2046-2047 76ers Preseason Press Conference

Post by K-100 »

Last season was a disaster. I knew it was going to be hard to stay competitive with such an inexperienced squad but getting blown out night after night made every passing sim that much better because at least the nightmare was almost over. How that team managed to even win 12 games is beyond me.

But all was not lost. While the team's lack of wins was jarring, last season's squad had some noteworthy individual successes. The rookie class featured Carlos Jose, Reginald Fulford, and Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa who all played significant minutes and earned 1st Team All-Rookie honors. De La Rosa, in particular, was a stat-stuffer during garbage time and became the first player in league history to average at least 10 assists per game in his rookie season.

This offseason we managed to acquire several strong veterans, including some pretty hefty contracts from GMs looking to shed salary. I know fans are excited to see future Hall of Famer Delmar Lopez at the Wells Fargo Center, and we are doubly excited to see 7x All-Star Cassius Winston back in Philly red, white, and blue for his well-deserved homecoming. We also were able to sign Burt Gibson, Aaron Nesmith, Matthew Burns, and Ron McGee this offseason and expect them all to contribute on both ends of the court this season. In the draft, we slid down to #4 on lottery night but managed to pull off a couple of trades to pad the bank and finished the night at #12 to select the best 3PT shooter in the draft class, Bennedict Mathurin.

Overall, I think this season will be better than S56, but it will still be difficult to make the playoffs because we do intend to keep an eye toward the future and sell if the price is right. Playoffs or not, Philly's goal remains the same - continue churning points and get closer to paying off this debt.

Projected Starting Lineup
PG: Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa
SG: Bennedict Mathurin
SF: Delmar Lopez
PF: Reginald Fulford
C: Joe Pabon
6th: Aaron Nesmith

Any questions?

Sham Smith, Bulls.com: Obviously, being in tax debt, your main goal is to get out of tax debt. So if you could play armchair GM to any team, who would it be, and what would you do?

good question. I'm going to cheat and give you two teams but for different reasons.

From the purely business side, the New York Knicks. You did a good (dare I say award-winning) job explaining how the Knicks rose from almost two decades of mediocrity to a 55+ win team last season. Dr. K deserves a lot of credit for turning that franchise around so I'd hate for all the good he has done to go to waste because I think some of his bad habits are rearing their ugly head again and trouble is brewing in Gotham. And it all boils down to contracts. Haun and Leonardo are pending UFAs next season, and I fully expect both to get handsomely paid as they rightfully should. I know Dr. K will take care of that so great, you locked down the frontcourt. But this backcourt is an absolute mess now. You have $25M in dead money from the Stack/Terner cuts, Halford and Raya's rookie options are still on the books (if only there was something that could stop that), Josh Owens has $60M guaranteed and took a nosedive in TC, Colton got overpaid in RFA for a guy who isnt even going to play 20 min, and your new starting PG, Ken Johnston is also hitting UFA this offseason and will surely get overpaid by someone. If I had one piece of advice for the New York Knicks, tally up your points from the last few seasons and package some of these terrible contracts and trade them to Atlanta (he REALLY needs the points). You should not be in luxury tax this season but if you keep these bad contracts around and then max out your actual star players then you wont be able to show everyone up again for another 20+ seasons. Sim league is better when the Knicks are better. Please dont make last season an aberration.

From a gameplan side, the Toronto Raptors. Everyone is going gaga for Detroit and for obvious reasons, but I really like Toronto's prospect class plus the next great big, Evan Mobley. Keep this core together because there is a sleeping giant North of the Border. And I for one am looking forward to seeing them make a run in a few seasons.

What were your best offseason moves, or your favorite? Trading back to #12 for 3-point threat Mathurin? Bringing Delmar and Cassius to Philly? Why?
Somehow I manage.

Best move was probably getting Aaron Nesmith and Joe Pabon on vet min deals. I just copied garbageman and false9 because they grabbed them on vet mins last season. I figure both guys will garner some interest from contenders so if they dont cheap out during trade talks maybe someone will get to acquire them.

Getting Delmar and Winston was cool too. Shame I'm wasting the twilight of their careers but their contracts are ridiculous so nobody is going to trade for them. Hope they enjoy the extra playing time at least.

You got Mamadi Diakite from me and then traded him that same season for prime De'Aaron Fox. Unforgivable.

P.S.
