural position, and his skills speak for themselves. Talented big men are still at a premium, and there are very few other than Tim who are able to lead a team both now and in the future. For that, he's my 1st pick.

NickMalone
: Kevin Garnett 10,904,794

Analysis: With the reigning MVP off the board and sitting in a premium spot, my options honestly could would have been between choosing between KG and young Penny aka Tracy McGrady. Granted, KG is 25 turning 26 and McGrady is 22 but this game really seems to favor big men in the paint. KG right now is the perfect combination of a two-way player that I'd look for and has consistently put the Lakers on his back since Scott traded for him and has grown into the monster we'd all expected him to be and then some. KG still has another few years to go before he gets another Super-Max contract that I'd be excited to give and see him grow old on my roster. Louie is on the clock next.

LoCo: OPenny Hardaway 10,123,970

8 all star appearances
8 all league teams

There's simply no denying that the man at the center of three championships is a force in this league and I'm so glad he dropped to me. Sure his scoring is down now, being on the Atlanta MonStars, but all of Penny's production can still be showcased On occasion. One of the biggest reasons you find him at the center of deep playoff runs is that just about every year, Anfernee cranks up his production during the second season and I'm exciting about having a guy like that as my centerpiece.

Darth: Tracy McGrady 10,069,134

A large number of superstars could have went at this spot. T-Mac has everything except a rookie contract. He's 22, he's the read deal and can play a number of positions. And yet, still has potential to grow into. On the first year of his new max, that gives me a full 10 years of his awesome talent. He is the perfect young player to build around.

Bow: Shaquille O'Neal 12,630,856

At this point, the clear top 4 is off the board. The best players available are all aged 29-32. So I bit the bullet and went with a 30 year old. In this creation draft where everyone will have some sort of super team, Shaq gives me a huge advantage over every single other team at the center position for at least the next 3 years. In a league of matchups, this is a guy no one will be able to match up with for at least 3 seasons.

Quail
: With #6 pick, I select Elton Brand (2,919,626). As with the rest of the picks sentiment (outside of Loco picking Penny), having a big man cornerstone in this league is almost a must. Elton has been racing to the top of the list in scoring power forwards, and his potential isn't even close to being met. With his ALMOST-LIMITLESS athleticism, if Elton continues to improve in skill categories like rebounding and defense, he could easily become an elite power forward in this game.

Balls: Jalen Rose 9,922,008

Round 2)

Balls: Chris Webber 10,123,969

Quail: With the #9 overall pick (2nd pick of round 2), I select Ben Wallace (10,291,809). building a dominant front court is every NBA francise's dream, and with Elton Brand and Ben Wallace, this front court will be dominant for years to come. Where Elton Brand is deficient on defense and rebounding, Ben Wallace slides in and becomes opposining teams' nightmare in the paint. They are the perfect compliment for one another, and with both having room to grow, they will only get better with age.

Bow: Vince Carter 3,176,219

I thought about a bunch of people at this point and I have to admit I seriously considered drafting Kemp. But shooting guard is easily the weakest position in the league, and Carter is already the best in the league. On his rookie contract, he's a huge value. He's versatile enough that he can even play the 1 and 3 in short spurts. And since Shaq hasn't been the elite scorer he should be, Carter as the 4th best scorer in the league right now should pick up the slack.

Darth: Shawn Kemp 15,266,711

Why? Because he's Shawn Mutha-<expletive deleted> Kemp, that's why. He's still averaging 30 & 11. Those are sick numbers, and even in his slow decline, he will still be outplaying most at his position. T-Mac and Kemp...let's go!

Loco: WIG it, I'll be the Old Man Team:

My selection is Zo (12,082,961)

Averaging 24 & 11 with 3 BPG, still a force on both sides of the ball.

NickMalone: Ray Allen 10,525,714

When looking at the options and what was left, there's plenty of rookies that I could have gone with but the star of "He Got Game" in his own is one of the more dominant scorers for his position which he would play on the wing. His jumper makes you respect his game and playinga game of jumpers with KG and Ray Allen makes it difficult for any team to guard that I think makes it more ideal for the team ID want.

Xist: Zydrunas Ilgauskas 10,291,809

Why: Another still-young post player at 26, Zydrunas is a great compliment to Duncan. Both are interior scoring machines, and having an imposing post combo of a 7'3" C and a 7' PF ensures that I'll have a strong defensive foundation for years to come.

Round 3:

Xist: Shawn Marion 2,621,629

Why: I actually thought hard about doing something crazy like drafting Dirk to play SF or pick up Pau to back up Timmy D and Big Z. But I eventually decided to go conventional and use my first rookie deal slot to pick up Shawn Marion. A virtual swiss army knife, Shawn's elite rebounding skills and emerging defensive abilities makes him a perfect fit for this squad. At only 23, he has the potential to become one of the best swingmen in the league one day, and that makes him a very valuable acquisition.

NickMalone: Paul Pierce 2,552,568

Continuing the young nucleus of my squad with KG, and Allen, Pierce's dynamic shot making ability and length at the wing makes him a valuable asset for my squad. He's in the final year of his rookie deal but he'll fit in just fine with what he'll be able to do giving my squad an evermore dangerous presence on the wings. His tenacious ability to hustle and fight and nail clutch shots will help my squad push forward.

Loco: After picking Penny & Zo and hoping to nab Marion (Xist you WIGGING bastard), I'm gonna have to go the other way a pick a scoring SF. And with that, I choose Antawn Jamison (2,080,527). A bit more efficient than Paul Pierce with more size, with more room to operate, Jamison has finally become the scoring threat that we knew he could be. He also gives a bit more rebounding with nearly 8 RPG which is always welcome at the SF position. And all of this comes with the benefit of a rookie scale deal, my first of two.

Darth: I can't resist. I select Marcus Camby (10,525,714) here. I have McGrady pulling down nearly 8 rpg at the SF or SG position. Why not pair up Kemp with the best rebounder in the league and arguably the best defensive Center in the league. NO team will out rebound me and good luck getting to the rim with these two protectors guarding it. I have no rookie contracts yet...WIG it. I'll take these 3 guys and figure that out later.

Bow: Pau Gasol 3,036,458

Rookies are starting to fly off the boards and while there are many good rookies available still, Gasol stands out. He's the only rookie with both A potential inside and post D. His size along with his potential will make him a good rebounder as well in addition to being above average athletically. He's only 21 and he has the potential to be a top 10 player. Meanwhile, he can be an elite 3rd big man for me now.

Quail: Baron Davis 3,262,152

Baron Davis may be the best 2-way point guard in this league in a season or 2. His potentials are up there and look very similar to that of Gary Payton in his prime. He's not as athletic as other point guards out there, but his ability to pass, shoot, and defend will be critical for this team going forward. We have our floor general.

Balls: Dirk Nowitzki 2,842,716

Dirk and my next pick will be my eye towards the future with guys that perform today on great contracts. Dirk is a big i can slot at the 4 next to Webber if needbe and can pack a potent scoring punch. As i'm watching teams pick i'm seeing front courts containing Camby/Kemp; Brand/Wallace; Jamison/ Zo. So i think if i get into a tough series with someone how can i counteract these bigs and the only way i gather is the ability to attack outside defiencies. Dirk is the perfect big to attack the plodders down-low being assembled. I also thought rounds 3-4 were the sweet spot for me to get rookie contracts, i didn't have the option to take the top tier guys on rookie deals, but i also got 2 studs instead.

Round 4:

Balls: Bonzi Wells 1,343,349

There's a couple of guys that i liked more if i were starting fresh, but Bonzi appealed to me for this team as my last rookie deal because of a few reasons. First and foremost he's a defensive presence. He's a lunch pail kind of guy that has A PRD and A STL potential. Secondly he's not slouch in the scoring department as well. Wells eventually will be a strong inside outside threat. Why is this important? As i stated earlier, there's a lot of cattle down low to get through and teams that can't shoot will not do well in a tournament. Flexibility is my goal and friend in this draft.

Quail: Shareef Abdur-Rahim 10,291,809

In PBSL, Shareef has always manned the 4 for the Spurs, but he has all the athleticism and skills to easily play the 3 in this league. His biggest deficiency is perimeter defense, but that is something that can be overlooked when you bring rebounding and EFFICIENT scoring to the small forward spot (career TS of 58.1% and 1.40 PPS). Between Brand and Shareef, offensive output will NOT be an issue. Another great thing about Shareef, he JUST turned 25 this season. He's going to be an offensive and defensive force for seasons to come.

Bow: Donyell Marshall 9,922,008

Versatility? Can play the 3 and 4. Contract? Not awful. Under 10 million. Age? Only 28. Purple potential? Check. Donyell checks just about every box you could ever want. He's a very good 3 pt shooter and scores well inside as well. He's an elite rebounder, a good post player, and versatile in that he's good at stealing and blocking. He's also a nightmare to match up with athletically with his 69 quickness and 6'9 269 pound frame.

Darth: Andre Miller 1,621,334

This pick was fairly easy. I needed to pick a guy still on a rookie deal. And I needed someone to be the floor general. My kind of point guard must have sick handles, great passing skills, and be a defensive boss. Andre fits all of those roles well. He also will NOT be a key offensive player. He will score when needed, as he can definitely create for himself, but it won't be needed. He can put his energy into dishing and defending.

Chauncey Billups: 10069134

So with the objective of trying to build a full team of 12 players with 50 million in cap, this is probably where you should start to look to be a bit more cost effective, and that was going to be my idea going into the 4th pick. However, Chauncey is just too good to pass up here. 25 years old, locked up for 5 years and with the versatility of my team, I can move Penny to SG and wont have many issues. And the combined athleticism and defense on the perimeter should wreak havoc on opposing guards. Look for the salary watching to happen in the next round. Hopefully....

NickMalone is on the clock

My Round 4 Pick = Jason Kidd
$10,494,423

With the amount of rookie contracts that have been going quick of late, I have the middle of the team filled out and now I add one of the very best PGs of sim in Kidd. He's 29 and just has 2 more years on his deal but he's a multi time all star and champion. He's already had some playing time with KG and is one of the top defensive guards in the game. Jason Kidd personifies a floor general if I ever did see one and would be the perfect two way point guard that won't have to score to facilitate the kind of defense I'd wanna run and find perfect outlet passes in the corner for Allen and Pierce to exploit for an open 3.

Xist is next.

My Pick (Round 4): Keith Van Horn ($10,069,134)

Why: I'll probably regret this later on, but spending big again makes sense for my team at the moment. KVH's capable of hitting shots from anywhere on the floor, but it's his perimeter scoring touch in particular that I'll need to stretch the floor offensively. Also, at 6'10", he's yet another big body that I can use to make life for opposing frontcourts miserable. He's not the best defender, but size matters, and will cover that flaw somewhat.

My Pick (Round 5): Damon Stoudamire ($6,636,392)

Why: Into a team of giants steps a Mighty Mouse. There's nothing like having a dependable ballhandler and facilitator running the point, and Damon is one of the better PGs around. His scoring skills are welcome but not needed, as his only job will be to feed Timmy D and KVH. He's fairly average defensively, but with Marion helping him out in the backcourt and Big Z backing him up, I'm none too worried about foes exposing that weakness. Oh, and did I mention his lovely short contract?

My round 5 pick: Michael Olawakandi
$975,923

I'll round out my starting 5 and the last of my rookie deal with the next best option at Center after the big legacy guys were taken. Kandi-man has the size and defensive chops to play on my squad. My team may score 80 but it'll allow 70 and that's huge in this game. Now to fill out the rest of the roster.

Louie is up next.

Round 5 for Team Loco: Ron Artest, $1,769,862

Mr Limitless himself, Artest gives me even more flexibility. If I can nab another starting quality player in the later rounds, I can bring him or someone else off the bench. With the team that I currently have constructed, scoring won't be an issue, stopping teams will. Artest gives me a strong defender at 4 of the 5 starting spots and a rookie deal to boot.

5th round pick : Gilbert Arenas $2,717,630

His soon to be inside scoring ability, size, and freak athleticism make him a monster at the 2. His handles are just good enough to run the point if asked.

Eric Snow 6,204,001

With Shaq, Vince, Donyell, and Pau for the future, this team can pull points out of its ass. So I'm going with Eric Snow and his bargain deal. The point guards taken so far are elite on offense, so give me arguably the best defensive point guard in the league. At just over 6 million, his deal still leaves me plenty of wiggle room for the rest of the draft.

Glenn Robinson - $9,922,000

Really torn between picking need versus probably one of the best, most versatile players left in the draft pool. Drafting Glenn Robinson allows us to play match-ups and see what works. He can easily come off the bench at either forward position, and honestly the hole at shooting guard isn't as much of a concern, after seeing Eazy slide Glenn Robinson into the 2-spot this past playoff sim. Robinson doesn't have the best handles, but his passing, rebounding, athleticism, and overall scoring ability make him way too hard to pass up on.

Remaining Cap: $13,312,604

Balls is on the clock.
