Sham Smith, Bulls.com: Obviously, being in tax debt, your main goal is to get out of tax debt. So if you could play armchair GM to any team, who would it be, and what would you do?
good question. I'm going to cheat and give you two teams but for different reasons.
From the purely business side, the New York Knicks. You did a good (dare I say award-winning) job explaining how the Knicks rose from almost two decades of mediocrity to a 55+ win team last season. Dr. K deserves a lot of credit for turning that franchise around so I'd hate for all the good he has done to go to waste because I think some of his bad habits are rearing their ugly head again and trouble is brewing in Gotham. And it all boils down to contracts. Haun and Leonardo are pending UFAs next season, and I fully expect both to get handsomely paid as they rightfully should. I know Dr. K will take care of that so great, you locked down the frontcourt. But this backcourt is an absolute mess now. You have $25M in dead money from the Stack/Terner cuts, Halford and Raya's rookie options are still on the books (if only there was something that could stop that), Josh Owens has $60M guaranteed and took a nosedive in TC, Colton got overpaid in RFA for a guy who isnt even going to play 20 min, and your new starting PG, Ken Johnston is also hitting UFA this offseason and will surely get overpaid by someone. If I had one piece of advice for the New York Knicks, tally up your points from the last few seasons and package some of these terrible contracts and trade them to Atlanta (he REALLY needs the points). You should not be in luxury tax this season but if you keep these bad contracts around and then max out your actual star players then you wont be able to show everyone up again for another 20+ seasons. Sim league is better when the Knicks are better. Please dont make last season an aberration.
From a gameplan side, the Toronto Raptors. Everyone is going gaga for Detroit and for obvious reasons, but I really like Toronto's prospect class plus the next great big, Evan Mobley. Keep this core together because there is a sleeping giant North of the Border. And I for one am looking forward to seeing them make a run in a few seasons.
